I agree with all of that Omar . I shoot 16mm and trust me, I have no regrets for my street ; historic gardens and homes and travel to need more megapixels . In fact , it wasn’t all that long ago when I gave up using my 6 megapixel camera to my nephew as he wanted to learn photography . As somebody once said : the gear doesn’t matter . Just train your eye to see and go out there to capture a story in one or a sequence of images . Omar, this was another great lesson you have put out there to educate those who might need it. If you want to spend money then get a lens , produce a book or save up for a trip that will give you loads of fabulous pictures . Regarding the latter point , those places are way closer to home than you might think . Finally - always carry a camera and we all do that these days : it’s our phone . Big thanks once again for another first class video .

Actual reasons 40mp helps. Cropability. I'm sorry, even as a professional, sometimes I need to crop into my photos for the composition I was trying for. With 40mp, you have an unbelievable amount of room to crop in as you proved with the 16 vs 40. So, I can crop into 25% of the image and still have a wonderful photo to deliver. That means, I can digitally zoom 2x and reach farther. Shooting the rings being exchanged for example, I can get tighter without blocking everyone's view. 40mp is extremely useful. Not to mention the AF improvement.

Good video as always. I'd like to add disadvantages of the 40 MP compared to the 24 MP: you'll need more storage space, more money for SD cards, you'll have to wait longer for your computer to process the files when editing them, and you need very good and expensive lenses to actually use the high resolution sensor.

You don't need "very good and expensive lenses" to use the new sensor. You need Fujifilm's more recent lenses to _optimize_ the resolving power of the new sensor. Older lenses will continue to produce images that look just as good as they do via the 26MP sensor.

I've been using the A7r3 for a few years now and although I might take allot of shots in macro photography to get the perfect one. I still cull allot so not so bad on the HD space to be honest. As for processing time I do find that my X-T2 raws take longer to render in Capture one than the larger sony 42mp raws but I think that's down to fuji's sensor array. So, yes 40mp fuji raws are going to take longer to render I think... Nothing my M1 Mac Pro can't handle though :-) I'm a bit miffed that my XF16 1.4 lens didn't make the recomended list...

@@amitkrupal1234 This will never happen and here's why. MP is largely irrelevant when it comes to noise/low light performance. Sensor size determines that. Downsize the 40MP image to 12MP and you will have the same result as a 12MP sensor. Use AI based noise reduction algorithms and the 40MP sensor will come out ahead of the the 12MP sensor.

Any resolution arguments for video and photos can be resolved by filtering out the low frequencies. The difference in the end result is insignificant. On the other hand, 100mp with medium format glass produces an advantage useful to many professionals, if one does not mind the disadvantages that come with such a setup.

I started shooting runway models and the ability to crop is a game changer for me. I don’t always get a great spot at these events, but being able to crop in (even with the 50-140’s reach) can make a stunning close up portrait out of a full body shot. I also love the ability to use the sports finder mode and still get a nice 24mp image! I shoot with both the X-H2 and the X-T5. I gotta have my dials!
@TimvanderLeeuw
@TimvanderLeeuw Жыл бұрын
For me the important advantage is cropping. Right now, when shooting birds they're often a bit far away for the 150-600mm still. Cropping to just the "good bits" of an image doesn't leave many pixels, so I cannot make the image very large. Not printable anymore. But getting closer was not an option either, and putting on a teleconverter would have just resulted in loss of light, and poorer AF. And for macro, well macro is "all about the details", isn't it? 😉 I hope that I can extract more details out of a 40mp sensor vs a 24mp sensor. And again, can make tight crops and still get nice details for an image which is printable at reasonable size. So I expect an X-T5 will give me better AF than the X-H1/X-T3, and also allow me to crop a bit more. For landscape shots or portraits it won't really matter indeed. If there would have been 2 X-T5s, one with the 40mp sensor and one with the stacked 26mp sensor, then... I might have preferred the faster stacked sensor for better bird / wildlife AF, maybe not. The choice would have been a lot harder for me! For me personally the X-H2(s) has too many compromises to enjoy shooting with it, so the choice between the X-H2 and X-H2s has for me already been answered with "no". So yeah, I've like more megapixels. For certain uses. Another improvement of the 40mp sensor btw, is the lower base-ISO which, according to the numbers, should give a somewhat increased dynamic range. This could be a benefit for landscape photography, and perhaps also for other types of photography where high contrast can be expected.

Thank you for putting out a comparison! I noticed the difference the most in the detail of the camera body. I was semi-questioning my decision to preorder the X-T5 (as one does with big purchases, or at least me anyway), and this actually solidified for me that the upgrade is warranted! My wildlife photography benefits greatly from cropping and I hate losing too many small details. I also have a few of the lenses that can take full advantage of the higher resolution, so I won't have to buy any lenses for the full advantage here. I'm not sure if you mentioned in this video what lens you were using, but hopefully it was one of the ones Fuji has said can utilize the full 40mp.

The major reason for 40 MP is the ability to crop an image and maintain the image quality after a crop. Rarely can I use an image that doesn't require some cropping, so with an increase in MP you can assurance that the quality will remain high.

printers do 300 dpi for a reason. we can see that amount of detail. A 24 Mpex camera 6000x4000 pixels can be printed at 20x13 inches maximum. But there is a medium format, leica look that has to do with tonal graduation that is retained even when you downsample the image for a screen. I believe that is a reason to go for 40 mpex, the pictures may look more alive than others even when you don't need more detail you may need better tonal resolution.

Two reasons for me to "upgrade" from X-S10. 1) Cropping. I don't have to buy (and carry) some incredibly high-priced lense (sic) to photograph boats on the lake. 2) Autofocus. Today, I shot a lot of faces, and a lot of scenes with no faces. According to the X-S10, some of the faces weren't faces, and some of the non-faces were. I understand that the X-T5 fixes this.

40mp vs 26mp let’s you crop in 22% without loss of fidelity, 40mp vs 16mp let’s you crop is 58%. Sometimes it’s not about extra detail, but more about carrying less glass or having more freedom in post. For example, I’m heading to NZ soon to do wildlife photography. 16mp is fine enough for most prints, but at 40mp I have the option of taking the tamron 18-300 and have almost the same effective reach as if I had taken a 16mp camera with a 150-500 or 150-600 lens. You can basically think of it a teleconverter you don’t have to carry with you. That isn’t for everyone, but it certainly works for me.

It's not just about the number of pixels; it's about color fidelity. Extra pixels contribute to richer images, which become particularly noticeable when capturing sunsets, clouds, or portraits. Black-and-white images also benefit significantly from additional pixels. Ultimately, the bottom line is that it depends on your preferences. If you appreciate the picture you’ve presented, then the pixel count may not matter as much.

Very true, pixel peeping always looks better, but it can't make a 'uninteresting' image 'interesting'. I figured that the extra crop factor would be the main reason for an X-T5. With the 16-80mm, at the long end it is 80 * 1.5 = 120 mm (35mm equiv). If you crop down the X-T5 to 10 MPIX that gives you an extra crop factor of 2X, so that 80mm can be used as a 120 * 2 = 240mm (35mm equiv). I thought that would be useful.

For me, I find it a shame Fuji changed the all-rounder formula of the X-T4 to a very heavily photo centric formula on the X-T5 and also removed the flippy screen. I'm sticking with my X-S10 until there is a mark 2 maybe :) My wish list for the X-S10 II is the new sensor/autofocus, 10 bit and no more 30 min record limit! - the X-H2 looks great, but it's far too big for my daily carry.

200% is not dumb because any large print is that or more. Anything over 16x20 will be visably better with 40mp and is why Sony changed the game years back with the a7r2. For web not important. For prints, huge difference.

Have been using my XH2 now for about a week. I do like it, coming from DSLR Canon. Definite a learning curve as I was very comfortable with my old DSLR, but the fuji works well. Everything you would expect from a high end camera. Yes there is a slight difference in perceptible resolution but comes with negatives as well. Not enjoying the file sizes, going to be problematic for sure.

Interesting. What about the resolving power of the lens used? Much ado is being made about the new 56mm f1.2 WR, I have the original 56mm F1.2 non WR. If you tested it with the new glass which fuji seems to be championing what would a side by side look like then. Every time fuji launches a new camera Im wondering should I upgrade? My last upgrade was from Xpro1 to a Xpro2 and XT2. They do the job and do it well, 40 MP is tempting but….does it make fiscal sense. I’ll probably still be debating this question when the XT 9 comes out 😮

I just finished Omar's series on lighting. Give that man my old 3.3 MP Canon G1 while I use a 40 MP X-H2 and his photos will still be miles better than mine. Gear is awesome, but it is useful to augment your skill. With a few exceptions, it doesn't magically give you skills. (Still want an X-H2 ;). One day...)

I shoot mostly skylines, and I just sent my X-H2 back because I wasn't sure it had enough resolution...at least with the 16-80mm kit lens anyway. It' might be enough with some razor sharp primes, but I didn't have it long enough to test it on buildings with various lenses. I may get it again though, since most of my camera kit is Fuji X. What I'd like is either a new GFX 50S III with an updated sensor and about 60 mp, or a Nikon Z8 with Sony's 60mp sensor in it, but neither of those have been invented yet. Arggghhhh! When they do get invented, I'm going to take a bath on my X Glass probably. But since I can't have the ultimate, it's back to my X-T3 and old Nikon FF for now. I miss the days that only the film and the lens made a difference.

Thanks Omar,another thoughtful video. I shoot with and love an XT3. I probably will upgrade to the XT5 for the better autofocus,IBIS and occasional wild life and landscape. If I had a choice between a 40 mp and 26 mp XT5 I would go for the 40mp just a bit more vesitile. Most importantly now I don't need the GFX100S I've been lusting after(or do I?).

When doing comparisons like this, it is worth remembering that the resolution on your screen have a major impact on what you see. I sit on a laptop with a 1920x1080 resolution display. That is 2 million pixels. It doesn't matter if he throws a 16MB file or a 40MB file up for me to look at. I will never see more than 2MB of information in any of them anyway.

It's not just about the 40mp, like Tim, it's about IBIS, back to the old-style rear screen, AF, Battery life improvement and it's time for an upgrade, I avoided the XT4, with its bigger body and flippy screen.

to be honest, I've been consdering that X-T5 to replace my X-T2, but after a little bit of thought.... the X-T2 can easily go on for a few more years no problem. I originally unpgraded from the X-T1 not because of the resolution, bur because I wanted a camera that was a little bit easier to use on a day to day basis : double SD slot just created a safety net when I'm shooting small events and stuff like that (I do not have to backup the files regularly like I was doing with the X-T1), and when I'm shooting for me, then I can separate JPEGs and RAW files so it's easier to sort out on the computer. AF-C is actually reliable once you know what you're doing (wasn't even customizeable on the X-T1, and not realiable at all), AF joystick just makes things easier The X-T5 would be a similar kind of upgrade, except that it would not be on te same areas. Instead of a joystick and double SD cards, it would be a larger battery and IBIS. Instead of plainly faster autofocus, it would be improved subject detection. I don't care that much about resolution, but the X-T5 is definitely on my list of cameras to look after in a few years for the things mentionned

Excellent video. By the way: "Do you need", please let me give you one of the psychological definition of needs: "A need is the expression of a feeling of lack". Feeling, feeling of lack are very personal. If someone feels sad or unhappy because he doesn't have a 40MP sensor, as his friends have, so he do needs a 40MP sensor. To feel happy is one of the most important needs of people, or not? Thanks again for your good work, I'm happy to be subscribed ;-)

I firmly believe that if we are paying for a high-resolution sensor, damn right I am going to pixel peep and make sure I am getting every pixel of what I am paying for. Having said that, a few years ago I went from a 36-megapixel A7r to a 16-Megapixel Panasonic G80 and I started taking the best photos I have ever taken. Resolution is nice, but much more important is the sharpness of the attached lens, OIS, autofocus performance, usability, durability, weight, and of course using that saved money to pay for trips to actually take the pictures.

Hi Omar, nice video. I do have X Pro2/XH1 and Im very happy with those two cameras but since XH2 is out now with 40 mpx. there is one area where I would see my self like to have those 40 mpx and those are post production flexibility of skin tones in Photoshop thats probably it. Most of the time its about what we want and not what we need good photographer will do magic with 24mpx camera. I do remember my wedding was shot with 12mpx camera and pictures come out very nice.

What is ironic about the megapixel battles is most/not all people are looking at photos on their like phones/tablet etc. which depending on the device has varying display rates, internet speeds….settings etc. Had a potential client chose another photographer because they had higher megapixel equipment but the job was web based. Whatever dude…

Not sure I'll be upgrading, maybe side grading. I shoot a combination of Canon cameras right now, an A-1 and an FT-b(new). I have a Nikon EM that I'm working on repairing so I can use that for it's small size and nice Nikon Lenses, and I'm also in the process of getting a Kodak Brownie Hawkeye running again. But I'm also planning on adding an XT-5 to my collection. It should just be easier to go out and take photos with it, and then if I want to make prints for anyone other than myself, I'll probably use the XT-5 for that as well. Now the film cameras will still be fun time cameras for me, and also they'll help with vintage feel for some shoots. For instance, I'm curious to see how Kodak Tri-X, which dates back a long time, will compare to BW film simulations on the XT-5 for photography at WWII events. I have found that using the right film and scanner combination can make a photo of vintage equipment look way older than the photo really is. I really want to see how Fuji's film sims compare. I also do some wildlife photography, so I'm hoping that the 40mp will help with that as you suggested it may, although the point of comparison will be film, since that's all I know right now. One thing that I like about the 40mp sensor which some people may not consider(for this reason) is simply the resolution. I like making desktop backgrounds. For now, "4k" is becoming more and more common, but "8k" displays already exist. It may not be too long before people are running "8k" displays, and to make a photo that looks good on an "8k" screen, I'll need at least 7680x4320 resolution and the new 40mp sensor can do that with a small crop. So, if I have a great camera that I plan on using for a while, and it has enough resolution to fill that "need" than I won't be thinking of upgrading super soon. I may skip a few generations before getting a new digital camera.

Super video. I didn't need to hear all the specs all over again. You presented a lot of great information for someone to make a decision that is best for them. I appreciate the intelligent approach. I have an X-T3 and decided to skip the X-T4, thinking that the X-T5 (two years later) would be a better upgrade. Your parting comments about the true benefits ring true for me. The X-T3 doesn't have IBIS and I didn't feel I needed that. But given that the X-T5 essentially has a second-generation and I have read that it's gotten smaller (ish), I think IBIS is probably worth having. I will take the plunge no doubt but my eyes are wide open now about the benefits (or not) of 40 megapixels vs. 26.

I'm watching on a 80 inch TV in my living room perhaps 4 meter away I cant tell any difference. Only time I want more resolution is when I work on images in photoshop on my 4k display its just slightly easier to work on an images with higher resolution. An option is ofc to change the display resolution to something lower.

Yes, I not only need but want the 40mp sensor. Being able to use decent lenses that capture 40mp, KZbin photos prove nothing, this isn’t a medium that proves the worth of photos or not. A photographers needs are personal and individual. Campaigning against the XT5 is fine if that’s what you want to do, but your views don’t dictate whether any other photographer should upgrade or not.

I have an X-Pro2 and loving it. But the IBIS, tilt screen and more megapixels on the X-T5, is really compelling to me. I've been doing a lot of macro stuff with the 65mm Laowa 2:1 lens and I'm so curious to see how that would look with 40 MP. Already looks crazy at 24!

Loved the video, Omar, however you may have missed something very important. Turn the tables and have the lower resolutions images zoom in to match the 40mp of the X-T5/X-H2. It's not until you get into fine details that you truly realize the benefit of higher resolution images and see the smaller files break apart. An example would be reading the text on a tire that may be nothing more than a blob of pixels on the smaller res file. If we're all being honest here, a very small minority of photographers will consistently need the benefits of more resolution beyond the "Goldilocks" resolution of 20-26mp. Like you said, we're paying to upgrade the processor, autofocus, and all the other separate strengths these cameras bring to the table. If you're not a photographer that plans to zoom into fine details and precisely apply direct pixel level editing, don't expect to be totally shocked or blown away with better image quality over what you're shooting now.

Absoutely right. I''ve owned the Xt3, Xt4, X70, GFX 50s II, and X100V for personal and client work. The end result of 90% of my client work is for web and social media. You can't tell he difference at all between the 26 and 50 mp. Same goes with all of the video cameras. Everyone is figiting to get up to 12k (FoOR the CroppiNg) but when it's said and done, The average viewer doesnt see the difference, the platforms don't want to handle anything above 4k, and holy shit, the unlimited amount of storage you need for those cameras is just nuts. Invest in lights.
