My Wellue continuous pulse oximeter is what finally convinced my husband's cardiologist to finally order a sleep study for him. The same test his former GP refused to order, I might add. His O2 sat rate was going down to 70 over and over throughout the night. I use the O2 ring on occasion to make sure that my settings on my cpap with oxygen are working. It's peace of mind in our case.

I'm loving that salt and pepper afro, Gramps, and we really appreciate the SleepHQ shout-outs, too. Thank you! I find the ring's movement data beneficial for patients experiencing positional sleep apnea ( 50% of patients ). I personally benefit from the ring's pulse rate alarms due to my 'Holiday Heart Syndrome.' To manage this, I've set a pulse rate vibration alarm for 130 bpm, as my heart rate can spike to over 230 bpm for 20-30 minutes on some nights without it. This gentle vibration effectively wakes me. Moreover, I frequently share my ring, which I affectionately call Roxanne, with others. It serves as an excellent screening tool for sleep apnea (without the hassle of doctor visits, labs etc). Do you need it? Absolutely not, but it has some other useful features besides monitoring SpO2. Cheers
@kappa7
@kappa7 4 ай бұрын
Hi Jason. While I agree that you can see most features from the airflow profile I think there is still value in having SpO2 monitoring. For a start it can show you how much benefit you get from CPAP compared to sleeping without CPAP. CPAP can't tell you anything about your sleep once you've ripped off the mask! It's a level 4 sleep study you can do every night... Also I think there is value in the detailed pulse rate data (every 4s), particularly if you can synchronize the CPAP and SpO2/pulse data graphs to within a couple of seconds (which is admittedly not easy for most). This could help distinguish between spontaneous or LM arousals (pulse increase before breathing event) and breathing related arousals. There's no reasonably cheap EEG for regular consumers so we can't all go down that path...

I used a night of ring-wearing over two sessions to compare my SPO2 over my with-CPAP hours and without-CPAP hours. The "Insight O2" software "Sleep Report" (which Jason has no use for) doesn't provide much, but it does show how much time you spent in various 5%-wide SPO2 intervals. Builds an easy-to-grasp bar graph summary in the morning, or as I have come to call it, "last night's stairs". Probably indeed not worth the ring price for most people, and it does feel as if it will simply just physically fail within a year. YMMV. I note the results in my SleepHQ "journal". Hopefully in the future, I will acquire some astute predictive powers, based solely on CPAP machine data displayed on screen.

@@devnull1313 So that being said when it is all said and done if you need Oxygen you have to have it prescribed by a Doctor. If you are waking up during the night, and you wake up with a headache, short of breath, feeling bad you need to have the doctor look at you anyway. An O2 ring is not going to fix it.

@@cebruthius Not sure of your interpretation here... sounds like a bit of an absolute statement on your part. In the bulk of the analysis of the graphs Jason correctly identified periods of desaturation by looking at the breathing profile. Presumably the reverse is also true... one could identify periods of SDB by looking at the SpO2 graph. There's also a correlation between heart rate spikes and arousals, which is a potentially useful metric to infer sleep quality.

I like the Wellue O2 ring! The heartrate portion tells me incidents of Bradycardia (or tachycardia). The oxygen portion tells me CPAP has made a big difference, and as I've increased the level on the CPAP, the amount of time spent between 100-95% has consistently improved, which makes me feel better. Unfortunately, as you mentioned, my flow rate and arousals still don't look great, so the O2 ring isn't the whole answer, but a data point.
@gregblank247
@gregblank247 4 ай бұрын
Here are 2 ways I find it useful: 1) I lend it to people who suspect they may have apnea... If we see lots of o2 dips that are clinically significant then they can advance forward (with Dr and a study etc). If we don't see significant dips then at least it's not likely medium or severe. Also it can be used to A/B test positional therapy. Then they can try positional therapy and see if they feel better. 2) To A/B test different other therapies... to see if oxygen dips through the night improve. While its not a complete diagnostic by any means... it helps to give indications that can aid direction when marked results change.

The 02 ring has been a great tool for me. My oxygen levels were running average of 88 during the day. Dr. was super concerned, ordered $1000+ in tests that came back clear. I bought the 02 ring and played with my cpap levels and now my levels and sleep are improving. Dr. was extremely happy that I purchased the ring and showed him my data from it. Also something that wasn't touched on, I can download the ring onfo from the night into the app on my phone in 2 seconds and have the info I need to see what kind of night I had. No pulling the card and uploading on a computer etc... which is super annoying and time consuming. Honestly I find the whole sleep HQ and Oscar upload a pain in the arse since I mainly use my phone or my tablet. So ring is a big fat win as far as I'm concerned. Just in case nobody has reminded you lately. I know so many people who have sleep apnea but don’t realize it, or suspect they have sleep apnea but are hesitant to get a study done to confirm it. Loaning these people one of my Wellue O2 rings can make a big difference in their life by convincing them to get diagnosed and treated for sleep apnea. (Note: I recommend ignoring the reported desaturation numbers, especially “drops over 4%”; the people I know who have the worst sleep apnea have “drops over 4%” numbers that are barely above 5, or even below it. Instead, just look at how much the oxygen graph “smears” downward.) On the other hand, I agree that pulse-oximeters are useless for UARS. In fact, you have to be careful on that front because one might be tempted to conclude that nothing is wrong with a person’s sleep breathing when you see that they have virtually no oxygen desaturations. But UARS has nothing to do with oxygen drops, of course; it is invisible with respect to one’s oxygen levels.

Well now, Dad of LeggoMan, I'm gonna have to have my first difference of opnion on this. I have COVID lungs and while CPAP (BiLevel) has helped, I need to record how long my O2 stays in the 70s and 80s. Some nights it is for an hour or two. I need this information to get qualified for adding Oxygen. So, true, once the need is established, I should be okay without monitoring, I would still do so. I even wear a second Wellue O2 ring during the day because my O2 randomly dips into the 70s, at which point I have to deep breathe. But, I am probably an exception. 🙂

I like the forest for the trees analogy. Its not that the data is bad, I have found it very useful for home screening of family and friends, using a good overnight fingertip oximeter. It is handy reinforcement when talking to cpap users about their sleep, picking up odd low O2 levels and most usefully the sleeping heart rate. The elevated spiked heart rate will give away UARS. Young, fit individuals you would never convince to have a sleep study otherwise. Unfortunately, it can be a blinding distraction to many users after starting cpap. It does seem to have a hypnotic effect just like the AHI score.

FYI - I agree with Jason (Johnsoon) -I have COPD, Sleep Apnea, and I have been on Bi PAP and O2 for +6 years. My doctor monitors my sleep quality, as has even sent me home with a O2 sensor to wear all night. I asked him point blank if I have 02 crash at night is that a good idea to sleep without 02? His answer was for one night to study oxygen it is not a problem. If your oxygen falls you will wake up. FYI - they would take me off 02 if they could I am sure, but they do not. I have been monitoring my sleep and with OSCAR, as well as Sleep HQ and I find for me the same observation when my apneas, and hypopneas happen Oxygen saturation drops even a little even using 02 . I do not need to monitor it and if I do not need to I do not see most needed to either.

The rest of my hair is long. 😆I've actually had some challenges with my AHI after surgery. I couldn't use my CPAP for 2 weeks after surgery because of the pressure (this is what my Neurosurgeon told me). But now my AHI's are higher than they used to be before surgery. Is that normal? I have gotten straightforward info from my 02 ring! I was able to demonstrate to my sleep Doc that my CPAP therapy wasn't helping me because the AHI doesn't tell the whole story. As a result of sending her several of my reports from the 02 ring, she ordered a new sleep study! As a result of that study, I am now on considerably higher pressure on BiPAP. I am now seeing much better result and if I had not had the ring, I would have given up on sleep apnea therapy!

I think pulse tracking is useful. How big of a pulse change are we talking here, and how frequently? I expect that there are many possible factors here, many normal, like REM sleep which will tend to have a higher variation in pulse rate. For me things like PLM can cause jumps in pulse rate of 10-15, while with some arrythmias the rate can be jumping all over the place (like from 70-140).

@@scowell Transmissive measurement should be more reliable than the reflective measurement that a watch style wearble is doing, but the O2Ring is relatively heavy and could get confused by movement.
