I just found this meaning of Dawn's name: Dawn suggests the notions of illumination and hope, the beginning of a new day and thus a chance for happiness and improvement. Sunrise is a symbol of birth and rebirth, of awakening. The coming of light, resurrection. So you have a beautiful name too, Dawn.😊

The party pressure is so real. Years ago my family unit switched to birthday experiences instead. We treat it as a mini family vacation that we space out to the kids birthdays. We create memories at semi local locations and celebrate the kids. Local waterfalls, beach house weekend trip, local waterpark. We eat local meals and support the local community and really enjoy our family time together. When I started investing in my family memories instead of keeping up with the elaborate kids parties, life got much sweeter. ❤

There is a beautiful place in the foothills just in the mountain of Garden of the Gods called Glen Eerie, which means Eagles Nest . It was the home of General Palmer , founder of Colorado Springs, and his beloved wife , Queenie. It is a castle that he built for her. If anything,at least check it out. It is a favorite place for retreats.

We do family coordinated pjs in our stockings each year. We open stocking on Christmas Eve and everyone wears their pjs. This way we have everyone looking cute and presentable for photos on Christmas morning. I count these pjs in our planning when shopping in the fall for winter so we don't end up with too many. Its become a fun family tradition and since they aren't necessarily "Christmas" themed we wear them all winter and even pass them down to younger siblings/children.

My kids need pajamas, and I'm thinking of giving them Christmas PJs Thanksgiving evening (not wrapped) so they can wear them throughout advent and Christmas. I generally shop secondhand and pass on anything that's in good shape after my kids outgrow it, so I'm not too worried about wasting them.

Birthdays are so insane! Yes, let me get a present for a kid in your class that I have never been to their house, I have no idea what they like, and even if you look at the invitation gift ideas, how many Lego kit/ dolls/ trucks/ Barbies/ etc. Does one kid need? I went to a party where the birthday child got two of the exact same gift!!!!!!!

You girls both have a lot of wisdom at an early age and I think you’re good 95% of the time. It’s the gift giving and receiving that always rankles me. I grew up with Italian Grandparents and part of the European culture was to receive gifts graciously. After you can do whatever you want with the gift but you never insult the person by giving instructions on gifts and the amount. It’s a very American way of doing things and I much prefer the other way where you take into account the person, other than yourself, in the gift giving process. It is so harder to enjoy grandchildren today because the parents are so stringent about everything. I know many who just walk away or just reduce their time. So many of us are missing out but it’s a different world.

We had a joint party for our 4 and 2 yo recently. We asked for no gifts and got SO many gifts! I ended up stashing 90% of their gifts in the office in a closet. We'll be using them as gifts for others or perhaps to pull out as new exciting toys when the new baby comes in July.

Birthday parties= I agree! They are so out of hand. The parties are like mini-carnavals and the gifts are so ridiculous. Dawn, you said $20, Here in New York, it is normal to give $50 gifts for a birthday party. It is insane. I like the fiver idea but I would be in the minority. No one would want to be the one to start it. My kids had house parties and party games. Now parties are in a "venue"

Love, the fiver idea! We usually write on kids party invitations "no presents, just your presence!" And I will usually explain that my child is just simply excited to spend time with his or her friends and we want to make this party about quality time and not presents. I'm someone who is absolutely a gifts person, just like you, Diana! But I would rather gifts come from close family that make time to see my child for their birthday and give them something they've been desiring or need. Versus school friends who maybe don't know exactly what their interests are, these gifts tend to be stuff that we don't want or need.

We rarely did big birthday parties with our kids growing up. When we did them at the local pizza place, as each child came in, we would have our sons greet the guest and immediately open their gift in front of them. And individually thank them. Then the gift immediately went into a black trash bag.(was ahead on the black trash bag, Dawn 😄) Most kids are not interested in watching another kid open a gift, and they don't get to play with it. The group event was eating pizza and then singing "Happy Birthday" and eating cake.

I don’t like to add to the huge Christmas present pile, so for the children in the family I buy them a Christmas tree ornament and call it their Advent present. I have done it for my grandchildren too. I don’t buy for most adults except for my husband, daughter and son in law. My mum has dementia and is in a home. She has all her needs met and as she no longer knows any of us, personal presents don’t really mean anything to her. Instead we club together and pay for entertainment for the residents at the home. We’ve had singing groups, animal petting zoos and we bought garden ornaments to pretty up the garden for summer. No clutter and everyone gets to enjoy it. 😊

Regarding Christmas pajamas, our family tradition growing up was to get Christmas pajamas on Christmas Eve but as we got older and weren’t growing out of things every year my mom branched out to other sleep items. We got robes one year, slippers, pillows even one time. So we found ways to kept the tradition even when we didn’t need new pajamas. I have given my kids pajamas every year but not usually Christmas themed. So far they’ve always needed a new pair of pajamas for the winter each year so I haven’t had to get creative. This year they’re just getting PJ pants though because they have enough shirts and blow through the knees of their pants so fast that they don’t need a fresh set, just the pants.

While I understand not every text requires an immediate response, I've been recently disappointed that when i responded with the requested information, I didn't ever receive a Thank You response or a Got It response. Seems like this is a situation where an immediate response would be the courteous thing to do.

Every season comes with joy and new challenges! And lots of areas to learn for both parents and kids:) we have 5 kids, our oldest is 18 and youngest 10, and I am 27 weeks pregnant with #6! So we are leaving "that" season and starting all over again. Our older kids are super excited to have a new sibling, and I am so happy this season isnt over for me yet...and hopefully it will be a more layed back experience!

Thank you for what you said about the consequences and showing them that we don’t want to do things but we do it anyway, we struggle so much with our son and eating meals and I love that approach. Let him make this choice and just live with the consequences

I make my rules for most part match my dd and son in law's rules in my home. I won't give them bunch of sugar either. On the stuff, when you need to downsize and have to handle it all- makes you think about what you buy.

So enjoy watching you both. I am waiting on the arrival of our first grandchild who will arrive any day-paused your video, went online and ordered Simply Parenting-thanks for the recommendation : ) As for birthday parties I want to have a relationship with my sister's grandchildren, my great nieces and nephews, but don't want to add to the gift piles. We started 10 years ago doing "birthday dates" one on one with them. They know we will be calling to book a date around their birthday and as they get older they give a lot of forethought as to where they would like to go. They love going out with us and leaving siblings at home and we love the sweet one on one time we get with each of them. It is the gift they look forward to every year.

As far as nostalgia and tech, if it's something to do with a game there are digital pc versions. That's something I've done.

I would love a discman. I ordered cds from different ministries and think that would be a great way to listen to them, instead of only when I get in the car. Which I forget to listen there anyways, haha

If you have nostalgic stuff like the old discman etc find a way to display it! I go to home tours and they display the neatest stuff unfortunately they overdo and it fills every corner. Keep a small amount and display in a cabinet where it can be seen but isn't collecting as much dust as displaying it out or in a corner of your home.
