Even my love and respect for Sam Raimi’s films can’t get me excited for this one. I think I’m genuinely burnt out with the MCU. We’re almost 15-16 years into this machine and at one point I’d be thrilled to see the next Marvel film. Now? I’m just like “eh, whatever”. It’s all just too much now, with all the current films having to fulfill this obligation to feel connected. I just don’t care anymore.

I had a fun time with it, but the issue for me with the current phase with these shows and movies is that they're hiring a bunch of writers with often very little writing credits of varying quality, on top of seemingly hiring talent on the basis of identity quota rather than skill and good ideas. I'm not tired of the MCU. The overall quality has just markedly dropped in the last couple years. Case in point, this movie is the writer's FIRST film. The only other work he's credited with are an episode of Rick & Morty, some show I can't remember which I don't think lasted longer than a season, maybe a short film or two, the Loki series whose hype I honestly don't get at all because I thought the amount of show I saw kinda sucked (and I genuinely wanted to like it), and then this Dr. Strange movie. As far as dumb fun was concerned, I had a reasonably good time that I don't regret having seen it, but there are objectively elements of this plot that you actively have to overlook to justify why it plays out the way it does.

The Raimi-isms were this movie’s bread and butter. I’m a little more invested in this franchise so I found it easier to connect with the film, though I think there are weak elements within it, but I was honestly shocked at how much I enjoyed myself. Out of all the products this franchise has put out, only about a handful stand out to me, and this one is definitely one of them. Maybe it’s because I haven’t seen a lot of Raimi’s work, but I just had a constant smile on my face with the implementations of his style. There was a distinctness (finally) to this film that no other Marvel movie has given me personally.

To me, these MCU Disney-universe films don't feel like films. They’re not even products (products would imply they have a semblance of substance or something to gain from their usage). These movies and tv shows are essentially advertisements for future advertisements masked as films and shows. They’re full of cameos and Easter eggs that trigger the endorphins of viewers who have an emotional connection to these properties and validate their fandom. These corporations don’t care about validating these properties; they’re whoring them out, wringing them dry like a rag of every ounce of comics lore.

I just saw it this afternoon in 3D, which was pretty cool. I actually enjoyed it. It was batsh*t crazy, but it was a fun ride. But one reason it worked for me was I had seen all of the Marvel movies and TV shows it was referencing. However, its primary flaw was that if you haven’t seen all of that, you wouldn’t have the slightest idea what was going on. It has so many prerequisites just to understand the plot (or many plots). If fact, I was even a little thrown off at first simply because I had missed the last three episodes of Elizabeth Olsen’s TV series (Wandavision) which directly set up this movie. Fortunately, I was familiar with the Darkhold from its introduction on “Agents of Shield.” So I was able to figure it out, along with the episodes of Wandavision I had seen. But the movie really does expect that its audience has seen EVERYTHING to be able to follow all the member berries-including Anson Mount reprising his role as Blackbolt, which is really a deep cut, considering how quickly his TV series, “Inhumans,” was canceled on ABC. That was cool for me, but this movie was surety confusing for the uninitiated-which is not typically the mark of a great film as it isn’t conducive to drawing in new fans.

I'm a fan of the MCU films and shows and I've seen all of them. I personally loved the film, and I found Wanda (Scarlet Witch)'s scenes heart-breaking, they touched me. Having lost someone very close to me at a fairly young age, I can identify with her desperately wanting to be with her kids again. I guess I'm putting my own personal experiences on the film, but I found it very moving and I enjoyed the film from beginning to end. It wasn't 100% full-blown Sam Raimi, but there were a lot of Raimi's touches in the film. Disney has actually been great about letting directors use their personal vision in films. Chloe Zhao put her stamp on "The Eternals" film and James Gunn's "Guardians of the Galaxy" films have his unique style. I can see how someone who hasn't seen all the films and shows could get lost and mentally check out of this film, but I love how the MCU is this layered universe with so many characters and locales. It's like one big huge soap opera, where the characters crossover and are all co-existing in the same huge universe.

Yeah definitely, this is all what i wanted to explain and i am glad that you did. I have seen all the MCU and cartoons, seasons on disney plus. When you keep up with it, the stories are awesome with a lot of meaning and has us left wanting more. I love these movies and Spider-Man No Way Home really has me excited to see what Doctor Strange has done and just what happens with the characters next and who in introduced again after a long while and then seeing new characters from the comics and cartoons. This movie just looks awesome to me and l do love Doctor Strange and Scarlette Witch they are very powerful and entertaining to me. And i agree with her about Logan, i love that movie too it was a lol. (Spoiler if no one saw Logan) warning . . I have now idea how they’re going to justify what Wanda has done in this movie. She’s supposed to be an avenger, a morally grey hero who flirts with her villainous side but doesn’t fully embrace it. I love the idea of embracing the evil however i believe they reduced the character to the mad woman syndrome trope. It’s unfortunate and it would have made a lot more sense if we had seen what she had gone through before she turned mad. From what I understood from Wandavision, Wanda was desperate to find her kids but not desperate enough to brutally decimate anyone in her path. I wish it was handled differently and i’m worried about the future of the character.
@TheGeorgeD132 жыл бұрын
The character frequently vacillates between hero and outright villain in the comics. I don't really think they reduced her to the made woman syndrome trope because she still felt human and believable to me. Also, she was heavily corrupted by the darkhold and realizing her effect on others through her children at the end made her snap out of the darkhold's spell. She'll probably go on a redemption arc of some sort where she eventually sacrifices herself to save the world/universe. That's generally how these stories go.

Self-aware, multi-textual, hyper-connected. There has never been anything like this in cinema before. It has happened in television (for example, the Star Trek brand is something like this), but in cinema Marvel is doing it for the first time, and it's interesting. The comic books from which the whole “Wanda has lost her children” thing springs is called ‘Avengers Disassembled’ and it is from the last days of great storytelling by Marvel. The other story that seems to be influencing things, the one with Doctor Strange on trial and all sorts of talk about “incursions” is from a huge Avengers run by Jonathan Hickman and Doctor Strange is not even the baddie there. These stories, so well done in the comics, were just ripped apart and reassembled in a way that barely does them justice. The same was the case with ‘Civil War’ and ‘Age of Ultron.’ These are all stories that could have been given room to breathe. Perhaps make them each a phase of their own. Ah well...

I have to say i feel the MCU is slowly reaching it's "sell by date", it's slowly going the way of GoT and Walking Dead, ofcourse nothing can stay on top forever and i think Phase 4 is a sign now that the MCU has nearly had it's day. Black Widow, Shang-Chi, eternals have all been weak, only No Way Home has been hugely successful. Doctor Strange MOM is okay. But it is all becoming quite formularic now; and what with all the tv shows Disney are churning out means it's becoming saturated. After Thanos, IW and endgame those movies really concluded the MCU perfectly and in my strong opinion they should have taken a nice good five year hiatus from these movies and maybe just focused on telling smaller stories with tv shows. One of the biggest let downs with this movie is the trailer hinted at delving deep into this "Multiverse!" and really open everything up; even the cameos it delivers felt abit wasted. Nothing like how the "Black Panther" and "Spider-Man" were introduced in Civil War. And theres no real connection or set up into the next MCU character's story like we've had before. Some very cool visuals here and Wanda was handled perfectly here considering everything she's been through in the past. the America Chavez character was surprisingly handled really well too cause at first i thought they were going to make her like Rey.

marvel should try just to make the funny dumb action movies that everybody like, when they try to push a specific director with prestige as to validate that this is "Cinema" rather than just popcorn movies is when they fail worst like with Chloe zhao in Eternals because the movie ends being not fun enough or not good enough dramatically somehow end up being none.

Generally I'm the type of person who would be inclined to dis Marvel movies (I take myself a little too seriously, if I find out you haven't seen, say, 8 1/2 or 2001 or On the Waterfront or Gates of Heaven, I'll annoy the heck out of you until you do, I mostly avoid chain restarunts, etc), but I have to say, I've gone into every Marvel franchise thinking "surely this will be lame," and wound up enjoying them all thoroughly. They're well made (if occasionally a little too long), they have likable casts, they're funny, clever, family friendly. And I think by and large they manage to do the near impossible these days, which is appeal to all political persuasions. So there you go, a pro Marvel sentiment to balance the discourse. :)

I love the MCU, but this did not live up to its name for me, although I still liked it. It could’ve been much better though. Do you plan on reviewing EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE? That is by far the better multiverse film: more unique, challenging, fun, and has more intimate but higher emotional stakes imo.

Great review. I agree completely. HOWEVER i was surprised you didn't mention Ramies GORE in this film, as horror is your thing and that was oretty much the only thing they allowed him to do... AND BOY DID HE DO THAT. He brutally murdered a handful of Marvels mist iconic characters. Here is the blood count, Ramie in one single film.... - Killed hundreds if people via Wanda turning HEEL. - Cut Captain Carter in half with her own shield. - impaled and killed one Dr strange version via Wandas monster. - Crushed in Blackboltz head. - shredded Mr fantastic - crushed Captain Marvel under a statue. AND...snapped Professor Charles Xaviers neck! 😆 Wow. I didn't mind...just needs to be noted RAMIE made his own lemonade from lemons by going on a killing spree. Lol. Yes...very underwhelming. 😊🙏

New to the channel. Really agreed with Men and Northman. This feels very pretentious and arrogant. I don't think this is the greatest movie, but this review feels like you just wanted to complain about the MCU.

Yup movie fell so flat for me, was dozing off multiple times. I’ve liked most MCU movies, but this just felt so stale. I’m wondering if the popularity will start wanning soon. Too many movies and shows-keeping up with it is becoming a bit of a nightmare.

Really?? This one was the first one with actual personality and style behind it. Imaginative cinematography, some really good super imposed editing. This one actually felt like it was directed by a filmmaker with actual ideas.

@RF20Lennon I don’t know I think it was mainly the script. The writing and general story were so messy. Humor fell so flat, the story didn’t feel like it had any stakes or any general momentum building towards anything. I also didn’t enjoy Wanda’s character arc, it felt out of left field considering what happened in Wandavision. There just wasn’t any engaging character arcs or development. Also the general idea of the multiverse and the horror element were severely underused. I do like Raimi but it didn’t even feel like his film.

Hey, Movie buff I enjoy watching your content and you give a lot of valid opinions on movies. Is it possible if you can give us your opinion on movies and shows like She-hulk, Batgirl, Ghostbusters, Ocean 8, and the kitchen? I would like a woman's perspective on these woke flicks and if it's good for the industry. Keep up the good work.

I saw this movie last night and I struggled to stay awake! Dull characters and boring action scenes. It also felt very preachy and not enough escapism (which I expect from a superhero movie).

Being more into MCU stuff this was really hit or miss, I didn't like it at all. It was really bland and schlocky in a bad way.
