I had a smaller table top parts washer from Harbor Freight that I used for 30 years. It was still going strong when I gave it away because I was moving across country and didn't have room for it. I used Super Clean or Purple Power concentrates for degreaser. It's very handy to have around, particularly if you are restoring an old car or bike.

Thanks for showing the cleaning process of the parts washer. I use a plastic tub for washing parts. I have two 5l bottles of diesel, one labelled clean and the other dirty. When finished cleaning something I put the fluid in the ‘dirty’ bottle. After a while, the sediment settles out and I decant it back into the ‘clean(-ish)’ bottle.

Kerosene works well also but then you have a constant fume source because they don't really seal the cleaning agent off from atmosphere unless you want to drain it and clean it every use. If it's in a hot, closed up garage in the summer, and you walk in, it can be strong. Having even a gallon of uncapped petroleum flammables ready for accidental ignition (even if remote) in your shop is just bad JooJoo. In the US I use "Castrol Super Clean" or "Purple Power" concentrates. They work well, are inexpensive, and a lot easier on your skin though nitrile gloves still recommended. I filter with an old sweat sock. It's faster than a paint/coffee filter but still gets the solvent "cleanish" enough for a parts cleaner. LoL

Hi Penny and Del - A great video! I bought a 19L portable parts washer a few years ago when the need became obvious. Mine only works with water-based solvents so it's perhaps less effective but it still does a great job. I really like you idea of a coffee filter when filtering the fluid for reuse. FYI I have a Kettenmax Chain Cleaner that I use kerosene with. It is NOT a closed system so I have to capture the filthy chain cleaner in pans as it drips off the chain... I have filtered it through Blue Shop Towels and to my utter surprise it comes out clean and clear, ready for re-use! Take care, dear friends. Be well, ride safe!

I started out with an oil pan, using gasoline, later realized a bad idea, changed to a degreaser, was not satisfied, changed to solvent, and much better…. Bought a NAPA professional solvent tank, and had it for years with, the same solvent. Still have a 5-gallon new solvent stored away for 15 or so years never opened. Now I'm over due cleaning it. Guess you're hinting me… “ hey, its time!” 😁

Sure thing, it's incredible how people think you have to throw it away, the solvent is practically permanent, mine's still working strong after 5/6yrs, I just clean the grit out of it every now and again!

FWIW I have seen garages which used a stainless steel sink and sat is on top of an old oil barrel. Fill the barrel with 3/4 water and then the rest paraffin and petrol. Drill and hole and put a nozzle on the side and use compressed air to give positive pressure to the wash tube and mesh nozzle, and you get the solvent pushed out and then going into the barrel where the light than water solvents float and the dirt and particulates sinks to the bottom. Seemed to work well enough, but obviously not for everyone. Along with a sand/grit blaster, a parts' washer is an essential tool if you are constantly doing maintenance on engine vehicle parts. I always say I want one when I am active on a project bike. And then in between I think it’s not needed. I use a tub and brushes. But ONE DAY I will get one. Love the outtakes at the end as well!

Alright Del - hope you and Penny are well. A video worth making, mate. I remember your cat litter tray days from back in the prefab on the workbench and still use that idea to this day. Hope to proceed to a cut-down s/s sink one day. Would love a parts washer (and sandblaster booth) but - as you say - footprint and cost. One day.... with a bit more folding.... and a bigger garage. All the VFR's are doing well. France introduced their MOT finally - the Control Technique. 50 euros for basically pre-ride checks. Had to explain to them that I did what they did every month. C'est la vie, as they say... ;o)

Ha ha, makes me chuckle when other contries decide they've come up with a "Great Idea", and we've been doing it since 1960... still no smog test on bikes, but they'll be along shortly along with decibel testing.. ive now decided that hanging on to older bikes is worth doing as they'll be legislated out of existance before long.. I worked at a shop in the early 70's they had taken a 55 gallon barrel and made a washer with a dunking tray an air fitting at the bottom for bubbles . It cleaned very well.

Sounds like a classic piece of old school garage kit, the drums are designed to hold fluid so what better donor could you want! (they make a great BBQ too lol)

I had a parts washer once. Was my pride and joy. Then I got divorced and it had to stay behind. Later I found out the ex had given it away, along with many of my tools to my neighbour, a guy she knew I despised. That still hurts to this day.

Great job recycling the cleaning fluid. You can filter out the solids, but what about the oil and grease. It dissolves in the cleaning fluid and will gradually turn the fluid into something that does not do the job anymore. How is it recovered, or do you just chuck it at that point?

Good wheeze - parts washing is an essential start to any good job, eg. 'Work clean - every time!' Whether you use a stolen plastic bowl*, or a Clairol foot-spa found hidden under granny's stairs (worth a look, they were all the rage - once), keep IT clean too - just one piece of grit under a gasket face, or stuck in a bearing race can cause severe follicle damage upon discovering it's 'effect'. *Forget asking permission, pointless - just fill the NEW ONE (same size & colour) with chocolates, & say things like 'Dinner's nice', the best you can through the frost. (I'm a 'guru', me! : )xx

Hi Rick, I tend to take the same mentality sometimes on how much longer I've got doing this..., perhaps not overall, I'll always work on bikes, but just on the scale of my current shop... two lifts, a lathe, machine press, all of the bigger equipment which I use increasingly less these days... but there's nothing wrong with scaling back, and there are always deserving people you could donate the stuff to when the time comes! I acctualy found that i didnt have use for it, had one but always found my self going back to useing breakcleaner and a rag 99% of the time, wether it was just old habits die hard or my way is actully more effective im not sure but the upside is wait untill they are out of stock on machine mart and you can sell it for as much as you paid for it 😂😂

Not sure exactly what you mean "drain oil while doing it"?.. you would NEVER get blasting grit anywhere near an engine, just a spoonful accidently drifting inside will destroy yer internals... take the engine out of the frame and store it sealed well away from your blasting opperation...

Shot Blast cabinet will come with a gun. You'll need a large storage capacity and high CFM "piston" compressor.

Blast cabinet was separate question engine bit was removing engine from frame complete but as it will be a while before rebuild frame would it be best to drain oil out of engine whilst stored and change oils after on refit or leave in to protect engine will be stored upright hope this clarifies🤪😁

Aha,, phew, made me quake a bit there.. the very thought of blasting near and engine is horrifying..lol...! OK, yeah, leave the old oil in unless it's nasty and filthy (presuming its a Dyna with oil in engine).. draining it has no real belefit.. But here's a thing mate.. i built and finished my Sportster engine FIRST.. ran it like i was all finished and ready to ride.. then pulled it out of the frame, wrapped it in cling film and stored it under sheets.... then.. once i was all finsihed restoring the frame, i eased it over the engine (on its side) and then rebuilt the bike around it, and once finished, i fired up the motor and enjoyed the bike.

All it is 40years old nearly and I’m not a mechanic but can fix things that’s what I know😊 and all with watching your videos over and over again more Harley stuff please
