I've been saying for over a half a century that if you want expansion from a 45 Auto, you need a 185gr HP moving at 1,000 fast. Your test here simply reinforced what I've known for ages.😏
@therichie9916
@therichie9916 5 ай бұрын
That's only because most people now of days want 3-3.5" barrels for their carry guns. A 4.5-5" barrel with a good performing 230gr HP will still and always give you superior performance. Of course guns that size require real men to carry them. I've done it for over 35 years without any issues.

Though I haven't bought factory ammo except for rimfire, in decades, I was never worried about plain 45 ball ammo I used in S.E. Asia long ago. I can personally attest to it's ability to get the job done. I've loaded my own for well over 60 years. And have used JHP bullets in loading for my 45's in the past with greatest results using 185gr bullets loaded just a tad under the listed max loads. Hitting various varmints caused devastating wounds. Today, I cast and load 180gr and 200gr SWC for my two 1911A1 pistols. The 200gr is very effective on the number of wild hogs here in E.Texas, seldom ever requiring a follow up shot. And it bowls over coyotes with ease. Using the current prices of powder and primers, my cast loads in the 45 Auto are 12 cents a piece. And my test media is varmints. Likely, they'd act differently in a jelly test.😏

I don’t understand the hate for .40, it’s still a fantastic round
@johndilday1846
@johndilday1846 5 ай бұрын
Most of the hate for the .40 is due to the heavy recoil from shooting it in pistols designed for 9mm Parabellum. I have a pistol that is a bit heavier and it is pretty tame, relatively speaking.

The 40 hate comes from 9mm guys who say “my 9 is as good as a 40 or 45” while deep down they know they are delusional and they want you to believe their bullshit too. They in turn espouse the superiority of their little 9mm to try and drag us on their band wagon.

What I don't understand about bullet manufacturers is why don't they actually give you more velocity than what it's showing on the box, All it would take just add a tad bit more powder in the casing to bump up velocity... That's why I only purchase Buffalo bore ammo because they give you more velocity when you actually shoot it then what the box shows. Great vid!!!❤💯🤟😎👍

Folks tend to forget that the .45ACP round had a "side" requirement from the U.S. Army that is rarely mentioned today. It had to launch a bullet of sufficient weight/mass and velocity to stop a charging horse.....A requirement passed on from the older .45 Colt's. The bullet weight was finalized at 230grns. There are many more details to the story of the development of the .45ACP but I'll leave that research to those who are interested in why the 9mm was not chosen way back when as that story is so convoluted an untold number of trees have died so many, many volumes explaining, complaining about, and arguing the results could be printed.
@rickh9396
@rickh9396 5 ай бұрын
Hornady may have used a softer lead for those .45 ACP bullets to expand at slower speeds, or a harder lead than usual for the .40. Most Critical Defense loads expand a lot and penetrate a bit shallow, but this .40 expanded more like a Critical Duty.

I think you just made a good recommendation for those who carry lightweight shorter 45 ACP’s. As I also carry a 3.6” 40 I must say this is a timely and well done test. BTW, thanks for your even handed treatment and consideration of all calibers instead of just 9mm everything. To those of us who carry other calibers we do very much appreciate that. Ironically I am carrying 30 Super Carry experimentally as well so the above comments apply there too. This cartridge has not yet found its niche. In a slimmer slide than a 9mm pistol in full size or compact is where that niche would be found with 19-23 round capacity. For the 30 SC to be truly relevant the gun has to be built specifically to take advantage of the skinnier dimensionality of the cartridge. We don’t have that yet, but maybe……
@ToolsandTargets
@ToolsandTargets 5 ай бұрын
Thank you sir. I think you're right. The 30SC was designed for the wrong market in my opinion. If they would have gotten that cartridge running in a "pocket" gun with power between a .380 and 9mm, it may have been something. I think they're so far off from that now that it would take a complete redesign. But they're the experts and I just shoot bullets into gel on YT so 🤷‍♂️

I buy whatever the local dealer has from the latest contract overrun. I honestly don't think a huge difference in the latest LE ammo exist from brand to brand. They seem to do similar damage in flesh. I carry a .45 mostly because the G30 fits my 8"+ mitts better. The cavity in gel doesn't really mean anything. Tissue is elastic enough it doesn't react to handgun velocities that way. Average expanded diameter x depth is likely a better metric. I can't really tell a notable difference in tissue (We are constantly culling wild hogs on our farm).

Been watching your videos and others like it for a while now. My conclusion is that, outside of magnum calibers, bullet construction is the primary indicator of terminal performance. The manufacturers try to make everything meet FBI standards for penetration, etc. So, get the one that you shoot best and makes you most confident. If you want to go through barriers or thick hide or whatever, switch to a hard cast lead bullet.

IIRC it was rated for 1120 out of a 5". It looked like the 40 was a bit snappier in this test and that's no surprise given the pressure difference. This is another great presentation showing the need for such testing.

Maybe with lead core, with solid copper 160 gr is common for .45

When it comes to .45 ACP,. 185 grain is really a lightweight, unless you take weird lead-free rounds into account. The 165 in .40 S&W really is mid weight if you don't take the lead free into account.

Always some good info here! Several years ago at a ballistics seminar put on by the local FBI office, we tested 165 gr HST .40s from a local PD's custom extended barrel Glock 22s and then from my tiny Kahr PM40. (I know I had 165 gr, I cannot swear their weren't the 180 gr HSTs but I think we shot the same thing). We fired through "light clothing" (two layers of T-shirt), both rounds stopped side-by-side at exactly 16" and looked identical. Both completely expanded and to the eyeball, no difference at all. I was surprised as I figured from that tiny Kahr barrel there was no way that round would expand. I guess that big ol' wide mouthed hollowpoint just didn't need as much push. BUT that's HSTs and these here were Critical Defense, apples to oranges. Still, great info! Thanks!

@@ToolsandTargets Yes, sir! Practically barrier blind, too! We did the full FBI test using car steel, tempered windshield glass, different clothing layers ... Gonna suck when my stash runs low one day, LOL. You should have seen what Federal 62 gr JSP .223 did! Flipped one block over, split the plywood under the block, and broke the crossbeam on the saw horse underneath. And stayed in the first bock, IIRC. Probably a terrible choice for hunting anything with more than 2 legs, though. ;)

I carry that .40 ammo in a 5" M&P 2.0. Measured one I fired through water jugs, and it expanded to .731" after exploding two jugs and ripping up the third one.

Nice test, but what a head-scratcher. Both performed ok. But more for Hornady fans, as there are better ones out there. The disruption in the gel by the .45 looked measly, but then again we are talking 9x19 ish energy levels. And the subdued expansion on the .40 🤔. Is that enough, you be the judge

I think the 45 took that one. Great expansion and great penetration. Win win for me. I do carry these in the winter when I carry my G30. So it’s good to see they’d get it done. But the .40 would certainly get it done too. Good stuff as always 👍🇺🇸🇺🇸

The jacket on the 40 wasn't thin enough for decent expansion, whereas in the 45, it was. My guess is, if the barrels were at spec length, you would have the same result.

The underlaying part to all of these tests is "shot placement." There are specific areas of a human body to aim for that would cause certain death in minutes without trauma care. I suggest that everyone research this. It will be a game changer for you.

I hate the critical duty in 40. It’s not a really good performer for expansion. The winner is always going to be the Federal HST or the Speer Gold Dot.

That 45 was surprising, back in December 2019 I picked up a 25rd box in 9mm and the cases were nickel plated, has Hornady got cheap on us with brass cases? Enjoyed It regardless, Thanks Brian, have a safe weekend. 👍🇺🇸

Yeah, they jumped on the "supply chain" excuse with some of the others to increase profit by stopping the nickel plating. Plain ol greed.

Good test, Brian! I've never been a big fan of the Hornady ammo, even when it works perfectly. I much prefer the Gold Dot and the Lehigh Xtreme Defender ammo. While I like Hornady, they always come down th 3rd or 4th choice. Not bad, but never at the top of the magazine! Call me picky if you like, I sure won't argue! Cheers, jc
