Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness is going to show Stephen Strange answering for his crimes, endangering the multiverse. And boy, does he have a lot to answer for. When you look at the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, you see that Stephen failed to be the adult in the room. Heck, he was barely a hero. I this video, we tell you why.

Doctor Strange is a pragmatist, he handles things with logic and objectivity.
This is why Stephen was determined to send the multiversal trespassers back to their universes, even if that meant they would all die.
And that’s because their existence threatened reality. While spider-man was willing to put the world at risk just to give these villains a second chance.
But they were in this mess for one reason, because Stephen Strange decided to cast a memory spell. It was meant to be simple and harmless, but it all went wrong.
Reality was almost destroyed, all because Stephen decided to flex his magical muscles.
But Stephen’s wrong-doings in No Way Home go far beyond the butched spell, he made so many bad calls. Choices that not only put reality at risk, but also raise some moral questions about power and the consequences of misusing it.
Doctor Strange was wrong, and we are about to unpack just how wrong he was.
Let’s begin with Doctor Strange’s main misdeed in No Way Home. The memory spell. To be fair, Peter Parker holds a lot of the responsibility here. It was him who asked Stepehn for his help. Peter actually wanted Stephen to use the time stone to rewrite history.
But Stephen was the one that suggested the memory spell. He could have just said “sorry kid” and sent Peter on his way. But instead he decided to brainwash the whole world just to help poor Peter Parker. It was his idea, so he is the main culprit.
Peter is a friendly-neighborhood-spider-man, he has no idea on how magic spells work, or the implication of the Runes of Kof-Kol. Stephen is the expert, he knows first hand that there are consequences to spells. I’m no magic expert, but this spell sounds pretty dangerous.
And for anyone who says that Strange should have just erased the world’s memory of Mysterio framing and revealing Peter’s identity. That’s still wrong.
We are talking about a spell that will affect billions. It won’t just erase their memories, it will rewrite them into something else, something untrue. The world knew about Spider-Man’s identity for weeks, so what happens to all of that span of time?
Strange claims it’s a simple spell for forgetting, but there’s clearly a lot more to it, it’s basically the same as rewriting reality.
What’s ironic is that when Peter asks Strange to use the time stop, Stephen proves how insanely stupid that request is.
Yet 5 seconds later, Strange is just fine with rewriting the memories of countless people, without any consent. This spell is also an extreme violation of privacy and free will. And it’s just to help Peter clear his name and get him and his friends into MIT.
And this isn’t even the first time Strange cast this spell. [clip] We don’t know what happened in the full-moon party Kamar-Taj, but I highly doubt that it warranted a memory wipe.
It’s a careless missuess of power. And you gotta wonder about the moral and ethical implications here. If sourceres can just cast such a spell at any time they want, choosing to erase people’s memory whenever it suits them. That’s pretty much playing god.
And if Strange is willing to wipe the world’s memory for Peter, where is the line?
I mean Strange literally just found an-all-in-one solution for anytime he or other heroes mess up. Instead of facing the consequences for their mistakes, Strange can just wave his hands and poof, everyone forgets.
It’s actually terrifying. People should be able to trust these heros to do the right thing, but both Strange and Spider-Man prove that they will do the very wrong and selfish thing whenever it serves them.
And Doctor Strange holds more power than most, since even something as a seemingly harmless spell can tear reality apart.
And what’s insane here is that there is no one to enforce such spells, because the very people who are supposed to enforce these spells are the ones who perform them.
And look, it’s nice and all that Stepehn is willing to move heavens and Earth just to help Peter, but maybe tune it down a little.
I’m sure there is a spell that would have allowed Strange to expose Quentin Beck’s lies. Like some remembrance spell, a way to review memories like in Harry Potter or something.

When Strange says, "they're here because of you," he didn't mean it was Peter's fault. He simply meant that those villains were coming to this particular universe because this version of Peter is from this universe. The broken spell placed a target on Peter. I bet what happens is that the movie is going to pull a Rick and Morty where Morty thinks he can make save points to go back to but in reality is just going to different universes. Every time Strange Casts spells to benefit his universe, another universe gets the 'shit' end of the deal. He will find out that conservation of energy is a thing. You can't just pull new energy out of nowhere. The movie is about him learning that and realizing he has to find in-universe solutions to problems he had been using other universes for (and maybe even them for). It would definitely be a good setup for conflict down the road where other universes look at our 'perfect' one as basically the 1% where it gets everything it wants by forcing other universes to 'lose' somehow. They end up with worse realities on average. That may be why the first sorcerer supreme in the first movie ( I forget her name) felt comfortable with pulling from the dark dimension..... because at least it wasn't from another universe similar to hers. So they looked down on her for doing so. But she is more savvy as to how things work than Strange. The best evidence is the fact that his spells tear the universe apart always. He can handle little tears. But if he keeps adding more and more as he did in No Way Home, eventually they become permanent and people can move to the main universe. Makes me wonder if the spider-man spell was actually the universe being shuffled somehow, NOT just a memory wipe. So Strange REDEFINED their reality while he thought he was only 'brainwashing' reality. He will realize that in the movie. He was basically a chimp with a gun.

The fun thing about Stephen’s character is he acts pragmatic and detached and as this stoic vigil- but he’s totally emotional. He’s absolutely empathic and swayed by both his own emotions and concern for others. It’s what holds him back from being this godly protector but also keeps him human and imperfect. No one understood why he was so cocky in No Way Home and I argued again and again it’s because he still battles with this same complex because it isn’t that easy to just change.

Stephen (I can call him that) was not flexing or bragging by casting the spell, as it was a standard spell of forgetting. Who would he even be flexing and/or bragging to? By the current understanding of how the spell works even he wouldn't remember casting the spell due to it containing the details of Peter being Spider-Boy. It also wasn't a flex because he had successfully used it before without any issue. The warning Wong gave wouldn't have even been given if he knew it had worked before; especially considering it was done by them ("We've used it for a lot less"). Whilst it's arguable that it was Stephen's fault as he was casting this spell, this is incorrect. This is quickly ascertained after looking at how Spider-Boy changed the parameters of the spell four times (Stephen said six and Spider-Boy five but it was actually four). Before the very first change he was told "it's very difficult and dangerous to change it mid-casting" but he then went ahead and changed it anyway. He then subsequently continued to change it after being specifically told "let's not change the parameters of this spell anymore while I'm casting". As for excusing this ridiculous behaviour due to Spider-Boy not knowing the full details; what further details anyone need to know beyond "people will forget you were ever Spider-Man." What did he think was going to happen? Did he think all of those "people" he mentioned during the cast were in fact not people? If he had any questions about the specifics of the spell or wanted exclusions from the self explanatory "people" part of it; he could have asked between the lobby and the crypt rather than asking about the crypt. I don't ask nor need to know or even care which brushes a decorator is going to use after they have stated "I will paint that wall red." and have then agreed. I also then don't ask them to change the colour four times after they'd started to paint it - as doing so the outcome would obviously be...brown. The enforcer of such spells is Wong, the Sorcerer Supreme whose responsibility is to protect reality not Stephen. Wong didn't tell Stephen not to cast, even knowing it was their intention to do so. He just an off through a portal with suitcases presumably filled with Beyoncé albums.

Let’s be real, the reason why Strange acted so out of character in No Way Home is because Multiverse of Madness was originally supposed to come out prior to his cooperation with Spider-Man. My theory on what happened with the spell and Doctor Strange's recklessness has to do with the multiverse happening. Yes, Strange is arrogant, and yes, Wong warned him about the unknown frontiers of that spell. But there are key words in what they say. "It's just a standard spell of forgetting". It was, for as long as there was a sacred timeline, a delimitation, or enclosed "space" (timespace), provided to the spell. "The entire world is about to forget that Peter Parker is Spiderman" could work, but it was not enclosed to "in this reality/timeline/universe (or whatever)," because it was never a problem. Wong's always been cautious with spells that may be more than what they seem, but Strange, even as a Sorcerer Supreme is usually betting on the ods of it turning out fine (such as trying to use the mirror dimension against a kid having confidence on power instead of intelligence or strategy, giving up the stone to Thanos betting on the 14 million to one odds, etc). And in this one case, where there was never a chance of a multiverse collapse, as there was no such thing just a few days ago maybe, Strange shouldn't have been troubled to think the spell could turn out as disastrous as it did. And 2 more dialogues show that. First "[I always forget] you're just a kid." Yes, Strange was reckless, but he counted on Peter to be mature enough so as to not ruin the spell, or not make anything to mess something dangerous for the unknown as any spell would be. And second and I think most important is "This shouldn't even be possible," after Peter gets back to the Sanctum just after the Green Goblin appears. This line sounds as if there was not supposed to be any mayor consequence to the spell failing, or bringing anyone from outside the universe. We never actually know what the spell is supposed to do, and even at the end of the movie it's that same spell which sends every foreigner entity to their respective universes. And it was a spell they used frequently "For much less." It even was the preferred option against the usage of an hypothetical reality bending time stone. In conclussion, it wasn't a dangerous spell, but it's boundaries were unknown to everyone, and they could've remain unknown had the universe stayed as the sacred timeline one. A fatalist perspective should be that the sorcerer's shouldn't use any kind of spell, but then, what would Earth do without some of its mightiest defenders. Strange isn't really at fault here, and the whole compendium of spells could now have many different variations as a result of the multiverse being born, but that's something that Strange will apparently be investigating in The Multiverse of Madness. So I see that as a mature approach from him to what happened with Peter. And his usage of the spell was responsible, with an unfortunate disregard of Peter's maturity and responsibility when casting the spell, which was not out of irresponsibility from Strange, but respect for someone who also faced death and overcame it. P.S. To the final bit of the video. All the points could be more or less explained really quick and without there being holes in the plote. Why didn't Strange call the other sorcerers, because there was no universe ending event, remember he had contained the spell and there were only bad guys amock. Yes, they were needed to be dealt with quickly, but they were not even world ending threats, tough, but not that much, and it was also a lesson on how to deal with the consequences of your actions from him to Peter, proof of this is how swift Peter was when capturing them. What he didn't account for was Peter misbehaving again and taking the universe ending spell from him, and that's the bit of arrogance I mentioned earlier, he thought of Peter as a kid this time, and was overwhelmed in a simple play of intelligence. And last, why wasn't Wong or anyone else at the universe ending event of the Statue of Liberty, well, he was stuck until then, and after being released he didn't have time to do anything but stop the villains. And even if he could call Wong or anyone else, Strange's still the most powerful sorcerer in the world. The Sorcerer Supreme is just a title, I assume. At least, there isn't any indication of Wong being more powerful than Strange in the movie, he's just the one at charge because Strange was blipped for 5 years.

Its not entirely strange's fault. I think we all got it wrong, when peter ask strange "can some people still know?" And strange replied "Thats not how the spell works.", That sentence alone already established that the spell should not be modified. After that peter ask strange to exclude a few people, and im pretty sure strange knows that shouldnt be possible but, because he wanted to help, so he try to modified the spell. While he's busy modifying the spell peter talks to much that cause the modifying to fails. Those dialogues explain it all.

I think the only reason strange decided to help Peter was because of what he said: "It's not about me." You for sure know where Steven had learnt that quote. When Peter said that, Strange realized that this request was not a selfish one, but a selfless one. That's why he took the risk. Peter botching the spell is like spilling ink on the paper.

Maybe the simple explanation for why Strange was so “wrong”, both in actions and characterization, is that the Stephen Strange we see in Spider-Man No Way Home is an impostor - maybe he’s a Skrull, or more likely a mystical entity posing as Strange. Maybe Wong and the other masters of the mystic arts have their suspicions and that’s why they haven’t reinstated him as Sorcerer Supreme.

I... feel mixed, on this. If every other Super Hero had just stood up for Peter, would that have helped exonerate him, or cast more doubt onto the other Heroes? Frankly I agree with you that this was a *VERY* messed up decision on Strange's part, and even seems out of character, for whatever reason. But I don't think any of the other proposed solutions would've done any differently or better? The Court of Public Opinion is always messy and messed up, but we have to just be true to ourselves do what we believe is right and whatever happens unfortunately happens. We can't affect what people choose to think, short of manipulating them, and from what I can see every version of solution presented here for Peter's problem is just another version of the core issue, "manipulating them."

I think Professor Hulk could've stood up for him. He did become popular after the aftermath of Infinity War. He could've thrown Peter some clout and sponsored him and helped to explain the situation with Mysterio. Sure some wouldn't believe it, but I think you'd change a few minds if you have an avenger who is also a favourite of the public advocating for you.

1) he was definitely worried about reprisal, from Wong. He even mentioned it. This is why he didn't enlist the help of other sorcerers. 2) maybe "sorcerer supreme" is like the darksaber, you can't just GIVE it to someone. It can only be obtained after the previous title holder passes on. (Leading to Wong's likely death in multiverse of madness)

Both Strange and Peter share responsibility. Sure, through the movie, Strange places a lot of the blame on Peter, but I think a lot of that was him projecting. He knew he screwed up. But there was an emergency and he didn't have the time to reflect and think about his role in events. Now that he's had some time to cool off, I believe we will see him be a lot more introspective in Multiverse of Madness.

When Peter first visits Dr. Strange (21 minutes in) he says it’s not about him, but his actions hurt a lot of people, “my aunt, Happy, my girlfriend, my best friend”. Right after Wong says, “He’s good at forgetting things..”. Peter literally named everyone who means something to him. Dr. Strange casts his spell and only “remembers” when Peter repeats who he wants who he’d like to still know he’s Spider-Man. I’d say the good Doctor could have been more thorough when vetting exactly what Peter wanted.

After watching this whole video i must say, Ryan you are the elitist when it comes to video breakdowns, personal gatherings of facts, and presentation!🙌🏾 This hypes me up even more to watch Multiverse of Madness and now i have my own *Fan Theory* Since Dr Strange has shown us a pretty good indictation that he acts irresponsible with his powers, it may be a good reason that the Dr Strange in No Way Home was from another universe. This could of happened when he blipped and since because he was the Supreme at the time there could of been other versions of Strange that blipped at the same time and went to other universes. What If in MOM (Multiverse Of Madness) it goes over that factor somehow? Overall he could be another Strange or Ryan is right and its actually Mephisto.!?(Which would be a great setup for introducing the Ghost Rider/Blade universe anyway so id love it)

Question: How does the memory loss spell work in the end? Everyone who knew spiderman (or his true identity) is coming to MCU. Strange casts a memory loss spell to stop them from coming Does that mean that in all of the multi verse now, no one knows spiderman's true identity or no one knows Peter Parker? How does that explain that other Peters are not coming here because they have this knowledge too (of themselves and spiderman's identity)

That's one of my major issues with the movie (of only a few, since I do love the movie)-- they (Dr. S and Peter) never discussed the exact implications, that's why Peter has all those requests and questions AFTER Dr. S starts casting. And it isn't JUST because he was rejected by MIT. There was so much more to it.

Ryan you make a lot of great points and I agree with them all. The way Dr. Strange was written in No Way Home really bothered me too and I felt like he was acting out of character. My theory to why, is because he might be a variant or a Skrull ( this one is a bit reaching). I have my reservations about how the MCU is handling the Multi Verse and I am hoping it is not the fix all for certain things; mainly explaining how other characters from other studio movies can exist in the MCU and becoming the reset button for things. Marvel has been focusing so much on the Multi Verse, that is seems to over power good story telling, which is why there are certain issues with No Way Home. I enjoyed No Way Home and loved a lot of things about it, but going back to Dr. Strange, he was not written well and it did feel a little bit of back sliding his character. Maybe the new Dr. Strange movie will provide some answers and explain why his character is so different? I have low expectations for the new Dr. Strange movie, which is sad because Dr. Strange is one of my all time favorite Marvel characters. As great as the concept of the multiverse is, it is also to easy for things to become convoluted and over crowded. There are lot of stories and threads that MCU has laid out and it is going to be an interesting ride to see how they all pan out. As great as it is for everything to connect, I question does it really have too? Can't some stories exist on there own and maybe there is a small thing that connects to a big thing. That is one of the reasons why I enjoy Moon Knight, because it is a self contained story that exist in the MCU with out the need to make forced connections. I do think the show is helping setup other story lines, specifically the supernatural stuff, but I don't see Moon Knight working with the Avengers and that is not a bad thing. I trust Kevin Feige and I am sure there is a plan in motion and like all big story arcs, some of this movies and shows play a small part to the bigger picture, I just hope it doesn't get away from good story telling.
