@@HessianLikeTheFabric The length of the match is irrelevant since a chess match can be won just as quickly as any fight, and while I understand the point about there being a lot more physicality involved in competitive fighting, there is still a lot of mental strategy and thinking involved. Understanding not only how to perform certain techniques but how to create reactions in your opponent is done in both chess and fighting, and that's where people are making the comparisons. Just like chess too, combat practitioners spend years trying to figure things out and come up with new things. Go watch some fight breakdowns.
@kommisar.
@kommisar. 2 жыл бұрын
@@HessianLikeTheFabric I don't care about cheese or any of that stuff. I'm talking purely about tactics, strategy and technique. The same mental mechanics that go into chess apply to fighting. How do you think elite fighters are able to do stuff like kick each other in the head or sink in a choke? It's not all brute athleticism.
@kommisar.
@kommisar. 2 жыл бұрын
@@HessianLikeTheFabric What makes you think the tactical decision making is nowhere near chess? Most fights (and just to be clear, we're talking about the competitive ones at a reasonable level) aren't decided on who is the better athlete. They're decided by who practiced better and made the better decisions. Ben Askren is on the receiving end of the fastest KO in UFC history solely because he decided to duck his head when that flying knee came at him. 9 other times he wouldn't have done that. Also, I didn't say I don't care about cheese because I discount its importance. I said that because I'm not really focusing that much on it when it comes to the speed at which chess matches can be decided. Go re-read the comments.
@kommisar.
@kommisar. 2 жыл бұрын
@@HessianLikeTheFabric You're just arguing your own subjective opinion of how "complicated" you think the two activities are in comparison, which is not that great an argument. I don't really play chess so I'm not going to pretend I know much about it, but, like I said before, from your comments it sounds like you don't know much about fighting either. Both activities require tons of practice and study to become good at, but if you think there aren't tons of things going through fighters' and coaches' minds, you're wrong. Again, just go watch fight breakdown videos. Go watch Joe Rogan's podcast with John Danaher. It's like 15 minutes long where he breaks down a leg lock one of his guys used in a tournament, and that's just ONE move. There ARE tons of options when it comes to fighting, and it evolves over time. You may think that fighter only did one or two things to KO that opponent, but really he did a lot more than that. Speaking of your opinion on complicated, one thing that's different with fighting than it is with chess is that while moves may seem simple, basic or straightforward, there are actually levels of knowledge to them that a practitioner or student has to learn over time. Let me give you an example. In wrestling the double leg is pretty simple when you look at it, and there are only a handful of ways to finish it. Guys are shown it on their first day. However, there a TON of little details wrestlers learn or figure out about it over time that differentiates a novice wrestler and a world-class one. Often with these basic moves you learn them early on and then spend the rest of your career mastering them, and even then there are still vast skill differences. You can't tell me it's the same with chess.

Plus striking sparring you have to be way more careful, just going slightly to hard can easily hurt your opponent and piss them off. Def some good points made and a great explanation. The only thing I would add as a precaution for Jake, and this is more so when you are out in the open. If you are sitting high on their thighs (again when not against a wall), this is considered stacking. Stacking is a great way to apply pressure to pass, HOWEVER it does set up numerous sweep options for the guy on the bottom without them having to move their hips back to make space. Just something to keep in mind. My advice would be to stack and create the pressure and look to pass off that right away. I also sent you a message on Instagram about meeting up for a collab so please let me know if ya saw it. Great video!
@ArmchairViolence
@ArmchairViolence 2 жыл бұрын
When they're stacked onto their shoulders there are a ton of sweep options. But the Throne should have them flat on their back which means they can't back roll. And the weight distribution means it should be hard for them to dummy sweep either. Maybe you can think of some, but I don't see many good sweep options. And I definitely have seen any materialize whenever I see this move used in pro MMA

@@kommisar. No, he's mostly right. BJJ is essential to fighting MMA, but the current meta is such that submission artists don't do nearly as well as they've done in the past. Even world class grapplers like Oliviera and Burns are only succeeding because they now ALSO have world class striking. The average BJJ black belt that has no other experience would struggle to even beat many amateur MMA fighters. 20 years ago, this was not the case. BJJ used to be top-dog. Now, successful application of BJJ is almost the exception instead of the rule.
@kommisar.
@kommisar. 2 жыл бұрын
@@ArmchairViolence No, you're just moving the goal posts. The OP said "modern BJJ performs poorly against well-rounded MMA", then you list two guys with good "modern BJJ" skills who perform well against said "well rounded MMA". There are actually quite a few guys who did very well on the BJJ competitive scene who also did well in MMA. I would say it depends on how an average BJJ belt was trained in determining how well he would do in amateur MMA. It depends on the school he came from. I would say guys with solid traditional, old-school basics would do well. Keep in mind most of the guys in MMA really aren't that good when it comes to BJJ, including some of the top-level guys.
@ArmchairViolence
@ArmchairViolence 2 жыл бұрын
@@kommisar. I don't think I really moved the goal posts. I said that a black belt with only BJJ would get stomped in MMA. Oliveira and Burns do well because they do a ton of things that are NOT BJJ. Most of their cage time is spent wrestling or striking. 20 years ago, you could win MMA fights by doing almost purely BJJ. If Oliveira and Burns purely did BJJ, they wouldn't be in the UFC, much less fighting for titles. It does definitely depend on the way that the BJJ practitioners are trained, but the old-school basics don't do that well either. The MMA metagame has had decades to figure out how to deal with BJJ basics, and they've done a good job. Some of the top guys are bad at BJJ because they don't need to be good at BJJ. They still win fights in MMA because MMA has evolved very far beyond traditional BJJ. It's a different game now. You can adapt a BJJ game to MMA, but trying to use a "normal" BJJ game in MMA means you will probably get stopped pretty fast. If you magically transported a prime Rickson Gracie to the present day (someone with AMAZING BJJ fundamentals), and put him in a high-level promotion, he would get obliterated by literally everyone in his division. And probably a lot of people below his division. Because the grappling metagame has moved way beyond regular BJJ, and his grappling game would no longer translate as well.

🤔 What I learned, similarly to "dick to dick" clinch defense in muay thai. In MMA, the "sack to sack" position is good against juijitsu, as a pro-ground and pound game.

Sure sure, until I "reap the knee" and your whole plan crumbles like a dry old cookie. You know it's a dangerous move when it's outlawed in BJJ.
@hard2hurt
@hard2hurt 2 жыл бұрын
Umm... lol. The reaping motion banned in some BJJ rulesets can't be done from this position. If you don't know much about BJJ but just don't like it... you could just say that. Like if your plan to defeat bjj is to just "reap the knee" you should at least start with knowing what that means.

Of course you’ll need to spar to really learn, but in the meantime go to Bazooka Joe Valtelini’s KZbin channel. He’s got an incredible set of videos that start at the basics and then build on the techniques and strategies. Gabriel Varga’s channel is also fantastic for this. Both of these guys were world champions in Kickboxing.

Hitting people in the face until they open up for subs or just straight up unconscious is way more fun than doing sporty BJJ stuffs. Of course you still have to maintain position, not as easy as it sounds; but you don't get to do this in a BJJ gym, and if you even try to practice it, casual people will call you an asshole and stop training with you

Jake does talk about up-kicks! They're a passing opportunity for the top player. I've used this move myself, and the pass is very smooth, near instantaneous. In short, that kicking opportunity is a trap.

Many moons ago thr Marine Corps wanted a more effective hand to hand technique. They had instructors come over from Isreal and gave us instruction in Kav Magrav....I enjoyed learning the techniques. I l liked the principals so much that I kept training in the applications of it. Takwando and Karate ( had instruction in each growing up) were great as a platform, albeit both are highly coreigraphed and deeply rooted in pageantry. Kav was to me more of an attacking art than one rooted in stance and learning techniques. Kav is about ending the fight, nothing more. Ju Jitsu is very similar but it's more ground and pound than Kav. One is a sport technique and the other is interperting many things into a fighting skill set.
