Mine has just started to mark its territory. Seal on order. Thanks for the tip! An old HD mechanic told me he uses a wrap of electrical tape on the splines. Also, good tip on the 9/16ths socket too.

Excellent refresher. I had been taught this year's ago. But with age, I forgot it. Thank you very much.

Hi, I have a question and perhaps you might've ran into this at some point and can help me out. I cannot seem to be able to stop the shifter shaft bearing from leaking. I replaced it 2 times already with a new one each time using scotch tape on the grooves to prevent them from splitting my seal. The 'original' one was stuck in place with silicone and there are a few scratches on the teflon tube inside the primary cover and a few on the case itself where the seal seats. The first one I replace leaked straight away. The second time around I put silicone around it where it sits against the case and it was oil tight for at least 1000 miles now it started leaking again. I am running out of patience and ideas so any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

first you did not tell model, year, mileage...more info the better for anyone to chime in and help. The older the model and storage outside I have owner check the breather tube coming from the transmission. wasp love making a home in this and plug it so the Transmission and primary can't breath....hence the pressure blowing out oil. Depending on mileage, shifter bushing worn out and the seal cant hold the shaft in place....Doc

@@LowCountryHarleyDavidson Hi doc thanks for the info. It's a Sportster Nightster 2008 about 35.000 miles it is stored outside 80% of the time, except winter. I am not sure where that breather tube is located on a sportster. Thanks.

So what is "Low Country Harley-Davidson's" take on the transmission fluid transferring to the primary on M8's?
@LowCountryHarleyDavidson6 жыл бұрын
Earl, that's a great question. I'm sure you've done research on the internet to see what other information is out there. I've looked into our service history, and here are the hard #s. In over a year of selling and servicing the Milwaukee 8 motors, there are only 2 vehicles that came in with fluid transfer. Both vehicles came in after extended Interstate riding (i.e. several thousand miles at higher RPMs). Both had higher levels of fluid in the Primary case from the vent design on the transmission. Fluid levels were adjusted properly and the both vehicles were reinspected after 500 miles of riding with no additional transfer of fluid through the venting design. In both cases the operators were using identical fluid (Formula Plus or Syn 3) in both cases, so there was no fluid contamination. The only advise our dealership can give is to periodically check the fluid level on the transmission side if you aren't certain, and run the proper fluid in both cases. We've received no explanation from engineering as to why some transmissions may seem to pressurize more during extended riding conditions. I hope that information is helpful.

I cut up a 2L plastic pop bottle to use as a sleeve. Just a different choice. As usual, Doc is dead right.

My 2021 Tri Glide with just over 4000 miles just got out of the shop last week 4.22.2022 with a shift shaft seal leak. Personally I think HD has poor quality control when making these machines. Their testing is also low quality.

I am sorry you had this issue. I do not agree with your statement of low Quality testing....Doc
