That's the thing about nostalgia. I was fortunate enough to have a pretty great childhood, so I most often look back to it as my idealized time. But then I realize that not everyone had the same experience, and in fact some are happy to break free from their past and never look back. I suppose not having that safe space of the distant past to retreat to could be considered both tragic but yet it could also provide an individual with the perk of moving forward unburdened by the same chains of nostalgia.

I grew up in the 80's & 90's. I really miss hanging with friends playing video games together, biking. sports such as street hockey & ice hockey & video game & movie rental store along with arcades. I know they still have arcades now but there was a whole lot more of them in the 80's & 90's. It's just mostly the socializing I miss. As far as being an adult now in 2024 & onward I love my life a whole lot better than when I was a kid. I love the fact that I can drive an SUV & that it has amazing features like apple car play to basically go anywhere & not be lost. I love the fact now that I am making a lot of money just working a 30 hour a week schedule. I love the fact that I can play any video game I want with Emulators & that I bought a small collection of physical video games. Technology such as my cell & pc. For movies & tv shows I buy blu rays & watch them etc. As a kid school was something I really hated. I was picked on, bullied, sexually & physically abused. Those were more of my high school years more than anything. 5 years as a teenager feels like 20. You talked about homework. Yeah I had that throughout elementary school & high school. Yeah I did have some great experiences in school like my high school friends who some are still my friends till this day but there was also the negative too. School is 30 hours a week & for what? You learn useless things that don't matter in your every day life, homework everyday then you got to pass exams to get a high school diploma. Now I don't worry about those things.

I’ve been thinking about this exact topic a TON lately. In the past two years I went from working then hanging out with my wife and playing video games all day long, then writing for IGN and podcasting about video games to now having a fixer upper house, having our first child, and maybe getting to play for an hour a week. I still consume a ton of video game related content in the background while I’m doing chores, but I’ve had a hard time dealing with the fact that that part of my life is more or less over, or at least over for a good long while if I’m lucky. Don’t get me wrong, being a father is amazing, and just yesterday we started mapping out which chores we’re going to tackle on which days and which things we need to replace sooner rather than later for the house. But finding that balance of being a responsible adult, father, husband, and friend while still enjoying my love of games and making sure I have ‘me time’ has been one of the most challenging things I’ve had to experience in my life (mainly because of the endless nature of it)

Ah yes. Netflix isn't the only streaming service we got tons now. Even if you don't like streaming services you can buy blu rays of movie & tv shows. Also you have to remember cable & VCR's were barely a thing until the 90's. Also t.v watching your shows you may have had a black & white t.v & then a colored t.v... A lot of us didn't have cable so channels would be a snowy receptions. Then no DVR existed so you either had to watch your tv shows live when they aired or tape them on your VCR with those 6-8 hours SLP mode tapes. Now lets say you want to watch Star Trek The Next Generation, on blu ray with clarity & they have a lot more content on them. It's very cheap to buy also.

Now, as a 49 yo, I haven’t had a tv in my house for more than a decade, but I still enjoy some good old handheld gaming on my Nintendo ds, 3ds and Switch. I work as a taxi driver and I often take my Switch with me to kill the time in between rides, so that’s a great having-fun-while-taking-care-of-responsibilities-combo😊

You make some good points for both sides. There were plenty of good things about when I was a kid (this was in the '90s), as well as some bad, but it's not something I think about too much. Ultimately, we're in the time and age that we're in, and we might as well make the best of it from now on: play some games, eat some 'nanners, and be excellent to each other!

Thanks for this, Bird. In the summer as a kid me and my 3 brothers would go to my cousin Cole's house circa 98-00. He had everything. Good gaming PC that ran starcraft and RCT2 like a dream. N64, PS1, SNES of course, dreamcast when it came out. We had a 4 system rotation, and we would rotate on the hour so we each could play what we wanted on each system. This is where I was introduced to such titles as lords of the realm, killer instinct, final fantasy "3" and 7, wild arms, suikoden, pokemon, balders gate 2... so much more. There was also an hour of outside play each day, but man those were the days. I'm grateful that my cousin was the spoiled one and not me. Also grateful that he shared his awesome stuff. Peace be with you.

Im glad that while im an adult I still got some twilight years here where I can still not have *so much* responsibility that I dont have a lot of time to myself. Sure, I dont have *as much* time to myself as before, but I sure have a lot of time to myself. A few chores, a bit of freelance work I do for spending money I do more than anything, and some stuff that isnt paid but I technically get some form of work experience from. In fact the only thing that seems to suck up my time unintentionally is sleep and youtube. As in, I sometimes sleep for 12 hours if im not careful. And that's less time for playing videogames. Point is it is nice to be at an age where I understand videogames on a deeper level, but I still have enough free time to really dig into them.

Fantastic video MR. Bird!👏😂 I can still have nightmares about homework, school projects and tests, so I’m so glad to be rid of those things😅 On the flip side, I do miss hanging with my friends playing Mario Kart on the snes or Gunstar Heroes on the Genesis, and later, the smaller lan parties where we played Diablo 2 and Neverwinter Nights😊

What a great video. I’m almost 40, and going to sit down with my wife and two little kids to watch this together.

I miss being a kid but I use my nostalgic things whether it be games or its music or anything to help me get through the tough times we all are facing right now.

As an avid nerd/game collector, I have so many great memories of discovering new games and systems with my friends. But I also get to re-live that feeling with my 10 year old son, who just loves it when we fire up the old Saturn or SNES and play something he hasn't seen before!

I miss having my mind blown by video games as a kid, but as an adult, I like that I appreciate more kinds of games now. I try my darndest to go in blind with games and minimal outside opinions, and it helps keep that sense of wonder alive. Amazing how many more games you’ll enjoy when you stop letting others condition your expectations.

I rarely got homework. I completed it during class while reaffirming what I read prior to coming into class. I also checked my work if I had time in the class. As a result I had a ton of free time. In my kid years I used gaming as an escape. That is why I enjoy immersive type games. I lost my innocence due to being exposed to trauma at the hands of my first substitute teacher in 1st grade. I therefore was hardened into thinking that if I put in the hard work to be smart if not smarter than my teachers they may become my allies to defend against bullies and other bad people that sought to harm me. It didn’t always happen, but some did help me out since I had a great professional relationship with them. It was the substitutes I generally hated as they were either incompetent or didn’t treat me right as they thought nobody in their class could possibly do enough effort to be on their level. I sure prove them wrong. As I grew my chores become numerous: Trash, Vaccuuming, Making sure my room was clean and not just neat, mowing during the summer and while my cat was still alive I was in charge of at least doing the litter box, but at the most changing the water and occasionally feeding him. When all that was done I wasn’t always able to play video games. My parents were of the opinion that playing outside was preferable and the amount of video games I had was limited due to dad primarily not endorsing my gaming. Mom understood, but took a measured response to it. When I was that age I had a Wii and a Nintendo DS Lite and a DSi XL with a limited games selection. As such I played my games repeatedly and to 100% to get the most out of them. If I ever was punished, my gaming privileges were revoked and the items I was gifted were hidden in a place I didn’t know about. Eventually I got them back, but it was very dull in the meantime. Now that I am an adult I have a mountain of responsibility that I have taken to heart and do well, but when I stress about things as an adult I tend to get paralyzed in terms of if I can justify playing video games or trying new ones. I now have arcade style titles I can play and not feel guilty about because they are short and do not have a story so I won’t feel guilty about spending too much time engrossed in it.

Glad you made this video. Everyone needs their relax time to get away from the day to day.

I kinda miss seeing a game in a magazine and having to wait until a major holiday or birthday to play it. You memorized the walkthrough, imagined beating a boss, and strategized with your friends. Now, you can watched a full play through on twitch a week before the game comes out.

This video spoke to my core. Great video. By the time the kids are put to bed, I'm too tired to play games and just go to sleep. Hopefully over time the kids will get easier, and then there will be more energy for retro-gaming!

The irony about what you said about homework is that when I was a kid I actually didn't have to do homework that often. Even when I was a teenager. I think it was just a schools I was going to that had to do with that. Then in college as an adult I ended up having a bunch of homework.

I definitely still have an issue with finding time to relax, I always have that niggling thought on the back of my mind about things I have to do. I wish I had my childhood sense of time again. There always seemed to be more of it.

Best memories about being a kid? Waffles served up hot and crispy at the bar, followed by a morning at the baseball field, Gatorade to rehydrate, lunch and then an afternoon of nba jam and other video games under the ceiling fan. The best. The things you just can’t recreate as an adult. Love the videos! Relatable for sure.
