I teach the difference between the verbs 기억(을) 하다 and 기억(이) 나다, which both mean “to remember.” I also teach when you should use each one. This includes when to avoid using 기억(을) 하다, and which one sounds more natural.

For Polish speakers, i would say 기억하다 is pamiętać (just remember as something you do consciously) and 기억나다 would be przypomnieć sobie (to recall suddenly)

Feeling proud of myself that I reached a level in Korean where I know differences in words and meanings without actively learning them.. Watching lots of Korean content is so helpful, like it's even more useful than learning things from text books.. You can directly listen to how the native speakers use certain words and you just realize how to use them by yourself

Thanks Billy, as a beginner take on this... it seems like 하 means to do it to actually make an effort. And 나다, while this means to occur... it seems to remind me of the Spanish "nada"- nothing, as it no effort to remember. I know its a stretch but, if it helps others to remember... I thought I'd mention it.

Those sort of "dumb" ways of remembering things are sometimes the best ways.

Your videos are always so good and educational for us Korean language learners. Thanks for visiting my broadcast last night. Kind of shocked to see your name pop up in the chat window. Thanks for the 'cheer-up' ... 1 year and going. Up to you if you want to let your viewers know about me.

ahhh this is so helpful. i’ve never actually thought about any specific difference between the two so it’s enlightening to learn things like this. so if i understand correctly 기억하다 is to actively remember something, to recall it. you’re actively calling something to mind. 기억나다 is when a memory comes to you without any specific intent to remember it, perhaps even being a sudden occurrence. this reminds me of something i wondered for a while but i sort of forgot about until now. i remember seeing the word 기억내다 used in some contexts but i never really understood the difference between 기억내다 and 기억나다? i’ve tried googling it in the past but nothing really explained it clearly. honestly i ended up falsely coming to the conclusion that 기억내다 has the same meaning of 기억하다. if someone could explain the meaning of it i would be very appreciative!!

There isn't such verb, but you may have misheard 기억해 내다 (기억하다 + a different ending 내다).

I didn't learn anything new here, but I am curious about whether the following would be equivalent: 기억나게 만들다 기억하게 만들다 I guess based on the explanation in the video, there might be a slight difference in the nuance (one would cause the person to remember on their own, the other would be to make them _try_ to remember)? Are they both valid?

what do you do at the very beginning when learning a language? I feel like I know what to do later in a language, but the beginning feels really hard😅

For a minute I misinterpreted 기억나다 as 기억 + 나*오*다 instead of 기억 + 나다 but I guess it still works. As in, the memory just came out of nowhere. It escaped from the back of my mind and now it's suddenly present in my conscience.

do you use the autofocus mode of your lumix g85???? or u use the manual focus??
@GoBillyKorean

G85 has no autofocus mode :-P Kidding, but I don't use the G85 anymore for these videos. When I did, I'd use press-to-focus mode for most videos, or autofocus only when I could constantly check the screen while vlogging.
