With so many people interested in tuning over the last 3-4 years, I've seen many high level tuners recoil from being open about sharing knowledge and/or letting outsiders in to observe/learn. I've also seen many mid-tier tuners work passing as acceptable because the industry is flooded with absolutisms and misinformation. The best way to learn tuning is by learning Combustion Dynamics.

The more knowledge someone has, as a rule, the more they will share. It's often only those that don't have a lot of knowledge that hold on and try to protect the little that they do know. There are exceptions from time to time, but I find it holds true more often than not in my life experience - Taz.

Great video Andre. This is exactly what I will be doing. I am going to purchase SCT Advantage since that is what my tuner uses to tune my car with and take over tuning it. I already upgraded the turbo (GTX3071) and looking to find the limits of the stock block at the drag strip. Proof of concept works very well with a business like this.

For me to get confidence with tuning my car i had to do tons of research on tuning then i found HPA best investment i did tuned my first honda b series had fun doing it then jumped on the K series bandwagon quite a challenge since its an advanced engine so road tuning is time consuming but patience is key when tuning an engine you cannot rush through it.

Math, physics and mechanics are great prerequisites to tuning. It is nerve racking to think a motor could fail from over looking parameters while tuning. So long as one understands what their working with and keeps a bushy tail while doing it then there really isn't need to rush results, more the need to mind tolerances of what's involved, is the vehicle up to snuff. This was a very reassuring video :)

Understanding the basics at first is plenty. Most people do not have high HP projects, very mild with very low expectations really. For example I am in the Focus ST community where the vast majority of cars are on the stock flash, a larger minority is tuned while an even smaller minority have upgraded turbos, I count myself as one of those people. I am also apart of a smaller subset that are building towards 500-600 whp. Which many Millennials and Gen Y believe is too much power in a FWD car. While being Gen X I come from an era where running single digits was once thought to be impossible with a 100% race car, let alone a street car. There are street driven FWD cars with just a tire change capable of running single digits now and driven home afterward. My point is, as the power goes up what fuels run, spark plug gaps and heat ranges become important and are easy to learn.

Awsome content as always👍👍 EFI tunners are awsome.

If my car blew up on the dyno I definitely wouldn't blame the tuner I use, I'm pushing it so shit can happen, so many cars have engine problems that are standard and not even thrashed, that's life
@ryanwolfe9116 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't trust a tuner that can't turn a wrench. I know it's not their job, but they should at least have an understanding of how an engine is put together and what they're doing can effect the hard parts. Oh, and more often than not, you end up doing it anyway to make needed changes.

I have a 20v i5 Audi GT I'm considering building/ converting to AWD since it has a closed deck iron block. Either I modify the i5 or give into a 2JZ GTE VVTi. What would you do?
@dj4monie6 жыл бұрын
Something wrong with the 5 cylinder? Plenty of hard core parts available for it. Depending how much power your after 2JZ get really expensive after 500-600 hp.
@gammalight13126 жыл бұрын
@@dj4monie nothings really wrong with it but aftermarket parts are harder to find and normally have to be imported from Germany. It honestly comes down to upgrading camshafts and crankshaft to get past 600hp with the i5. Otherwise a 2JZ just needs a torque plate adapter and has every aftermarket option already available. It's gonna get pretty expensive either way so I'm building it for race only. I'm considering a STi driveline if not Audi.

So, based on what he said you can be competitive and a succsesfull tuner without understanding how things work or knowing what the limits are and by being at the right place at the right time... sheep? I didn't know this video was on: "how to make money tuning"... title said otherwise :) Wonder if that's really the image he wanted to portray. Good on Andre for pointing out that it depends on what you're working on though.
@hpa1016 жыл бұрын
No, it's the opposite and being in the 'right place at the right time' is only part of the battle, you then need to make the most of that if it happens. This knowledge doesn't just drip into your brain without a lot of work... The comment about not blowing up engines underlined the importance of investing time in yourself and your knowledge base, and how if you do take that time to educate yourself it is not something that should ever happen rather than the opposite where you jump into things and then just blame everyone else for your own shortcomings (that's not to say things don't sometimes go wrong). It should be noted that while David here had the skills that were needed to jump into the industry where and when he did, he has also gone on to build his own successful and well-respected company. That doesn't just 'happen' for anyone without making the effort and sacrifices required - Taz.
