Fiber isn't a nutrient. Granted its helpful but it's not essential. Where did Inuits get their fiber from considering they only had access to plants and sea vegetables for the shortest window during the year. The Inuits are not the only race that consume very little fiber. There are dozens of Nomadic peoples around the world that live even to this day on an almost exclusive animal based diet.. That said I consume more than adequate fiber so I'm not a fiber knocker. And there is a recommended daily intake for beans??? Really???
@rudjan10 жыл бұрын
Elizar Fiber is the indigestible component of plants - It is "helpful" but it is not essential. Caloric nutrients, minerals/trace elements, and some vitamins are essential. Anything else not... Our digestive system does not have the capacity, nor did it ever have the capacity to break down cellulose matter(fiber). This is the sole preserve of ruminants such as cows, sheep antelope & so on - and then there is the "HIND-GUT" creatures -the Elephant & even Ape is a hind-gut creature. The difference between a ruminant and a hind-gut creature is that cellulose matter in ruminants is fermented & broken down in the rumen while in hind-gut creatures food is fermented and absorbed via the large intestine. Hind-gut creatures are not as efficient in breaking down cellulose matter as ruminants but due to the difference in their digestive systems they can source nutrients from less palatable food sources such as bark and even twigs... Hind-gut creatures are extremely inefficient in breaking down food and for that they spend a lot of time eating. These animals can digest cellulose matter or fiber - We cannot... I hope that this makes sense...
@rudjan10 жыл бұрын
What doesn't make sense? I have at no point said that fiber is a bad thing. As a matter of fact I have only said that it is helpful and that I consume more than the recommended amount. Where I took issue with this video is the negative light that the video sheds on protein which is an "essential" nutrient while sprucing fiber. Fiber or roughage only helps people feel fuller quicker without passing on any nutritive effect and that is ONLY if they have a varied diet" & yes like you said it helps you shit "easily" There are plenty of video's on youtube "what I eat on a raw food diet". These raw food proponents promote a diet of abundance where they can easily consume two dozen bananas for breakfast, a tray of mangos for lunch and a dinner salad that would fit into a kitchen sink. In these cases fiber does not promote "fullness" - as a matter of fact it does the opposite as too much fiber promotes too quick a passage of food through the digestive system leaving the body craving for almost stupid volumes of food or better said the nutrients that they miss out on... The reason this happens is because EXCESSIVE fiber intake no longer aids the body but works against it as an "anti-nutrient". As for my earlier explanation on creatures that can indeed metabolise fibre I did this as most people don't know this, and don't know that a humans digestive tract is actually quite short and food must be absorbed rather quickly if we are to get the most out of it. There is no confusion involved... Fibers unique contribution to our diets should not be underrated but "excessive" consumption of fiber should not be promoted either.

It’s actually a non-sequitur, red herring, and tu quoque. When someone asks, “how do you get sufficient protein in your diet”, it’s not relevant or good logic to say, “most people don’t get enough fiber”. It’s possible for someone to eat meat and also get sufficient fiber from plants. So the question still stands: how do you get enough protein in your diet without meat? -especially since 42 g of protein is the *average* for all sizes and ages and activity levels, including small children.
@SnakeBabe8 жыл бұрын
Great information.
@santosjuan182 Жыл бұрын
I differ. 42gr of protein consumption for everybody is too vague. It is recommended 0.8 gr/kg of bodyweight per day as a general value . Also, it depends on your objectives, if you want to build muscle, there are several studies that recommend 1.2-1.6 gr/kg of bodyweight per day. So, it could be saild that for average weight of 70 kg, considering 0.8gr/kg of bodywight, 56gr of protein would be ideal and in the graph it can be seen that vegetarians are below of that protein intake, meaning there is also lack of protein for vegetarians, specially those that are trying to build muscle. Though, it is important for everyone to consume more fiber.

0:40 I seriously doubt that "everyone else" gets the same amount of protein as non-vegetarians as that graph shows. Meat has a much higher protein concentration on a per-calorie basis than plant-based foods, over twice as much. If the non-vegetarian and vegetarian consume the same calories on a given day, it is extremely unlikely that the vegetarian could even get close to the same amount of protein as the non-vegetarian. The numbers shown in this video are extremely sketchy.

A study done in the early 2000s showed that the majority of people did not consume enough protein (12-15% of daily calorie intake). The Acceptable Macronutrient Daily Requirement for Protein is 10-35% but this is for the general population to just survive, not tailored to athletes or people looking to grow or maintain muscle due to activity. 40g of protein per day equates to a 457-1600 calorie intake per day which is nowhere near enough for even the average person. The DRI (Dietary Reference Intake) is 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight, or 0.36 grams per pound. This amounts to: 56 grams per day for the average 70kg sedentary man. 40g of protein would be suitable for a 50kg person according to these guidelines mentioned. No wonder people get so confused with their dietary advice with so much conflicting information. I also wonder what the difference would be in those people on omnivorous diets who had sufficient fibre in their diet too? Would those also show that veganism is a lot healthier, considering it's the fibre that's the issue, maybe it's not the consumption of meat?
@yimengma4446 жыл бұрын
Dom Browne has to look a bit deeper in to it . For muscle Growth ,it seems like only BCAA and leucine are the ones that play role.does it mean we need to eat all amino acids for maintaining muscle .. not sure ... weight is surely not a accurate marker to evaluate how much protein we need .. I think body composition , muscle mass, absorption issue , disease conditions are ...Vegan I feel might possible not getting enough protein but the benefit of other nutrients in plants is way much more valuable in terms of maintaining health ..because inadequate protein intake is only one factor that contribute to muscle loss and dysfunction ..there are tons of other factors out there too and directly linked with not eating enough antioxidants fiber etc ..such as inflammation metabolic dysfunction , hormone issues

The problem is: most people believe when the bodybuilding magazines tells them to consume 4g of protein per Kg of body mass. That's just insance! Remember that they're trying to sell protein powders!! I'm a very visual guy, so I really liked this table that shows how much protein you need according to your size and level of activities: www.veganproteinguide.com/how-much-protein-do-i-need/ I'm currently 64kg (140lbs) and I exercise frequently, so my recommended daily intake of protein is around 90g. Sounds reasonable - and it's something I can achieve with my vegan diet. Obviously there is no scientific consensus around that, so I guess the best way to figure out what works for you is actually experimenting and observing the results in your body and health. Right now I'm feeling great and looking good too, so that's enough evidence for me :)

Fiber is important and all, but I wish you'd had staid on topic in this video and given protein a little more attention. There is a widespread debate over just how much protein we need, especially as we age and/or for athletes or those trying to build muscle. The typical recommendation is 2-3x RDI for building muscle and for maintaining it over 60. Simply stating that 97% of Americans get "enough" protein based solely on RDI doesn't really answer the question that I think most people have, which is "is RDI really sufficient for aging and active individuals?" Would be great to a see a video that goes a little more in depth on this. Cheers.

When I first started the McDougall program I religiously entered all the food I ate into the Cron-o-meter. What I discovered was that it wasn't very hard to get the total protein correct at 60 grams based on .8 per kilogram of body weight. But in order to get the minimum required of lysine I had to up my total protein to 77.1 grams of total protein. Well, then I discovered that the .8 gram per kilogram of ideal body weight government requirement number was based on protein with a PER value of one and most plant food was sitting around .79 which would mean I had to up my total plant protein to 94 gram per day in order to get my minimum amount of lysine for the day. That made the McDougall recommendation of eating a maximum of one cup of beans a day impossible. Either I was going to up the bean amount per day by a considerable amount or I'd be missing my lysine requirement.

40g of protein is what you set as par? 0.5-1g of protein per target weight means that you're Par is a 40 to 80lb person.... Couldn't even finish the video. Information seems based on very old health standards.

Do some research? I work for the Rush fitness complex. I've been a competitive fighter since I was 8. And I have trained 2 national champions in USA boxing. Im not claiming to be an expert in nutrition, but what youre claiming is the baseline for protein intake seems to be for someone very young and small, old and decrepit, or totally inactive with no fitness goals.
