A friend of mine works as a nurse, and told me a story of how a patient she treated had severe liver cancer and was pregnant. She didn’t take chemo because she didn’t want to hurt the baby. Thankfully after her baby was born she began a rigorous treatment and entered remission. I wish all cases happened like that

Thats the closest one can get to a good situation all around. Mother lived long enough to deliver, child came out unharmed, and then the mother was able to be healthy enough to ungo chemo, which itself is a draining treatment to go through.

It is always depending on the type of cancer, the stage of the cancer and several other factors. This woman was already in stage 4 when she got pregnant. Even with treatment, the chance to heal is limited.

Its always confusing how the husband in these case scenarios is made out to be the villain but here he genuinely has a point. All he wants is for his wife to be healthy, thus providing a healthy environment for their baby. That is not taking advantage, that is a man who cares.

When you carry a baby/foetus inside your body for months and everything you do is to make sure it's healthy and not being harmed, what you eat, what your wear, how you sleep, everything, you will make different judgments than a guy, even if he loves you and the baby. She has terminal cancer and she will die. The only way to make sense of this is to keep the baby healthy so it can live. Manning meant the husband is taking advantage of the wife being in a coma so he can go against her wishes. Cannot stand Manning though 🙂

Well he WAS the villain here. How would you feel if your husband told you "I don't respect your opinion, I think you're just talking like this because of a brain tumor. I want to disregard your wishes and do what I think is right"? She was clear before the brain tumor that she didn't want any intervention that could hurt the fetus. She was sticking to that same thought process, nothing had changed. He decided he could use the brain tumor as an excuse to push his agenda instead. We understand why he did it of course, he loves his wife and he doesn't want to lose her, but the way he went about it was scummy. He's not a bad person, but he was the villain here hands down.

@@ovinedreamer1451 do you not think he was distraught and also not thinkong straight he was terrified of loosing the love of his life, he ended up sticking to what she wanted, that doesn't make him a villian it just makes him human, when emotions are involved your own brain tries different ways to cope, his in the terror of his wife going to die his brain made him think thar her thought process was affected by the tuma so then she coild be saved as she was not thinking like herself, the brain works in so many ways that are hard to understand. Hence why so many people who have been abused often think it is their fault that they mau have brought it on themselves by doing something or trusting someone going somewhere private with someone etc sometimes the brain makes you think things that are not true to make you cope not sure what word to use, as someone who has had my drink spiked and lost track of everything waking up in a room with others, I blamed myself for letting anyone else get me drinks even though they were meant to be my friends friends I felt it was my fault bexause I had lightly flirted with one of them and let them pass me my drinks, if I had always opened my own drinks if I had kept more to myself then I wouldn't have had my drink spiked, I know some part of ne knows it wasn't my fault I still blamed myself so never talked about it, I know the video clip is entirely different but the way the brain sees things is sorta the same.

When I was pregnant I took every precaution but my husband and I both agreed that if at any point my life was in danger, save my life, it sound horrible and selfish but there’s always another chance for another baby, my life only has one chance.

Not horrible nor selfish. It's normal. Some women wish to protect the child alone like they show in movie. That's not wrong either. In these situations nothing's right or wrong. It's a wish. In your case, I am happy you chose yourself. The Gods will send the same soul to you again a second time because the children and mother are decided by fate. If that kid was meant to be your child, then it can only be your child.

You made the most sound, rational decision it's possible to make in my opinion. This is especially true if the couple already have children. Which do you think is going to be harder on your husband and your children--loosing an unborn child/sibling or losing their wife/mother. It is just selfish to prioritize the baby's life over than of the mother. In the absolute best situation, you're leaving your husband in the position of being the sole caregiver AND provider for the child. In the worst case, the father is now the sole caregiver and provider for multiple children who are now traumatized by the loss of their mother and might resent the new baby for "killing" mom. You have more of an obligation to the living than the unborn child.

Not selfish at all, reasonable. If you die and the baby lives, then it grows up without a mother and placing a hardship on the father because he'd then be raising the child alone in his grief. During my 2nd year of training in Radiotherapy, we treated a pregnant lady. Stomach cancer that had spread to her spinal cord. The cancer symptoms were so similar to early pregnancy symptoms, she wasn’t diagnosed until it was too late. Unfortunately neither her or the baby made it, god bless them ❤👼

This is just an ugly situation altogether. I don't like telling a someone if they should have a baby if they don't want it nor tell someone they shouldn't have a baby if they want it. Usually these set of circumstances don't happen often at the same time, but to get to this point, it just sucks.

I hate how the doctor was so quick to call the husband's power of attorney a breach when it's clear he is only doing what the situation demands without any other options available plus he and his wife agreed to do treatment if the cancer spread too fast as it was so he wasn't in violation at all and trying to save both her and the baby. Unlike other patients and their spouses where the doctors have been right they infringed on their rights or did some questionable things, this husband was genuinely at a loss and had to choose what he believed would try to help even if it had the chance of killing his wife or his baby. He was heartbroken and I can't blame him for what he decided.

Exactly. Especially since nothing they said indicated the surgery would put the baby at a significant risk for injury. Who knows. Surgery obviously wouldn’t have been a cure for the cancer but it could have allowed her the ability to meet her baby and perhaps persue additional treatment options after delivery. Saying no to the surgery seems to guarantee that she’ll only ever be an incubator with no other future after the delivery.

@@TysMommy609 And I noticed that unlike others in the show who seem to prioritize the baby or the mother over the other, this guy isn't choosing either. He's so afraid of the situation that he doesn't know what to do. He neither wants the baby or his wife at risk but making the decision of what is necessary is tearing him. You can genuinely see his panic as he's forced to pick an option he knows she wasn't sure about because he was frightened of losing both. In the other cases, they either want the baby because it's "what she would have wanted" or they want the wife and just go "we can try again later." He doesn't do that which is why I don't like how the doctor was claiming he was like the others. He's just a scared husband caught in a bad situation. His decision is most likely what anyone else would have done.

@@MA-mh1vs The ER works by trying to determine which case is more urgent. Unfortunately, that sometimes means people will wait because it doesn't seem urgent. What is different is that countries with universal healthcare have layers. You don't go to the hospital, you go see a doctor at your clinic. If there is concern for more serious issues, they will refer you. But for most mundane things, they are more than enough. Moreover, there is a limit to how much they would pay.

I had to get tested for cervical cancer at 14 weeks. My dr told me you can do chemo in second and third trimesters. I always thought you had to choose between pregnancy and treatment but you can do both. Obviously there are risks but not as bad as you would think. Fortunantly i was fine 🙂

@@fabianifigueira I can answer the ‘is 37 weeks too early?question. 37 weeks is classed as full term as the baby can breathe on their own outside of the womb. My daughter was 37 weeks and 2 days when I gave birth. While she did have reflux (caused by her digestive system not being quite finished developing when she was born) and was born a little jaundiced, she was perfectly fine to come with me the same day. Generally babies born at 37 weeks are full term and don’t need any additional treatment. Though they might still have the hair their bodies are covered in while in the womb. My daughter had fluffy ears for a few weeks after birth because of this lol

The pregnant woman really wasn't thinking clearly, because if she was, she'd know that her baby had as much chance of being born as she had of surviving cancer without treatment. It's either gamble on birth defects caused by exposure to anesthesia, or gamble on her son's life by dying of cancer. One of those has a small chance of being bad and the other is guaranteed to cost you two lives out of stupidity and stubbornness.

No, because frankly at 21 weeks the baby is already viable. For a woman who has pretty much zero chance of survival, keeping her alive a few more weeks allows for more development. They can even give medication to help the baby's lungs to develop more quickly. This baby absolutely woul survive.

My husband and I are expecting our second. We've had discussions at length about what to do if put in this situation. As heartless as it sounds to the baby, we both agree that my life is more important, and that if there is a situation where we have to pick, I get priority. If I started suddenly saying that I want the baby to take priority, my husband would know that I'm not in my right mind and would fight for me to get treatment.

On that situation, she completely disregarded the terrified husband of losing both his wife and the potential baby. The mother's feeling won't matter after she's dead or in a coma state. What will matter is the father coping and accepting fate.

@@zilesis1 except this doesnt account for the high risk of infection, the fact she can't feed herself, regulate her temperature, her organs will start to deteriorate, her hormones will spiral, the clotting issues, the fact they can't regulate the respinse the meds will have to the baby. So yes, she will die because your brain is responsible for every function in your body and if it goes, the baby, even with a ventilator is no guarentee

Also, and it's an easy mistake to make, but it was 'serotic' not 'cirrhotic' - 'serotic' just means there's cellular fluid in the abdomen, which is probably something they've dealt with before since they knew she had cancer already. Unfortunately the two are pronounced nearly identically!

I had an aunt who died before I was born, during WWII. She had Hodgkins disease, and was pregnant. She didn't get all the drugs, to protect the baby. My cousin was born, and his mom died about two months later. Her husband was here, but in the Army. His wife being dead, he was sent overseas and died in the Battle of the Bulge. So my cousin was an orphan when less than a year old.

The problem is that supposedly the baby only has a low chance of developing complications during the surgery. Low chance of killing the baby vs near guaranteed chances that she never wakes up.

I mean it doesn't get any more of an impossible choice than this. For one choice is a dying wife and a dead baby, and the other choice is a living baby but a dead wife. Do you choose to save the love of your life knowing she's not going to be around for very long or do you choose to save the life the two of you created?

I was in the hospital 8 months pregnant trying not to have surgery because my gallbladder was infected. After 2 weeks of antibiotics and round the clock blood work and care my gallbladder started to leak poison into my bloodstream. One morning after blood work had been done 2 surgeons busted into my room. It was literally 6am and I couldn’t keep nothing down. They said I was dying and that by that afternoon both the baby and I would be dead if I didn’t consent to surgery. They explained all the precautions they would take and all the teams that would be in there to assure our safety. I said yes and went through with it. So I had major abdominal surgery at the end of my pregnancy. Whenever pregnant you can’t have the less evasive version. I had to have the good old fashioned scalpel and wedge. I woke up with a long drain tube and bulb sticking out my side and I spent 2 more weeks in hospital recovering from infection in my bloodstream and a wonderful liquid diet. Having staples across your stomach whenever your baby moves and kicks isn’t fun but worth it if it means we lived.

Why didn't they deliver the baby when you were already 8 months. Babies much younger survive. Unless this was decades ago, that's strange to me (especially since they've been removing gallbladder laproscopally for a long time).

@@annebodeeif a baby is born early there is a high chance that they are not fully developed. Babies who are born months early often have to spend time in the NICU. They just wanted to give the baby a best chance a living a healthy life

I have seen so many Clips of this show no and Dr. Manning is just the worst, no empathy whatsoever towards the husband who had to make an impossibly painful choice who clearly wasn't acting maliciously or selfishly but just trying to keep his wife alive. She is so quick to judgement in so many instances it´s really ofputting, but seems to be the case with many of the cast like the young black nurse as well.

There is no villain. This is grief talking through him. He loves his wife. In some way he loves the baby too, but a man is disconnected from the baby until birth, unlike the mother who feels the child everyday inside of her. His thoughts, wants, needs are not the same as his wife. Her first thought is to protect her child, an instinct that is natural once you become pregnant. Maybe that is lack of reasoning on her part, to protect someone she has never met over the her husband. This must be so emotionally difficult and there is no villain, there is no selfishness, both feel very different things. There is no right or wrong here. If anyone is ever in this situation, i suggest a documented letter, so spouse has to make this decision.

this is the second time i saw a pregnant woman with cancer on tv. the first woman was on a show called Call The Midwives; she came in the clinic for a check up and a midwife saw she was bleeding and feeling uncomfortable so the doctor took a test to see what she had. Eventually, they told her that she had cervical cancer and needed a hysterectomy in order to prevent the cancer from spreading. At first she didn’t want the operation but she eventually had the surgery and though she’s heartbroken, her husband, who didn’t know about it until much later in the episode, forgave her.

I died for 13 minutes 2week after open heart surgery, needed a second Emergency OHS, was in a coma after and my advanced directive was 100% ignored they refused to even speak to my husband/decision maker. I should have sued.

My mom friend found out she had stage 2 breast cancer and she was 3 months along in her pregnancy. She chose not to do treatment and continue the pregnancy. She and her son didn't make it. She left a 2 yr old daughter behind who ended up in foster care. Found out she is in rehab at the moment for drug addiction. I don't know what i would have done in her position but i would have taken her daughter wellbeing in to consideration. Such a tough issue. 😪

IKR I have epilepsy myself and when i get seizures my parents ask me questions to try to see how aware i am, and let me try to answer, but if i cant they tell me. I understand they were in a rushed situation, but sometimes you have to try and give the patient a minute or so to process if you want to know how bad the seizure is.

In her case the chances of the cancer going into remission is pretty low around 17%, which pretty much means she wouldn’t have much time either way. Maybe if the cancer was diagnosed earlier, but even then typically it’s discovered at stage 3 cancer, which also has a low rate of survival. Ultimately even with the surgery she would only live a extra couple months not enough for a full pregnancy.

If the wife survived and lost the baby, she'd never forgive the husband. Then likely, she'd die of the cancer anyway. If he honours her wishes, he has to raise a baby on his own, while grieving the loss of his wife, and the child will never know its mother. She was going to die from the cancer anyway, so it was more a case of "abort the baby and live a few months longer" or "have the baby and die earlier". To me to choice would be clear. I’m 27 and have stage 4 cancer and recently I had a pregnancy scare and I honestly never considered stopping treatment to save the fetus. Like to be fair, it wasn’t with a long term partner and I didn’t want a child at the moment anyway, but if I was in fact pregnant and I wasn’t on cancer treatment I would have kept it. I just wasn’t going to risk stopping treatment and killing us both. Luckily I never had to make the decision because it turns out it was a false alarm. Damn hormones that get affected by pregnancy also get affected by cancer and chemo. 🙃

Honestly, I'm on the husband's side here. Now I'm not a parent, so sure you can say i don't know what it's like, but still, i can't understand letting yourself die to save a child who hasn't even been born yet. I mean, regardless of anything, that child will have to grow up without a parent. Their surviving parent will always carry the pain of a lost loved one, which could inadvertently cause coldness or distance between them and the child. The child may learn to blame themself for their parents' death. So many, many things. I say get the Cancer treated and go adopt a kid if it leaves you infertile or get a surrogate. You can still be a mother. Don't throw your life away.

That can’t be safe for a baby one way or the other. Even refusing treatment, so it don’t hurt the baby. The cancer itself can have an effect on the baby and put more stress on the child. Mom gets an infection, baby suffers. I’m normally pro life but in some situation when medically necessary it’s okay or should be to terminate a pregnancy. She could of gotten pregnant after she recovered from cancer treatment. Patients recovering from cancer are said to have to usually wait around a year after treatment ends before getting pregnant and having kids (my fiancé had lymphoma). Overall it’s not fair to the father cause he’ll have it all dumped on him after she dies if she even makes it to delivery the baby in time. I know it’s just a show but that’s what reality is

RN, 75, worked til 72. In early 1980’s young woman, 23-24, came to the clinic with swollen nodes in her abdomen, she was 6 months pregnant. At 16 she had melanoma & told not to get pregnant. She married and they wanted kids. Probably thought after 7-8 years it was ok. Nodes were malignant. No treatment. They took the baby at about 8 months. She went home, had 3 weeks with husband & newborn & died. Think of the 3 of them often. Wonder how the husband coped and hope the baby grew up loved & wanted & having a good life.

Personally, (and this is just my option so please nobody take offense) I feel that if a child is unborn and the mother’s life is in danger, the mother should be saved. The mother has family and friends who know her and love her. I just feel that a mother shouldn’t lose her life trying to produce a new one. Losing a baby is equally as tough and heartbreaking though. So this is just a horrible situation to be in, it’s sad to think there’s cases like this. Pray for miracles where both mother and baby can live. ❤

I can understand both povs. Personally, had that been me I also wouldve wanted my baby to be saved. But IRL, i already have 4 children who depend on me and need me to be alive for them. So if it happened to me today, right now, my life would take top priority over the unborn baby. Or rather, my living, breathing children would take top priority. There are no easy answers or decisions in cases like this. It all comes down to the fact that each situation is different and therefore requires different thought processes and decisions.
