I'm part Nisga'a here on the western coast of british colombia, and my grandma has stories of when the Tseax Volcano erupted. She told me of when the rivers in the nass valley were bountiful with salmon, so much so, that you can walk across the river along the backs of the fish. The many higher spirits watched over the land, when some boys from one of the villages dotted along the river, came to the waters edge and pulled salmon out. As the fish struggled in the open air, it amused them, and they took sharp rocks and cut their backs open to jab into them sticks that were burning like candles. After doing this to many fish and putting them back into the water, watching the smoldering sticks weave their way up the river, the frog spirit got extremely upset that these boys would abuse such an important source of food that these salmon sacrifice themself for. In quick action, the frog spirit struck the valley, causing the earth to violently shake, open up, and lava to spill. The glowing, molten rock intercepted the river and flowed towards the villages, replacing water in the river with lava. One after the other, the villages and its inhabitants were consumed by the glowing red river. Hearing the chaos happening, our, and I quote "friends to the south prayed and called upon the great thunderbird to help us." After flying over the mountains and seeing the lava move towards another village, he layed his beak on ground, just beyond the village, making the lava flow elsewhere. People were saved, but villages were already gone. It is said that the cooled lava rocks seen from above, seem to have cooled in a straight line, and some have speculated that that's where the Thunderbird laid his beak Even in this instance, the Thunderbird was a protecting figure, much like the other nations who's stories told of such a bird.

Well done! My own native grandfather was honored with the name Chief Thunderbird by Lakota Chief Whirlwind Soldier after WW ll. Thus I have always felt the protective presence of Thunderbird. The old ones of my own tribe said the our Thunderbird had metal feathers that deflected arrows. Recently I heard another far away tribe had a similiar story of a metal clad Thunderbird long before airplanes were supposedly invented. Very curious.

I am of both Spanish, and Native heritage. The totem given to me is Crow. As I’ve come to embrace my totem, I have found a new found fascination and deep connection for the Thunderbird folklore. So far, this video has been the most cohesive, well thought out, and well written piece of information that I’ve found available on the subject. Mythos & Logos has consolidated a broad and scattered amount of information, and made it an accessible trail-head to further knowledge. I highly appreciate the hard work and detail put into this video.

There are several reports of hikers who have gone missing in Northern California who disappeared without a trace. Their footprints/trail come to an abrupt halt, as if they were taken by something above them. Dogs don't pick up any scent after that halting point. Be careful out there! Messengers, hard to describe but you recognize them in action... Definitely some major similarities here! Lame Deer’s quote on how you no one has seen a Thunderbird, but you can see it’s claws, reminds me of the question, “How many angels could fit on a pinhead?” Very metaphysical. Nice connection.

Thanks! That story is told by John Fire Lame Deer. I found it in the collection “Native American Myths and Legends” by Erdoes and Ortiz. I haven’t personally heard any Seminole Thunderbird stories, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t any; in fact, I know very little about the Seminole, so it just means I have more to learn.

On my dad's property in southern Missouri there is a rock bluff with native drawings on it, we were told it's a shrine to the underwater panther which is the enemy of the thunderbird but I haven't found much info on the subject, if anyone knows anything let me know like if I should start looking for a thunderbird shrine close by or something

Thank you so much! I love this! I was meditating and my front yard today. Standing with my feet on the grass. I was looking at the clouds and saw what I thought at first was a small airplane. It went pretty quick, I realized it had two sets of wings and they were moving in succession the front ones followed by the back ones. Is that a bird I said? It was quite a ways up but close enough to see it was not an airplane. It swooped around out of sight and I went around to look and of course it was gone. I went in the house and immediately looked up what mythical creature has two sets of wings? First picture it brings up is that white Thunderbird from Harry Potter. I tell you that was exactly what it looked like. I don't usually talk about the things I see, but I listened to all of the videos and most of them were just reading the things I found myself. Yours was really different. Thank you so much

As a fellow Louisianan I wonder if there is any Thunderbird references in local Choctaw tribes? Considering you said thunderbirds are prevalent around areas with a lot of water, I wonder if that’s applicable to the Choctaw people. Very Cool. Fascinating how Universal the Thunderbird is across (apparently) the entirety of N. America. Several things: first, you didn’t seem to recognize that there have been Actual Real, Physically manifested Monster Birds, animals which there are Many photos of, mostly it seems in the SW US and/or down into Mexico and S-ward. I have saved screenshots of several. There are also a few early photos of Monster Birds which were killed by huntersand which were stretched out, 1 against the wall of a barn as I recall. And based on the 8-10 guys standing next to it must’ve had a wingspan of 40-50 FEET. These ofcourse are kept in the realm of Crypto-Zoological creatures, even though the one is supported by a crystal clear black-white photo. What do you think of these? There are those in the field of cryptozoology who think these creatures are relictual avian dinosaurs, possibly Pterosaurs or Pteranodons (sp?). And then there are the cr3atures from the Chinese Astrological pantheon who are called Phoenixes. Although i think the Phoenix is considered a Dragon. What are your thoughts of the relatedness of these things? Important to bear in mind that most Anthropologists and Paleontologists link the Native American tribes to early (from before the most recent Ice Age) emigrants from Siberian and Mongolian tribes who slowly crossed across the Bering Land Bridge during times of periodic warming, so these peoples would’ve naturally brought along their mythological (or real) totemic animals.

@@spaalqutsi Thank you for a very thoughtful comment. You are absolutely right, in many cultures there are some stories which are more open to outsiders, and others which aren’t. I will definitely do my best to make sure that I am echoing indigenous voices with these, rather than focusing on my own. I think it would be a good idea for me to make sure that, in cultures where these stories are still living, I also share how they are today. There is a lot of shameful, tragic history, and letting people know that these people are still here and alive is very important. Thanks for a very thoughtful comment, I really appreciate it.

@@mythosandlogos Sure. Two of us were sitting in a 3/4 ton truck on a dirt road facing west near the old base at El Toro, California, the dirt road ran parallel with a long roll of Eucalyptus trees. We got a call on the radio, started the truck, then heard a loud cracking of a Eucalyptus tree in front of us. It sounded like the tree was breaking. A giant bird flew out of one of the trees in front of us about 100 feet away. It flapped it’s wings and was gone over the rooftops of the houses to our right, which was in northern direction. The bird’s wingspan was much larger than the width of the road. I estimated to be 20-25 feet wide. So yes, the Thunderbird is real.
