My tinnitus is severe and have had it for about eight years. It is a constant high-pitched ringing that never stops and is louder than the environment around me. I have spikes that last up to a week, sometimes longer, and it sounds like an air raid siren going off in my head. I told my doctor and pastor that I couldn't take it anymore and I didn't want to be around any longer. I started doing sound therapy when I found your channel and downloaded a tinnitus app. It has helped a little. I have to put my phone next to my pillow every night and listen to crickets and cicadas all night just to sleep. Right now I am dealing with a spike that has lasted seven days so far. I am watching football and I hear this ringing over the TV. It is so loud it is almost agonizing. I would be able to cope better if these spikes weren't so bad and would not last so long.

How I understand you like no one else. I’m from Ukraine. I’ve had a piercing ringing for 8 months, after removing the wax plug. I’m quietly going crazy. Even sound therapy doesn’t block it. I can’t stand it for as long as you’ve been for 8 years. I already have I have no strength. And besides, the war in our country does not allow me to go to the clinic.
@garrison10461Ай бұрын
@Олексій-н6г I'm so sorry for what your country is going through. I downloaded a tinnitus relief app and bought a pair of noise-canceling headphones and started doing the habituation sound therapy on my own. I don't see a doctor for this, I was already seeing a doctor for something else and I have let her know what is going on. I pray and spend time with God to help me cope. I pray that you can find some sort of relief.
@Олексій-н6гАй бұрын
Thank you for your feedback. I’m also wearing a sound therapy earphone, but at half the volume it doesn’t cover the ringing at all, it’s very strong, but at least there’s some relief, in terms of at least a little bit. May God bless you and everyone you love .@@garrison10461

I really never understood the validity of a hearing test when you have raging tinnitus in your head, I can take a hearing test one day when my tinnitus is going crazy and then take it on another day and get two different scores. I've had tinnitus for 20 years so I guess my hearing has been bad the whole time but never changed. My tinnitus is completely governed by the weather. I think they have a long way to go to really understanding tinnitus.
@treblehealthАй бұрын
If the audiologist uses something called warble tones, then the test is 100% accurate even if you have loud tinnitus.
@jonathansantos9876Ай бұрын
One of the big challenges (as en Epidemiologist) facing audiologists in ruling in / ruling out tinnitus is what we would call screening bias. The traditional hearing test measures tones from the range of 150 hz up to 8000 khz. It is a good test to ruling *IN* hearing loss. Its design and purpose is not meant as a screening tool for surveillance purposes; rather - it is designed so that an audiologist can determine where the hearing loss occurs (IN THIS RANGE) so that treatment can be provided; often in the form of hearing aids or other devices. The test, however, is very poor at ruling *OUT* hearing loss. It doesn't encompass the entire hearing spectrum (20 - 20,000); so an individual whom might have been able to hear up to 18,000 khz one day, and then suddenly looses that ability to only hear up to 11,000 khz would *NOT* be detected on an audiogram. An advanced hearing test (one that is often designed for children) would need to be conducted to measure hearing loss in this spectrum; and it is not often done conducted by audiologists *unless requested so by either the patient or physician*. This can lead to frustrating interactions, where an individual is experiencing a very real loss in hearing perception; but the tool used to measure that perception isn't able to provide the medical practitioner the answers they should be using to measure said loss. Perhaps a great example would be similar to an eye test. It would be like being able to read up to the 5th line down - and the ophthalmologist would tell you "Ok, that's good, you have good vision"; yet a few days ago you were able to read even the tiniest letters on the 8th line. Something is wrong, you know something has changed, but the test cannot rule out some sort of vision loss. Other challenge - hearing loss can often go unnoticed. Hearing tests are not part of a general screening program; you don't get annual hearing tests when you are young unless you might have a pre-existing condition. As a result, epidemiologists don't have a good set of data to work with as to what sort of baseline there is to use. There are often *many* other people out there who have hearing loss; but are not bothered by it (or perhaps do not notice it) and as such - it isn't captured or reported. The true prevalence of hearing loss is often estimated through sampling data, but even that it gets tricky depending on who, how and when you obtain your sample. As for Tinnitus - well that often gets noticed *very* early by the patient, which prompts a visit to an audiologist or ENT - because it is a sudden, disturbing event. It isn't going unnoticed, so people head to their audiologists / ENT's get to screened. Incoming patients are told "you don't have perceptible hearing loss" due to the traditional screening test being used. Ultimately (and what new research is showing based on neurological models) - it's not the function of the ear that creates the sound, but a dysfunction of the auditory system; and sadly without some very sophisticated brain-imaging equipment (ie: a PET scanner) the level and loudness the patient is experiencing isn't captured.

Why the sound of tinitus can change every day ? Constant sound stresses your nervoussystem. Some time ago I read a study which examined pwople living at a highway. You can adapt to it by teaching your consciousness not to recognize it, but this study found, your autonom nervoussystem still reacts on it. (higher blood pressure, less deep sleep,...).

Sound therapy re-routes the neuro-pathways…. With enough sound therapy, it can help the brain to not recognize the sound you hear constantly right now. Try it. I did it and it lasted a while, yes… it came back but I didn’t stick with the therapy long term. My noise has faded and I don’t need it as much,but if it does get loud, I use it to help my brain lower the sound.
@WayBackNowLetsGoАй бұрын
@@sheila7814 I try not to pay attention to it. I have hearing aids with built in sound. That helps if I'm in a quiet environment. A sound machine I use to help fall asleep. Not enough sleep seems to make the sound worse or more noticeable. Learning to cope.

Thanks for the vlog, doctor Henry is indeed most learned about the subject, however, it still remains "a stab in the dark". The majority of sufferers don't need a "shrink" they need real help. It is becoming a multi-million dollar industry, with no significant breakthrough. All this BS about hearing loss being the cause would suggest that ALL deaf people also suffer... which isn't the case.
@treblehealthАй бұрын
Hearing loss by itself isn’t the cause. It’s how the brain malfunctions to the hearing loss. Plus there are other causes besides hearing loss.

The US spends billions, trillions on warfare, space programs (going to Mars and other exploration) to mention a few. For veterans Tinnitus is probably one of the top disabilities. Why they don't fund something like the $500 million that is needed by the Hough Ear Institute NHPN-1010 initiative to make it happen and get FDA approval, also they are working on a regeneration injection too (2 possible treatments). There are so many millions of americans with the condition and anything would help.

Hearing aids do not cause tinnitus to worsen. Fluctuations are normal when you start to use sound therapy consistently. Hearing aids are programmed to your specific prescription (hearing test) so it's important to follow up with your Audiologist to make appropriate adjustments.

I wonder if there will ever be a standard "cure" for tinnitus. I seem to have developed it through a middle ear infection and im on month 3 living with this condition. Im told it may go away and just as likely - stick around forever. Its about a 4 out of 10 but im petrified of quiet spaces and relaxing because it will amplify. Any thoughts?
@treblehealthАй бұрын
It’s understandable to feel anxious about tinnitus, especially in quiet spaces. There’s no standard “cure” yet, but many people find relief through sound therapy, stress management, and working with an audiologist. Since your tinnitus started after an ear infection, there's still a chance it may improve over time. In the meantime, using gentle background noise can help make quiet spaces less overwhelming. We would be happy to discuss further to help you better manage your tinnitus. Schedule a complimentary telehealth consultation: treble.health/consultation
