Wolverine and their retailers have some awesome sales. I have two pairs of 1,000 miles, one from a local outdoors store and one from the website. Never paid much more then $300. Also got a pair of the BLVD series cap toe boots for $100 during a similar sale. They're the only heritage boots that I own, so I don't know what I'm missing from Nick's/White's/etc., but these have held up, are comfortable, and are still in good shape after 6 years of regular wear.

I love these thousand mile boots, if you go with the leather sole it really changes the feel of the boot for the better. They'll definitely wear out faster especially on concrete but man are they comfortable. Shoe trees are an absolute must with this super soft leather. I wonder if the switch to a fiberboard insole is a new thing, I've never had an issue with mine. Mine have been resoled 2 times now. Over three pairs I've never had the sockliner move or become unbonded. I think I paid around 280 for the newest pair in 2017. I'm not sure if that $400 is a new price or just MSRP.

Great review! This is the only way to truly see how a boot is constructed. I sent my brand new 1000 Mile cap toe boots to a cobbler. He installed a new split welt, thick leather midsole, heavy duty steel shank, full length Vibram corded outsole, and a leather heel block topped with a Dr. Sole rubber heel. My plan was to purchase a pair of Nicks Americana’s, but the wait time was going to be 6-8 months. This is my first pair of boots, so I definitely compromised and purchased a boot with a good leather upper, and upgraded from the midsole down. I will be purchasing a pair of Nicks next year. Thank you so much for your honest and informative reviews!

Great vid as always. While watching started to think of what 1000 miles really is. For people working on their feet can easily walk 2 -3 miles a day. That is 500-750 miles per year. Can expect these to last several years so easily over 1k. Maybe obvious to most but thought was interesting. I have been wearing thorogood 6” max toes for at least 3 years so well over 1k miles for lesser brand.

I walk at least 4 miles a day during the week and I'm a student. So they would last less then 250 college/work days. During the summer I wouldn't wear them, so that would leave me with 3/4 of the year with them. Which equals to 189 days in my country, therefore they would last me 1.32 years at most. I don't think thats much, especially not for the money.

Thanks for featuring the 1000 Mile, and also for this new mid-tier boot series! For mere mortals like myself, with a boot budget, this is right up my alley. And am so glad I have held off on getting a pair of Wolverines. Initially because they didn't have rubber half-soles and I was always told they were sans a shank (perhaps the older styles?), but now the realization that the overall construction may not be all it's cracked up to be is reason enough. No matter. I recently scored a pair of used Oakstreet Bootmaker boots, so my beloved Beckmans have some great company to hang with. Great video, sir. Mahalos! 🤙🥾

They were one of my first GYW boot purchases but bought them lightly used for like 130 bucks. Definitely worth that price but I can only wear them in warmer weather (I have the leather sole version) because they make my feet cold probably due to how little material is between my foot and the ground. Even the leather outsole itself is on the thin side. I will probably upgrade them to JR soles when it's time and throw a leather midsole in there.

Panama soled Altama/McRae desert boots are the only boot I have experience with that will make it past 1000 miles with zero maintenance. They issued those to us in basic training. Hated them so much that I replaced them as soon as I could. Tore my feet up, very hard under foot, not enough ankle support for airborne operations or long ruck marches. But, if you're not doing any of those things and you're in a warm climate, at least they breathe. You do you boo. (Only Combat Boot I ever trusted was the Rockies SV2. It would be really interesting to list the costs of the materials you’d like to change. How much extra would a full leather heel cost? How much extra for a full sock liner? For $400 there has to be a little extra margin in there somewhere. Also, I wonder if these comparisons are off a bit. Wolverine is selling boots that presumably will end up in a retail store. They’re pricing their boots with the normal retail markups. Whereas other brands are basically selling direct. They’re not building boots with a wholesale and retail margin. So, maybe if Wolverine was selling direct without a retail markup, these boots would be selling for $200-$250.

@@kb9oak749 I get that. But unfortunately that’s how brands die. I want American companies to succeed, but constantly cutting costs is not a recipe for success. I really like my 1000 mile boots, but do not pay retail for them! You can frequently get them 25% off, or check out the STP. I got my pair for $80 from STP and at that price I think its a no brainer. When the fiberboard insole wears out I will just have a new leather insole put in. I will say that compared to something like the Redwing Beckmans, the redwing does use higher quality materials. Wolverine used a few different leathers in their 1k boots too. The pair I have is an olive tanned leather (Actual olive oil/leaves used in the tanning process) that is really nice.

Back then, the boots took 3 months of everyday wear to break in and they've held up beautifully whether in the snow/ice or in the desert. 2 years ago I dyed them black using black shoe dye and now every time I scuff them the original ruby color shines through, which I'm stoked about.

I ran 1000 miles in 2 pairs of cheap running shoes. And I discarded both not because they were damaged or worn but because the foam lost its properties. I think you can use well made shoes for way, way longer than 1000 miles. It will largely depend on how well you treat them (ie conditions in which you use them, do you let them to dry up between uses, etc.), how good you are at cleaning and conditioning and how long you are willing to keep restoring them.

Exactly! My brother is a use, abuse, throw boots in the garbage guy. He has seen my 3 or 4 resoled boots and is in awe. I use RW 8" moc toe boots. My arches are fallen and the wedge soles are all I can tolerate. Also, lace up boots keep my ankles from spraining. I have a pair of Iron Rangers I got many years ago and they are for casual wear, non-work times. Still on the original sole! Still look great. I do clean and condition my leather footwear often. Habits I picked up from my Dad as a kid. Reference running shoes, spot on. Get two good pairs. Same for work boots. Swap pairs each day and let them dry out inside. I have no more arches due to 28yrs of Army service and a LOT of running, often in piss poor boots we had to wear. These days, I mountain bike and walk for cardio.

There's one more thing I think you missed in these review videos, is the last (or the form) of the boots. This thing, I think is pretty important. Agreed that Redwings, White's, Nicks are way better made and superior materials, but they're workwear tier, I mean they're well made but not so well to dress up. For the style of Wolverine boots, you can do light work and dress up as well. I've had a few pairs of 1000 mile boots - quality control isn't the best - sloppy stitching in the uppers is pretty common. However, gotta agree with you, it's a classic boot and they always get compliments. Also a fantastic last for my foot shape, and good arch support. I agree they're overpriced, but if this is what you want, get some!

Hey Weston, just wanted to say thanks for pointing out the pigskin lining in these boots, as it helps those of us who are Muslims/Jews from accidentally buying them. I actually wanted the Wolverine 1000 mile, and I was also looking into Lucchese before you made the video a few weeks back, so you helped me avoid spending a lot of money on boots I wouldn't be able to wear (I usually give them away to my best friend otherwise). It really means a lot to viewers like me!

You might also want to be careful with any reconstituted leather too? As there is ambiguity to what leather shreds they throw into the mix.

Would love a video on some Indonesian boot makers such as Sagara, Txture, and Junkard just to name a few. Typically around this price range if you go for local leathers and are a handwelted construction. Urban Shepherd, Taft, and Parkhurst would also be cool to see.

I love your channel. I got into the heritage Red Wing Moc toes because of it. Thank you for that. I’m in the process of breaking in a pair of Red Wing 10877. They’re the regular work boot version of the heritage 877. They also make a 6 inch version but I prefer 8 inch boots. It’d be interesting to see a comparison between the 10875 and the 875. There are some subtle differences in construction but they both have the leather insole. Might be good for Moctober. The 10877 were around $350 out the door from the red wing store in Huber Heights, Ohio. So far the 10877 feel better than the heritage style and I love my pair of heritage in prairie black.

Let's gooo! The UBS, US Boot Series! Can't wait to see what you'll show this time. That being said, have you ever considered doing another heritage boot series about shoes from other regions of the world ? Being from Europe, I would be especially curious to learn about local heritage brands or small shoes manufacturers. There might be differences in silhouettes or construction choices. Are there be differences between Western and Eastern Europe? Probably not...but probably a difference in terms of bang for your buck. Finally, has the old continent forgotten its old ways and no longer offer long lasting boots?

Appreciate the timing of this upload. I own 2 pairs of wolverine 1k's(one is color 8 and the other is black courtland) and I've found that my courtland one had the insole scrunch up after about a month's use(with 4 other boots in rotation). Really disappointing to experience. Got so pissed that I ripped both insoles out even though only one of them was scrunched up. Been procrastinating the last week with tossin them to the cobbler, because I'm unsure if just to ask for a straight leather insole install. Either way. Appreciate the hard work and answering why the iron ranger feels better. Shame shame.

I bought a pair of 1000 mile wedge sole boots, and the boot were literally two different colors. I wanted to send them back, but I got lazy. There really is a huge variation in leather colors. I would have thought Wolverine would have made some effort to sell boots that were close to the same color.

I feel like a good name for the series could be "Boot-busting" or "Bootbusters" as kind of a play off Mythbusters. I love the series BTW! I'd love to see some breakdowns of Wolverine carbonmax and durashock work boots maybe do something from their I-90 series. I've been looking for good work boots but I have partially fallen arches and it's difficult to find something with moderate arch support and good cushioning.

People can wear their boots from one to three miles every day. 365 days a year. 1,000 miles can happen in 1 to 3 years. Nobody will buy a boot if you tell them that it will last at least a year. For a lot of us, that is why we get new boots every year.
