If your dog gets separation anxiety, here's a quick tip (as with all things, it takes time and can take a lot of time). Don't always go through the exact same routine when you are about to leave the house, for example, put your coat on first, and then return to the couch. Then get out, but return within 10s and ignore the dog. Keep repeating that and changing the routine and slowly build up the time you are gone (1 min, 3 min, 5 min and so on, just what makes you comfortable). The dog just learns to understand that being alone isn't forever. Eventually he doesn't mind you getting out and probably won't even come off his place to check on you when you're leaving. It can take a lot of time, but in the end it's all worth it!

That's what Victoria Stillwell promotes. I use to watch her show It's Me or the Dog as a kid and now full episodes are officially being uploaded to KZbin over a decade later. I've never had a dog with that kind of separation anxiety, though, so I've never put it to practice.

My dog learned that if my keys makes noise, someone is leaving, then he goes by the closet in my front door where my shoes are and whine, and I have to take him out the back door so he can pee/poop before I leave, but when we go back in, all is good. I don't know, maybe he thinks we already went out, so its ok for me to leave? he goes back to his toys or bed. Who knows what he thinks. lol

There are some that need more stimulation than others though in my opinion, but yeah totally possible with pretty much any dog. Gotte be able to buy those expensive dog toys!

I created a hardwood flooring business and brought Hunter with me… I was able to train him 5-6 times a day as the owner / boss. I was 20 and broke as sh*t, but insanely ambitious at the time. I started with waiting tables so I could have him before lunch shift, before dinner shift… after dinner and pre - post break fast. I was all in on my dog at the time. He was ultra fit and ripped and also my service animal emotionally.

One thing I've always been curious about, is how does it work from the point of view of access to peoples houses? Do people leave their dogs in a specified location that you have access to, or do people just drop a key off in the morning before they go to work or whatever?

My dogs use a litter box, made of a plastic concrete mixing tub. It's very tidy. Even, my Great Pyrenees could keep it, all, in the box. It does take more time, initially, compared to running them outside, to the grass. My pup is, almost, 15 weeks. She broke off from play, to run to the box, (on her own), and poop, for the first time, today. I am so proud, of her.

“Dogs live 10+ years, you should get a cat” as if those little monsters don’t live 20 years. (I say monster affectionately, I own two and love them very much). Also my cats hate when I’m at work, and are all over me when I get home. I literally hate this whole “cats hate humans and don’t care” socialize your cats, and they’ll be good. They just bond with their owners and that’s it. Anyway, off of cats, i feel like any dog can work around your schedule, just train them accordingly.

I'm active duty military so I work more than 40 hours a week and I have 3 dobermans. I got 2 8 week old littermates (they're 4.5 years old now) and recently got another 4 month old. All 3 are great, don't destroy anything, don't potty on the floor. They're the absolute best dogs in the world.

We've had two female dobermans over the course of 22 years. Our first was 9 months old when we acquired her and my wife and I were both working full time. We did experience some destruction, like the 12" diameter hole through the center of our couch and then there was my wife's favorite high heel shoes which we only found one heel only. Unrolling toilet rolls was so much fun! We learned to modify the house slightly and restrict the dog from certain areas when we were not home, leaving a talk radio station on to keep her company. It took about 6 months until her destructive phase ended and she matured into the most amazing family member. Their only problem is their intelligence and the need to learn and discover. After another year my wife was home when we started a family. For our two children that followed, our Doberman was companion, protector and playmate until she passed at age 13. For our second Doberman, which we acquired as a 10 week puppy, there was always a house full of activity and discovery so she skipped that destructive stage. The doberman's intelligence and maturity blossoms at about age four and will amaze you.

Most people who own high drive Velcro dogs such as Dobies and GSD have to work for a living. The dogs are fine. It’s how you approach leaving them. My GSD was crated when I left home for the first year of her life. My dog is nearly two and is fine at home while I’m away. I just make sure that my house is dog proofed. My Shepherd is a sweetie. I make sure that I take her to the park when I get home.

I think the problem is, dobermans are such an awesome and amazing breed that owners start thinking they’re special just for having one and not just anyone is worthy. I must admit, when I was a young Doberman owner I was also a little guilty of this. When I’d tell people I had Dobermans and they weren’t impressed I’d be baffled. People on the forums should be more encouraging. They were a new Doberman owner once and had to go buy or rescue theirs just like anybody else. I hear a lot of people say”certain breeds aren’t for unexperienced owners”. Well how else do you get experience?

A adult Doberman can easily stay alone a working day, especially when you have two of them, in the morning I power them out one hour. When I come back from work. I go another hour. When you sleep at night, nobody make a break and go outside after four hours with his Dog if not necessary, why should it be different by day? Older Doberman sleep nearly 20 hours a day. I agree with all your saying. Dobermans will adapt to your schedule. They are not some mystery dog that will have a breakdown if you go to work. My dog is with me when I'm off and sleeps with my other dogs in an outside pin when it's time to go to bed. All I have to say is bed time and he runs to the pin and waits on me. Invest time and love in a Doberman and they will be a great dog.

i really needed to hear this even as a 16 year old who doesn't even work. I know for sure that i want a dobie when i move out but i've always been put off by the fact that I wouldn't be able to stay home all day to look after it and it discouraged me to get my hopes of owning such an intelligent dog. All anyone wants is for their pet to be as happy as possible. So glad to hear it! It's TOTALLY doable but that first year as a puppy can be ROUGH and you will need help during the day checking on the puppy on your work days. Spend some serious time planning it out and you can find a way of your certain that's what you want. Two dogs can be good to help the dog with entertainment when they're older. But two dogs is twice the work for you! Maybe consider a second when the Dobie is past the puppy stages and is more of a trusted adult dog.

I just got a Doberman pup! I work full time but I take him to work with me for now. Once he is six months old he can stay home with my other dog who is a vizsla. The vizsla is 1.5 years old and my Doberman is now 12 weeks these two are so fun to watch play together! Best buds!! They can keep each other company. At least that’s my plan.

I work full- time. Each one of my shifts is 24 hours long but I am SO fortunate to work in the same town I live in, so I am allowed to come home multiple times a day to take care of my Doberwoman. I am also thankful to have a dog walker who is also my neighbor! Even at 8, she is not the type of dog who can be left free to roam the house when I am not home. She has her own room attached to the mud room with a window to look outside and a gate so she can look into the rest of the house. I found her a “den” called Hound House on Amazon which is an elevated, enclosed house with her blankets inside. She is free to play, stretch and move around which makes me feel so much better than crating. Safe toys and water complete her set up and keep her AND the house safe. 😂 Proper dog ownership is expensive (quality raw food and pet health insurance being the most costly for me). Working full-time is the only way I can take care of my Doberman the way I think all dogs should be.

I don't own a Doberman but I do have a little Blue Heeler mix puppy (also intelligent and high energy), and I have been working full time since the day I brought her home! We spent a lot of time working on crate training and getting her comfortable being alone in her crate during the day, and she still loves us unconditionally. It's just important that you spend valuable time with them between work

Mine just sleeps when I’m gone. I’ll leave the tv on with a timer if I run out somewhere for a few hours or go to work. She just lays down and sleeps. A throw blanket with your scent on it helps as well. I usually leave it on the couch for her and she will just curl up with it. Just always make time for them when you’re off and have free time. Most of all, dobermans NEED a roll. If you want them to guard, train them to do so with positive reinforcement. If their roll is to be loving and playful, train them to be that way. They are so intelligent and loyal. They love endlessly. I love mine so much. She’s the sweetest girl.

Thank you so much for this video!! And all your videos really. I’ve been wanting a Doberman for years now. My husband and I are getting one in May.. he works 5 8’s and I work 2-3 12 hour shifts a week. The dog will be alone for 8 hours 1-3 days a week depending on our work schedules, but I’ve seen so many people say not to own a Dobie if you work full time. This has given me confidence that we will still be able to manage our pup on the days we both work.

I have the wonderful benefit of working as a machinist in a small shop. Lots of people bring their dogs to work with them (we had German Shepherds, Bull Mastiffs, Labradors, and Dachshund do fine here). Only catch is in puppy hood the dog have accidents on the floor and having to clean up on a regular basis so the shop floor doesn't become the dog's favorite spot. :/

I have a 4 year old fixed female that I have had since 12 weeks old and going on 2 years with an intact 6 year old male that i took in because of a poor living quality he had as a service dog.... I was apprehensive sure. FYI these 2 are cousins from the same breeder and yes I have kids in the house and live in the city. OMG anyone that says this HAS ZERO CLUE! I work fulltime and my dogs sleep with my daughter and they guard the house when we leave (wait) But much more excited when we get back from work and school. They just want love and hugs:) Dobes are the gentlest of all and they LOVE YOU unconditionally always! It can be done. The are by nature protective (never taught) So god forbid you ring the door bell. Just my input. The best of best

I don't have a dog door and my 1 year old is fine for up to 8-9 hours without peeing. I can tell because I get a solid 8 hours of sleep every night and he doesn't leave any mess!

That's great! So glad it's working out for you. Yeah at night it's usually easier for them to hold their bladder. They aren't taking drinks during the night and we all get naturally a little dehydrated overnight. During the day MIGHT be tougher. Or not. Sounds like you know your dog and have things figured out-awesome!

Your videos have been extremely good for me. I'm thinking of getting a Doberman for myself. I've been looking at Hand Me Down Dobe's. They have a male, 2 yrs 9 mon. & a female 4 yrs. He has cropped ears, she doesn't. I don't have the time to train a puppy, I'm single and would love to have a Doberman. I think they are beautiful, intelligent dogs. The loyalty is amazing. fully agree and you now have a new subscriber. My 1st Dob was almost the first minute I had a place of my own with a yard. I was in my early 20's single (I'm in my late 50's now), and it was the best decision I have ever made. She was absolutely perfect, was then and will always be the most precious and closest to my heart (do not tell my wife, but I think she knows). There just is now way when your in your 20' 30's or even later in life and still be able to afford a roof over your dogs head where you can be home 24/7/365. Fortunately now my wife is able to be home 24/7/365, and has been able to do this for the past 10 years. But certainly you can own a Doberman and have this dog grow to be very stable, calm, and loving

Oh my GOSH your video is spot on! I feel so sorry for those folks who were looking to add a dove but the elitists told them NO, you work FT = you’d be a bad owner. That’s SO wrong, and almost cruel to those people who did want a done family member. I’ve had the pleasure and the good fortune to have three (3) dobes in my lifetime, ALL while me and hubby worked FT, and they were happy and fine. People can always hire a pet sitter (or a responsible neighborhood kid like you did), or fam to let them out, it works when they are young. We always always always practiced taking the done for a couple mile walks daily (weather permitting) because our dobes needed that. If they didn’t get the walk, their energy level was much higher, so the walks are important. Great video!

Definitely agree with you! I took a week of PTO when picked my bull terrier pup to try to get him use to his pen area and to help push forward house training. Now every though he’s 5 years old I still come home at lunch to take him outside and play a little. I think your idea of playing with him and tiring him out before work is a key idea! Granted I don’t have a dobe, my dog will sleep allllll day long and not even want to go out at lunch time if he’s super tired. He just wants to sleep on the couch.

And just to add to my success - like he said, lots of toys. But I also found that having not just lots of toys but different types, different materials and textures. My dog has never chewed anything up besides his toys and I think it’s partially because he always had many different types of things to chew on

Working full time was pretty hard when my beautiful dobie was a puppy specially cause i live in an apartment with no yard.....but she all grown up now,she is 2 years old an elegant young lady.all i had to do was to give her a 20minute play with her ball before i got to work and an hour fast walk when i return.she is happy and cute as i dreamed my dobie would be.......

So glad Natan! Just make sure you put a little extra effort into breaking up the day when they're young (under 1 year of age usually). After they grow up and can be trusted 8 hours is no problem. My Dobie stayed home 12+ hours many times and was totally fine. That's after he was a well-trusted adult of course.

A prison trained mine. I was stay at home mom, I can't even go out side even go out the door with her looking at me, she starts crying. When I leave her Just for a Lil while she's mad at me. She never has gotten on the bed or anything. I love her dearly!!!!

So I tried a lot of things here. 1st he was in puppy daycare until he was about 10 months old. At the same time I tried to use a larger pet gate to keep him in the kitchen. Quickly learned he can jump really really high. I then worked on crate training. I have a dog walker who comes to see him mid day (who he also loves). Until he was a year and a half he was still chewing weird things but we quickly discovered toys that he loves. I gradually taught him to stay out of the crate alone with cool puzzle toys. He learned independence and now at three years old he's on his own in the house. Biggest thing is playing with him, walking him and keeping him entertained. A bored dog will develop separation issues etc.

I've come across this with dogs in general. I've been watching breed documentaries and some have said "They're not apartment dogs. They need exercise... They can't be left home alone all day... " as if living in an apartment means you'll never take the dog outside or that you won't be home at all! Rescues also can be unnecessarily picky. "Needs a fenced-in yard... Can't be left outside... Can't be left alone all day..." 🙄 It's like because I live in apartment, I'm not worthy of a dog, especially a large dog. I'm home 95% of the time even as a student (I have no social life whatsoever) and thus have lots of time to take the dog outside to play and exercise. Dogs have their own personalities and preferences, too.

That's my most hated argument of all. My mom has a larger house, and you know how many rooms her dog really uses in there? Two. Living room and kitchen, that's all the space she occupies. So I'll say my apartment is just fine for mine. A garden makes things easier when you quickly need to let them out in the morning, she can just open her door, I have to get fully dressed and ride down the elevator, but other than that, a garden has no benefits for a dog. As long as they get outside enough they don't need a lot of space inside.

My dobie is 7 months and adapted just fine. I was a bit nervous. The first week of going to work he was 8 weeks old. He yelped as I was walking out of the house, getting into my car in the garage. But before I could get out of my neighborhood he stopped crying. I listened on my security camera. I’m fortunate to work near home so I would come home on my lunch break. He will still destroy the house at this age, so he must be in the crate when we’re gone. He is quite demanding and requires much more attention then the typical dog. They are truly velcro dogs. But you can definitely own one and work full time. But if you have two or more jobs then it would probably be best to own a another breed or none at all. Thank you for your video. I do have my own thoughts about having a doberman while I also have to go to uni and part time work, since many said it won't be good for the doby to be left alone at home for around 6 to 8 hours everyday (specially when I'll be moving into an apartment). Thank you very much for the tips, great video and very helpful. I am getting a Doberman puppy soon, and I made arrangements to work from home for 2/3 days out of the week. Those are the days I was concerned about leaving my puppy home alone for. The other 4/5 days per week, I'll be home to give him all the attention he needs! Thankfully, I do my work is relatively close so I'll definitely drop by and let him out during my lunch breaks.

I had a bog red European Doberman and being a doctor worked a lot but spent my free time with him. He was a great dog which I loved extremely. My son learned to walk hanging on his ears. He learned to open doors and etc just watch my son as he learned.

I have had five Dobermans' over the past forty years all were puppies when I got them and I never had a major problem, but I did have someone who would check on them for the first year while at work. They are high energy, quick to learn and love to please, so they do require attention. One thing to know is that they are not an outdoor yard dog. I personally feel my dog is not only a companion, but a family member not something to be exiled, or chained in the yard. I'm a bit off the topic, but it's just my $0.02 on Doberman ownership.

Vet bills are expensive. There's also monthly maintenance for heart worm, fleas, etc. Not to mention emergencies like when my dog bit a bee and the bee bit him instead, so his nose area got swolen and I have to get him into the Emergency Room (for dogs of course! LOL)

We bought a pen/cage for our Yorkie to keep her contained at night and housebreak her. I felt horrible putting her in there every night/day when we left for work but now she’s about 11 years old and when you move it to vacuum she gets so nervous lol. She loves that thing and she won’t sleep anywhere else! When she gets scared she always runs to her little crate. It’s her security blanket.

My doberman and I are together 24/7. The longest that we have ever been separated is 6 hours...and I suffered very much the entire time from separation anxiety.
