1. Covering their "aurat) (eg wearing hijab) is compulsory in Islam but it is generally not enforced (with some exceptions in some areas of Malaysia). It is still their own choice. 2. Some women don't wear hijab in their younger years but wear them when they are more settled (30s, 40s) as a sign of maturity (like men stopping wearing torn jeans when they are more mature). 3. What happened if they don't wear hijab although it is compulsory? That is between oneself and her God. As analogy, it is compulsory not to tell a lie, but people still do tell lies. (Same goes with gluttony, excessiveness, wastage, acting indecently etc - no difference). Brave topic. Congrats.

We all dressed a certain way when we go outside. Some dressed for themselves, some for other people and some dressed for God. Islam isn't just a religion, it's a way of life, you have guidelines from the way you dress to what you eat to how you interact with other people, to how you sleep. I honestly don't understand the fixation of other people on the hijab, we all wear clothes, what's weird about a head covering? Its just a little bit extra on top of regular clothing. Nuns wear them, nobody questioned them. Sikh men and women wear head covering, nobody implying they're "pressured" to do so.

Actually, you have to ask, how did a country where almost 90% of muslims did not wear hijab became 90% wearing the hijab in the space of only 20 years? This could not have happened without peer pressure, societal pressure. So it is a big topic, for me especially because the Malay culture has been eroded by the muslim (arab) culture. You mentioned nuns - ok, if let's say 90% of the women in Italy start to dress like nuns over the next 20 years - would that not be a big topic?

Hurm, just because you see them wearing hijab that doesnt mean they are pressured by society. Southern Thailand women are muslims and Malay by race. Malay identify themself living the way as muslims. In Southern Thai Muslims case, their islamic identity is stronger after seeing what happened when too much freedom or lack of modesty happened to non muslims women of Thais.Hijab supposely a way to guard your modesty and chastity but there are some who treat this as fashion or just a piece of clothing.

I started wearing hijab in my mid 20s without any pressure from my family and my husband. Putting religious views aside, wearing a hijab is a form of women’s empowerment. Why be the same with the rest of the world when we can stand out and excel with our hijabs on. There are many successful hijabis out there. Hijab is not stopping our achievement and passion in life. If you are looking for a more detailed answer from Islamic point of view on hijab or any other topics, i suggest you to check out Sabeel Ahmad’s videos. I still recall that, despite Islam having taught women to wear the hijab for thousands of years ago, the majority of Muslim women in Malaysia did not wear it prior to the 1980s. The hijab is now worn by Muslim women in Malaysia not just as a sign of respect for Islamic teachings but also as an element of their personal style. Hijab should be worn voluntarily, not because it is required-much less required by the government. Nonetheless, many women also opt to forgo the hijab since, in Malaysia's humid environment, doing so is more comfortable. God himself offers heaven and hell for us to choose from, so it's up to each of us to make the right decision. After all, there is still no assurance that wearing a hijab will ensure your entrance into heaven, as only God has the power to assign someone to His heaven or hell.

Though initially created for Malays, the sarong kebaya is a stunning national dress that flatters Malaysian ladies of all ethnic backgrounds. The question of whether the stewardess uniform should change was recently surveyed by MAS. They should conduct a survey on how to enhance their services rather than altering the uniform because their services keep becoming worse every day and they frequently receive a lot of complaints from customers that have nothing to do with their uniform.

As long as the uniform is acceptable enough and reflects national identity, especially for a national carrier, uniforms essentially entail wearing the same clothes and cannot be distinguished by religion. Hi Chai! I thoroughly understand what the ladies say but myb some are unable to express clearly. U know Chai, I don't think our Muslim parents push their daughters to wear hijab but probably they want their daughter to start learning young and get comfortable to wearing one. When a Muslim male or female reaches puberty, they hv a responsibility as a believing Muslim to understand the Islamic teachings and adhere to it. Hijab encourages modesty, both physically and spiritually. When a woman covers her head as per Allah's command, it is her way of showing her belief in Allah and accepting all his commands. It makes the connection between the Almighty and that woman stronger.

Like one of the conversation said, it really depends on the society. If you're visiting the east coast in terengganu or kelantan, you will probably feel pressured. But if you're from sarawak or sabah, then you won't be pressured as im also from sarawak. I think because sarawak is such a multi religion state, we really like to keep religion to our personal self and that's why parents think that their children should also have a degree of personal relationship with god. But its just a general idea, of course there are some parents who wants their child to wear hijab but its probably just gonna be a stern advice, nothing physical.

They have a religion and believe in God, of course the "pressure" comes from following what God commanded. But the best word to use is - faithful instead of pressure. When you use the world pressure, you totally take out God from your view point and act as if Islam is a godless religion, which is a contradiction.

Muslim women in Malaysia can easily be identified as it sounds more feminine 😄 And yes I'm his Malaysian Muslim woman subscriber since his first video of Malaysia. I wear hijab late in my 30s as the "societal pressure" for me is actually not to wear hijab in Kuala Lumpur, very hard to get a job to be honest, as wearing hijab is seen as being conservative so the women who wear it are seen as not suitable for business relations etc. It's a total discrimination if you ask me. I don't even wear high heels or make up. I never learn how to, but I have to wear them to work. It took a while for the business society in general not to discriminate against the women who wear hijab, and after they proved themselves to be equally as competitive as those who didn't wear hijab like me. Nowadays Muslim women in Malaysia can finally wear hijab with freedom at work without being told to remove them if they want the job, there's more understanding from the other races in Malaysia that our cloth didn't do the work, it's ourselves who is doing the work. In fact it's more empowering for the women in general as we are no longer judged by our looks, hair, makeups and body in our working society, but rather by our own intellect and capabilities. Hope this explaination helps ☺️

Muslim ladies are mandatory to wear hijab after puberty. They are allowed to show their hair to fellow ladies, family members and husbands only. Some chose not to wear it, and its between God and her. The society shouldn't be forcing her to wear. But an islamic society should encourage and give a good environment for her to wear it because we are following God's order. The reason why hijab is required for ladies is to protect our modesty and chastity, hijab doesnt just mean the headscarf, it means covering the aurah, which is part of the body which is prohibited for the other gender to see. Generally ladies have to cover their whole body except the face, and palm of hands. For male (and ladies among family members and fellow muslim ladies) its covering from navel to knee.

By analogy, just like the traffic rule when you must fasten your seatbelt for your own safety. But if you choose not to fasten, it is between u and the police. In islam, scarf is part of the covering where woman need to cover all parts of the body from the eye of men (except father, husband, siblings, some relatives) except face and hand. In islam, this is part of woman empowerment where the typical streotype and prejudice against women on how they look as a symbol of sex can be avoided. On the same page, men is also instructed by god to lower their gaze, which some/most of men disobey this rule and put tht blame on women for their dress.

Later on as teenager when I fully understand what the real meaning to be muslim it become naturally for me to wear hijab without anyone need to remind me. It just like how we usually force our children to eat vegetables because it good for them. They will rebel but as time progress naturally if their know it's benefit they will drawn to it without anyone force them too. Its not mandatory to wear them in malaysia since enforcing one to wear them would be very contradictory with Islam. although sadly it does happens with social pressure. In school dressing code girls do need to wear them along with a uniform. I came from a malay muslim background. My mom and my family never push on wearing the hijab or even praying, we rarely pray and personally i only pray when i feel like its necessary and it still doesnt make me less of a muslim, many people in my family dont wear the hijab except only do so during recitation and praying time, although they happened to be more religious than i am, some chose to wear them because they like the fashion and hijabista trends. My mom started to practically wear the hijab and dressed up modestly after my late dads passing and even actively recite Al Quran and praying more recently, becoming more religious, yet she never push them on us still. There are types of muslims you can find still, muslims that can be conservatives, muslims can be liberal in practices and dressing and muslims that will just keep it to themselves as a personal choice, because in the ends its just between you and Allah SWT relationship, not the people.

Well done Chai on tackling a potentially controversial subject with very good tact. Until the 1990s, very few muslim women in Malaysia wore the hijab. What changed? For me it is clear - societal pressure. With the establishment of all-muslim boarding schools in malaysia in the 1980s and 1990s, every year less and less students would stay hijab free as all of them feel the peer pressure to wear it. If you don't wear it, you're a bad girl, the religious teacher will punish you and god will be angry, etc. There is pressure even though they don't want to admit it. Even the interviewee who said that it is her choice admitted that her husband wants her to wear the hijab. There are many things which are haram in Islam that muslims still do, so why is this hijab thing so important? Only reason is control - men want to control women, parents want to protect their kids. What kind of parents think that 10 year olds are not dressed decently simply by not covering their hair? Paedophiles? And to be muslim is to dress decently, so what kind of warped hypocrisy is it to cover the hair yet still wear tight body hugging clothes? I really want to see a malaysia where my daughter is not judged by what she wears, but by her conduct. And I am sure that is how God the almighty judges her. Wear the hijab if it is important to you, but it is more important to be a good person.

Well said. A superficial form is viewed critically than the substance itself. The real teaching of being a good person has been mis-prioritized so much by the religious teachers.
@The-axman

@@Wendy-dm5ox Yes superficial. Best example is fasting during ramadhan. Look at the huge buka puasa buffets, party , raya open houses, all that excessive and then wastage of food, then you have to wonder if anyone understands the real purpose of fasting anymore.

@@The-axman Lately dress code issues have stirred up where women in normal office attire at knee length or a long blouse with a bit thin fabric texture were denied entry to government office. This has gone excessively overboard claiming SOP for a Islamic country and principle of Rukun Negara Kesopanan dan Kesusilaan. I wonder if the rule of Kesopanan dan Kesusilaan is observed when the official refuses to deliver service to those who had come all the way from home or office. Pathetic....

Simple Chai, if u believe in Islam u follow Allah's oder to be a good servant & hope to enter heaven with Allah's blesing. Just like students in certain school that need to obey the rules. Some really obey the rules some dont really obey. If u r a good muslim u will obey not because someone ask u to wear but do it for Allah. Parents job is to guide the child in undersanding the religion. But yes dont go judging others.

Hi Chai, I would like to enlightened you about how Islam has spread and embrace by Malay people in Islam specifically. Before Malay embracing Islam, they were practicing Buddhism, Hinduism and animism. Then when Arab Muslim Marchants and indian muslim Marchants do a trade with those Malay Kingdoms along spice sea routes which is from Indian ocean, strait of Malacca, Champa sea . So, Islam on that time is very new to them, of course enthusiasm of malays could lead them to ask more about Islam from those Muslim Marchants. Islam is propagated without bloodshed my friend. It's about mutual relationship between local authorities and Muslim Marchants. Until now, Malay Kings are still taking advice from prominent Muslim scholar and appointed him to be his counsel. So, hijab or scarf is not a symbol of oppression, it's a symbol of an individual obligation to God.

Muslim women wear hijab because of GOD, not because of men or anything else... a real practicing Muslim women who understand their religion that is. Just like a Nun wear their coverings because they choose to. Islamic law is straight to the points just like as a Muslim you can't drink but you still see Muslim drink alcohol especially in western countries, the law said they are sinning, same with hijab, you wear it because GOD told you so and if you don't wear it you are sinning. Same with Jewish laws, some jews follow it some don't, its the same with Muslim.
