Do you need to upgrade a Tamiya Lunchbox?

The best upgrades I've done on my lunchbox are, torque tuned motor, grasshopper 2 front arms, 100mm front oil shocks and 95mm oil shocks for the rear. Has a much better turning circle with the grasshopper 2 front arms. Always a fun car to use. Keep up the good work! Thanks for your videos.

That Grasshopper arm trick is a good shout, I might look at that. The Torque Tuned is the perfect motor for them I find 🤔👍

Well, I couldn't tell you one way or the other if upgrades where needed. I guess it takes all sorts of Lunchies to make the world go round. I can tell you that the first song played at double speed is pretty trippy 😆

The Tamiya Lunchbox..... It is what it is!! Easy to build,relatively tough,cheap to repair,a perfect creative canvas to decorate,and will leave you grinning from ear to ear every single time that you take one out!😊 In my personal opinion,i would say that there are only really three essential upgrades: -Metal body posts -Torque tuned motor -Bearings This set up optimises the full potential of a stock lunchbox. Further upgrades(of a huge and wonderful array) are fun,but do begin to dampen the raw CW01 experience. These things are designed to be ruff,bouncy and clumsy.....which in turn gives them their humurous and fun character!! Great idea for a video guys,i must admit,from a 'viewers' perspective i actually found it hard to spot much difference between the two......although im sure it would be more apparent if i were driving them. A few guys have been talking about whether the hornet evo is the start of Tamiya potentially modernising a few more of their classic vintage range,and the lunchbox has been mentioned. Cant decide in my head whether this is a good or bad thing in all honesty? Lets face it,its been selling strong since 1987......potentially a case of "if it aint broke,then don't try to fix it"?🤔 On a final note, no better vehicle than a lunchbox to gain some entertaining out takes footage!😂 👍 👍

See I knew you were team Torque Tuned, I find it’s far better in a Lunchbox than the Sports Tuned, you need that power at the first trigger pull! It’s a tough one with the subject of bringing the range up to date, from what I see the ego is just a hornet with a couple of upgrades that could be bought separately for less maybe, I feel the evo is like one of those jars of cooking sauce with spices on the lid, just mix it all together 🤷‍♂️🤔😂👍

I like my hornet just how it is,yeah the DT02 gearbox and double wishbone suspension make it drive better,more like a DT02 .....in which case if i want that driving experience then i will just take my DT02 out instead of the hornet!😂 Yeah man,after much testing i have to agree- Torque tuned in the lunchbox all day long! Its that added torque that brings it to life,usable power range as it were. I generally use superstocks in 90% of my runners,but the CW01 platform is one that they really dont perform well in. Dont get me wrong,we've whacked as low as 13turn motors in some of our lunchies.....but theres absolutely no fun in having to keep doing the walk of shame to put it back on its feet after every time that you try and turn!!😂 As you are no doubt fully aware,the lunchbox is one of those vehicles that doesn't have to be fast to be fun. Following on from our chat last week I've had a ridiculous idea in my head to create another custom lunchy..... A 1980s BBC liscence detector van body complete with BBC decals,driven by Jimmy saville and Rolf Harris!!! 😬 I think it would make a cool little project.....not so sure how well it would be perceived by the community though,no one seems to have a sense of humour these days! 🤷‍♂️ 😅 👍 👍

I flipping love that idea, put a little satellite on the roof, even get 1970s/80s BBC stickers of Redbubble for it, if I can help with it I’m 100% down. Wonder if you can get an old Stylophone for it, painting the figures would be a hoot! Could have it doing a an assault course like it’s a knockout as Stuart Hall was part of their gang 🤣😂👍

Bearings and a faster motor is all that is needed to have a lot of fun for a long time with these guys! The purple monsters looked great out there together! That first song gave me horrid flashbacks of my kid learning to play the recorder and it made my eye twitch a little! LOL!!

Yeah a few cheap upgrades do help, but if the budget is tight then it’s still a fun one. Luckily RC So & So Junior doesn’t do the recorder, as it would mean he would have to stop playing bloody Fortnite 🎮🕹️🙉😂👍

I agree on most of your upgrades, with two difference. I always put a Sport Tuned motor into it. Theses aluminium front axles I has, too. One little hit and one was bended. Never again😉. Nice Lunchy dance. You can really see the shock difference between both.

Over the years i often hear this of metal upgrades. Plastic often is (Not on the lunchbox😂) flexible and bent without braking. Aluminium doesn't brake but bents stays this way and maybe to a point where it isn't repairable anymore or after looks like from the junkyard.

Put it this way on my main lunchbox I changed a lot of it to aluminium, and I had to replace the chassis! I think it’s best to think what the cheapest and easiest thing is to change and make that a point of weakness so you don’t have major surgery to do! 👍

@@RCsoandso jeaph, broke my chassis, too. Because of the metal front arms. Had forgotten it, althought I made a video about the replacement. Now the originals're back in. The car wheelies and absorbes the hits better😁

Let's say it's the paranoia of the 80s kids only a car with ball bearings, oil filled shocks, double wishbone suspension and metal parts is a good one and not so sloppy a the kit version😁. These days I know that pladtics much better and cheaper for jumping around, not talikg about the additional weight. I leave the metal parts for those who're familiar with onroad racing and steer their cars very precise. Or on my crawlers😉. Habe Dich mal abonniert

Only 4 are needed in my opinion...bearings, metal body mounts, torque tuned motor, and the transmission brace. But of course they are fun right out of the box...the Tamiya formula is...Flawed kit + Good electronics + hobbyist = a lot of fun.

My midnight pumpkin has bearings and a sport tuned, my lunchie has bushings and a silver can. It’s only slightly slower than the pumpkin and just as much fun

My beat up lunchbox has bearings, metal mount, CVA oil shocks, 5th shock, centred servo mod and it runs so well! I had double wish bone mod before but they broke on 1st hit (cost me 80 AUD to ship from UK to AUZ…..) back to stock A arm and the softer plastic took hell of a beating. She has written off 2 sport tuned motor running on the beach over the course of 2 years. Now it has a silver can, will see how long this one lasts😂

Yes but I bet it is ready for more, seriously consider a Torque Tuned motor as they really go well in a Lunchbox, they are Hardcore machines!

A lunchbox is a lunchbox! Hop ups are a quest for tinkering rather than any massive upgrade. There is a UK based company that does some great upgrades to the front arms but you probably wont have any less fun 🙌🏻

I think whatever your budget you can have fun with the Tamiya Lunchbox, it’s great for the occasional user and the hardcore RC fan, the Goldilocks or the RC worlds maybe 🤔😂👍

I think the lunchbox is perfect just the way it is out of the box! A torque tuned motor and maybe lock the rear differential...other than that, it is so much fun in its original form. No crazy hop-ups needed.

I think its one of those buggys that with a few upgrades. Bearings and motor. Is fun to drive. The other upgrades, may not make it faster. But its just fun to do. Out of all my buggys, the lunchie is one that i keep thinking about upgrading more. But i may do that to another one 🤔

I don't have a Lunchbox yet but I do have a GF01. I only upgraded the bearings and left the suspension alone as I think the bouncing is part of the experience. If and when a Lunchbox ever joins my household, I'll do the same with it.

The GF01 is great fun and can take a hell of a beating, we use ours often. I’m sure you have room somewhere for a Linchbox 🤣😂👍

Yes you do.. Get the shape shapeways widget that fixes the rear power module, get the tamiya speed or torque motor, sealed bearings over the stock bushings, they may be more. After that you'll have a comically fun wheelie machine that rolls like a bowling ball gone too fast, fun in the wet, light off road.

For me personally i dont need many upgrades. Speed tuned motor, metal bodyposts, ziptie mod for the back suspension and a diy strut brace for the front. Edit bearings i see as common sense to do 😂

I think you are right that’s the perfect beginning place and can leave it there also, I’d swap the motor to a Torque Tuned though 🤔👍

@RCsoandso yep torque is much cheaper but not much slower. I made a joke earlier. Choose the speed because I have too much money. But longer wheelies i find difficult to pull of. I have a torque tuned in box laying around. I wanted to participate in a race but I don't want to buy a transmitter they use for the price of a new lunchbox. They couldn't guarantee that i can rent one. So it's 3 hour drive and i didn't drive there.

Mine has bearings, an axle brace, oil shocks, rear shocks mount, front shock brace, and I'm on my 3rd servo saver (got a aluminum one in the mail) I also stole the torque tuned motor out of my Fat Fox to stick in there (cause you told me too hahah) Oh, and the aluminum body mounts. I might get a different wheelie bar since the stock one is self destructive. I don't think I'll do much else to my Lunchbox 😅

It doesnt matter what you do to a lunchbox it will always be a bouncy, bad handling, top heavy truck that shouldnt be taken too seriously. Fair enough iron out the weak points such as the body mounts and maybe add the rear brace but anything else is just fluff that you want to add for your own pleasure. The main thing with these is fun and to put your own mark on the shell design
