This video has saved me honestly. For the past couple of years I have been trying to find my mysterious art style for years. I have completely forgot to enjoy what I love doing. What happened to our childlike enthusiasm? If I wanted to be a bird, I wouldn't study them, I would just start flying.

The simplest truths are the ones that we take for granted. Phrases like "just be yourself" and "the best things in life are free" are repeated so often, we become numb to the wisdom in the words. But there is a reason those simple truths persist. And as you go through life, you will have experiences that remind you of how true these little phrases really are. It feels like hearing it for the first time because you now have a new level of understanding. This doesn't just happen once. It happens over and over and over. We constantly learn the same simple lessons, or we deepen our understanding of them. This is true in art, too. All those "simple platitudes" persist for a reason. You may think you've discovered a new insightful take on a question, but then years later, you realize you were only grasping at the early stages of understanding, and that simple truth you were told about art all the way since elementary school art class was actually right all along. Anyway.

An art style is just a compilation of shapes one artist tends to repeat. In the repetiton a design system can be recognized. You can deconstruct all image making into bidimentional shapes on a plane. The amount of shapes and combinations between them is infinite. Artists tend to discover that some groups of shapes work better together and start developing them adding more shape combinations over time. If you are aware of this process you can invent systems of shapes and develop or reproduce "styles". Take into note that shapes can be anything on a plane: certain type of contrasts, patterns, variations, lines in all of their iterations, roundness, geometrical, organic, groups of colors, infinite, etc.

I believe that an art style is simply another form of handwriting. You start shaping it as a tiny child, without even knowing it. Children, unlike most adults, are inspired by things in an organic way, and they're much more malleable if someone is making them write/draw in a certain way. My handwriting looks a bit different now from ten years ago, and a lot different from twenty years ago. This is because I've been handwriting things _copiously_ (for school and hobbies), and the change happened organically. If I had done that much art for that long, I would be able to see a slow shift in my art style too; both consistencies and improvements. Also, my handwriting looks different depending on if I use a pencil, a brush pen, a chisel-tip sharpie, a gel pen, a quill, or a tablet pen, and also depending on the speed of writing and the amount of effort I put into it. There are elements that remain, and someone who knows my school notebook handwriting well could probably tell that I'm the one who wrote all those others too, but medium and effort impact style. And it is possible to learn a new handwriting, but this will not be an organic process. You can learn to write so it looks like a computer printout, or like a medieval monk printed it. You can learn to text neatly in huge letters for menu blackboards, or to do paintbrush calligraphy. This all takes massive amounts of focus, practise, and time. Maybe you'll even find your own medieval monk style, which may or may not look anything like your "just writing a quick note to my catsitter/doing up a shopping list" handwriting. So I believe that it's the same for art styles. You can have more than one, depending on the medium, the purpose or how you learned it. There may or may not be any obvious consistencies between them. But maybe your "true" art style is that one that comes out as "just scribbling a playful cat on a note to my catsitter/doodling in the margins while doing up a shopping list"? This has been a metaphor, actually. ;)

Hey, I love this metaphor! This has been my experience with both handwriting and drawing - I developed a personal style real early, so my challenge has been to expand beyond it, lol. I enjoy watching videos like this one from the perspective of, like, a 40-year old going back to college for a totally different degree - I've GOT one already, so I don't have the panicked scrambling vibes of the actual 20-year-olds who feel totally lost without one, but I am also doing all the same work and aiming for the same goals... Just not for the same reasons, ya know?

@@morguedesign Great to hear - I think you are a star in the making! I refer to artistic style as a distinctive visual language. I think the interesting thing is the impact that AI will have on the longivety & benefit of a distinct style. Historically people could develop a unique visual language and own it for years if not decades. Arguably many artists we look back to were the pioneer of that style & even if other people copied and developed similar they would still be held in the highest regard. With AI, the longevity of a unique style becomes years, even months, before it is potentially swamped out with clones. So I think you are right to focus on quality and style flexibility to suit the need of the job at hand.

Top tier video 🔥💯🔥 As someone who's watched at least a few of the videos you talked about, I really appreciate you clarifying that art style really isn't something to worry over. Looking back at my art, my pieces don't look that cohesive, but I've always wanted different things with each piece (different levels of realism, different proportions, different colour palettes, etc.). If what my brain is inspired to make is different each time, I shouldn't try to force it to match something I've done before.

This was super interesting to watch. I think something that sticks out to me about a lot of these is that they seem to be aimed at absolute beginners who have no idea what they're doing. Which I guess is valid, that's probably the audience most likely to look for videos like that on youtube (especially given the general age of the userbase lol) but it does also mean a lot of the advice ends up kind of generic and not super useful to anyone who's an intermediate. But yeah, I'm personally in the camp of "art style isn't something you should focus on so much" so I'm always a little surprised by people being so desperate to build a personal style.

I get the most satisfaction in the rendering process. Getting the big shapes down and composition and all the ugly stages in between are only motivated to get finished cause I know at the end I get to put all the little details in and rendering the deepest shadows and lightest highlights. All the things that make a single dot of paint cause the whole branch or petal or blade of grass can push or pull different elements forward or backward. Playing with color and light is also what makes my brain bees purr. I take a lot of satisfaction in the process, but that only came once my own internalized critical parent part in my brain stop judging everything I was doing and quieted down so my right brain could be creative and find the joy in it instead of trying to be the best or perfect. I also have to continue work on the discipline that is required to not get lost in the dopamine soup of doing the detail part endlessly and eventually call it done. That’s actually harder than stopping being judgmental of my own work.

This is a great video. It just showed up in my recommended, and I figured I'd give it a look since I don't really feel like I have an art style (at least not an efficient and pretty one), but my bf and I are going to be starting a web comic at some point in the near future with me being the only artist. I'm not a beginner, but I definitely don't draw as much as I should, and that lack of practise often manifests in unfinished pieces, a lack of ideas, very quick burnout, etc. One thing I do find interesting is that I'm an artist but I'm also a writer, and in fact, I'm a much better writer than I am an artist. I write and write and write and can't stop, nor would I ever want to stop. And one thing that I've never once worried about when writing is having a distinct style or voice. When I take a step back, I can definitely see repeating themes, character types, tropes, etc. And taking a magnifying glass to my work, I can see words I tend to favour (at least in early drafts) and phraseology I use a lot. But never once have I identified with that style or worried about "crafting" it. I think maybe that's an attitude I should bring to my art. I'm at a level in my writing where, when I'm really in the zone, I bleed words painlessly, and time seems to slip away, and I no-doubt /have/ a writing style. But for art, I'm just not at the level in that craft that things come to me effortlessly and in a way I find pride in enough to claim it is "my style". But I will be one day, and there's no need to rush.

What a great video!! Very underrated ahah I really like your insight about this subject, as it is, indeed, something still very opaque for a lot of artists out there! Personally what I like to do (and hope it'll help me), is recreate other artists' style, and experiment drawing something with different priorities, as you mentioned with the example of Walt Disney, maybe searching for a way to draw or simplify some stuff that resonates with me :)

So guys art styles are a set of rules that you set for yourself and they wont manifest unless you keep experimenting. Lets say you like angular cartoony styles and cyberpunk colors, you want the style to be simple. So you sit and decide that these eyes will be slanted and pointy, that the highlight in the hairstrand will be in the shape of an H. You dislike how certain anatomy looks in your artwork so you reduce the details... Instead of asking how to develop your style sit and decide what you like and make artstyle prototypes, as time goes you will implement fundamentals into your art and try many techniques you find interesting and you want to try them.

This is exactly what worked for me! My motivation had been burned by repeatedly directionless character sketches, because although I had some idea what I wanted my style to represent, the actual depiction of it was difficult to realize. I was so disappointed in myself, and upset that in spite of carrying so much love for drawing and imagination, it was as if I couldn't draw anything at all. This was after coming out of a years long drawing rut/hiatus btw, in which I let pessimism take my passion away. I stagnated. Hadn't even kept up with any guides or resources to at least come back with something. I couldn't emphasize enough how defeated I'd feel to never like what I put down, even though it was a part of me. Well, one day, I decided to sort of recenter myself and start over. Let go of my indecision and directly address it: What are the aspects emphasized by my favorite artists that I'd most love to recreate? And, if I can be fair to myself, have patience, and take it slow...(very slow!) what can I do to innovate on them, creating something that resonates with me as their works did? I started with a character I was invested in, as their set design could help inform the decisions I wanted to make, and a simple prompt that could let me easily flex creativity. (I went with a redesign) I was meticulous with this process, even taking moments to stare at the canvas before determining what to do next. "I know I want relative simplicity, so that'll be my priority." "Mega Man characters feature immediately recognizable, but less detailed hair. Other series I enjoy have this sort of approach, I love it, let's go with that." "Big and expressive eyes with simple shapes are a must." Thoughts like these carried me through, and I ended up making something unusually solid that I was very happy with. It was the style for me, even if it maybe could've been different, because I was so happy to see it and appreciate it. And keep in mind, to any who want to try this, your style can still change and be fluid! Even now, as I intend for my new character drawings to take from the guidelines set by that process, I've found myself making unconscious changes that carry its spirit, but are nevertheless different. I'm actually trying to veer closer to that original now after having noticed, and that's developing into a sort of hybridization of the two, which is fine. Don't worry about some of the details, because you'll only further hone in on what you want as you improve. To whoever reads this, sorry for the long read! But I hope you may be able to take something from my experience, and keep loving art. Even if you don't think you can draw, I encourage you to find your creativity on the canvas. It's there for everyone, of every skill level, and will always be waiting for your impression.

There was one video I watched I think about a year ago that said art style was fluid so it was narrow minded to think you would have a consistent art style, people when searching for these kinds of videos often delve in thinking that an art style is something that stays consistent and will stay with you the rest of your illustrating career- of course I am not speaking for everyone, this was only a small snippet of my experience and many others whom have talked about it and had struggled with the problems that came with it. What the dude in the vid in the end is basically, just, try to improve. Experiment on what sat right with you. Practice and have fun. Thats it in a nutshell anyways lol. So have fun drawing :] focusing too much to find your own groove is something that takes a long ass time- hell it maybe even come out of the closet right outta the blue. Ya'll got this >:' ]

Your art looks very cool! As for art style videos, I'm a beginner and looking for art style tips because I picked up art just to be able to maybe make a game sometime in the future. I'm in the same boat. I think copying and dissecting other artists' work has so far been the most useful exercise. Knowing fundamentals might help too but they are not enough.
