I'm Ojibwa Indian and I'm proud of it. I'm of the turtle clan. I make dream catchers and gift them to people.

Beautiful origin stories! I have a large one bought in Arizona. I believe it was made by the local Navahos - didn't know they originated with the Ojibwe. Very cool! Thank you!!

I only buy dreamcatchers made by First Nation people. Some places, saying they are raising money for indigenous children sell ones made in China. I don't understand why when they have access to items made by hand by those near to them.

I made one for myself for the exact reasons told in this video. I learnt the story and I have been reading tons and tons of things about everything being connected, the connection to our ancestors, the appreciation of culture, the spiritual purpose of the dreamcatcher. I have suffered from nightmares since I was a child, especially after developing complex trauma from generational trauma and other things that I don't have to go into. I postponed making one due to fears of appropriation, but knowing that it's okay if you know the story and know it's a medicine and what it's for, I made one for myself. I do not intend on making more, even if only as gifts because I know it won't have the same meaning as it does to me. And what I'm saying is not that other people won't understand the spiritual significance of the dreamcatcher, but that it will be more of a talking piece than anything since people around me don't believe in ancestral powers and the power of belief itself. I can say that the one I made has been helping me and not only that, when I made it and hung it and then smudged it with sage, a spider crawled up to it. And it's not something aesthetic and made of plastic or metal. It's made of grapevine, cotton string, glass beads, and duck feathers with a single bead in the middle and eight connecting points to the hoop. There is a difference between appropriation and appreciation, and there is a small difference between appreciation in itself and appreciation with belief attached, and I have the latter because I believe in thought form and I believe in the connection between all humans and our connection to the universe and the earth. I'm not Ojibwe, I have never stepped foot in the Americas, but I hope one day I can, if only to speak to these elders who still have a connection with the ancestral ways of living in harmony with nature and the universe. I may sound too weird but I have truly been on a journey, since I have felt my entire life that I belong nowhere and learning about indigenous peoples (and even my own indigenous ancestors who were all but wiped out along with the ancestral languages) has made me feel this pain I can't explain. I have always been connected (whether I liked it or not) to spiritual things, visions, feelings, touching people and having sensations, helping ease pain simply because I wanted people to feel better and put my hands on them to try to help and ended up feeling their pain for a bit and in turned eased theirs, and I tried to run from it because it scared me, but no more. After learning all of these things, I've reached the conclusion that I can only heal truly if I let my spiritual side exist without trying to avoid it. With the dreamcatcher medicine, all I wanted was for the nightmares to stop and they have.

Just make sure that it doesn't say "Made in China" on it when one buys a dream catcher. Those are fake through and through, and have not the sacred majick of a dream catcher made by an Indigenous person.Or one can make his/her own, learning properly, regardless of ethnicity.
