Do you Really need a Style as a Graphic Designer?

This is sooo real. After I managed to stop caring about developing a cohesive style, I turned around one day and realized I sort of had one that was more adaptable than if I'd just forced one. And love the bit about not becoming a character of yourself!

I’m bumping into this issue with my first graphic design job. My internship in college wanted one specific style which didn’t bother me since it was the style I was used to doing. Now I am being forced to think in several different styles and while I love it I will admit it is kind of hard at times Your video really helped me think through embracing this change. Thanks 😃

I am at the point where i am stuck in the box like you mentioned, especially with my style of artwork. This is very similar (if not the same) to what we painters face. For me, as a painter who does this as a hobby, I discovered my style of painting early on, so that everyone knows that I own the painting just by looking at it. At the time, I was like, well, I sometimes like to confront others in their styles, but I think I like to do something my way in this way, and this is the result that I always like to see.

when I was in school I was fascinated by some of the design work that would be hanging in the studios----all done by my professor. the thing that bothered me was even though I liked his work (the look), I did not understand what design was about. in trying to figure this out I learned about Paul rand (one of my favorite designers). his IBM (with the eye, the bee and letter M) was so pivotal in my design education (that breakthrough moment). in reading more about him I came across a quote of his that helped me calm my obsession with having a style. he said, "don't try to be original. just try to be good." I never forgot that quote-----it helped me worry less about trying to be different....and focus more on just improving as a designer.

I've been completely open with designing and taking in different styles that I feel when it comes to my own style or just designing for myself, I find myself wanting to be playful and almost incorporate "bad" design to stay away from what I'm used to.

That's a great perspective to hear on the opportunities missed when specializing into a specific style. What do you think of the opposite camp who would argue that being a specialist allows you to know your stuff so well, and be so good that opportunities will come for that expertise?
