@@lavenderangel2655 there was nothing bitter about the comment… someone with Afro hair who has also done the research, can better speak on this matter. I don’t know why we think someone who doesn’t have our hair type can suddenly appear and push their products on us. Don’t be naive! Her hyperpigmentation efforts failed (I went to them for treatment and it didn’t work. Cost me almost £1000 and now it’s out of business).

More excellent information, thank you. My beautiful type 4, high to medium-high, very dense hair loves my routine which includes hot oil pre-shampoo with olive oil before every shampoo, conditioning masks for moisture and for protein, and the LOC method: LIQUID (leave in - I love Paul Mitchell's The Original) OIL (olive oil) CONDITIONER (Creamy leave-in). I also swear by gentle scalp messages. I learned to first love and appreciate the beauty of my hair, and then to pay attention to what my hair responds to and does not respond to. For example a lot of people with Type 4 hair love using the LCO method (liquid conditioner oil) but my hair hates it! My hair responds much better to the LOC method. I have learned alot through researching, paying attention to how my hair responds, and watching other KZbinrs giving sound information like Curly Chemistry who shares information from a chemist's perspective, and GlamFam, as well as Dr. V. Knowledge is power!

My Black Woolly Hair Family why are you guys listening to someone who has straight hair telling you about your own woolly hair? Just about most of everything she is talking about has nothing to do with our hair. All problems with Black peoples hair Worldwide starts with DIET, so-called dry hair comes from the poison diet that Black people eat Worldwide. Family Refer to our Doctors like Dr Sebi and others when it comes to your health. My family has been in the Natural Hair care business for over a decade so i know what I'm talking about when it comes to Woolly Hair. The key to woolly hair health is proper diet, proper exercise, proper breathing techniques that no one ever talks about, and much much Sun Shine. Black people have no idea the power of Melanin that our body naturally produce to keep us healthy. The problem is that we eat a poison diet full of meat, starch, sugar, & salt products that is toxic to our Melanin which is something that White scientist who study Melanin will NEVER ADMIT. One thing to mention with combing forces of type 4 hair in shower: Wet hair is far more prone to breakage so this might not be the better option although in theory, it makes sense. From a practical perspective, Type 4 hair is prone to a lot of knots and tangles. These will catch on a comb no matter how gentle the person is. So groming forces are even more amplified when this happens with wet hair. The alternative is an oil like grape seed or something with conditioning agents earlier before washing to help detangle. Keep hair in sections and take care not to disturb the ends of the hair too much when washing the scalp, deep conditioning, rinsing and drying with a towel. Hope someone found this helpful

I spritz my hair first then apply a detangling conditioner and then detangle my hair before shampooing. The parts that are detangled I leave in twists. I use twists to wash my hair, unraveling when I need to apply products then retwisting. I find it's easier and I only need to detangle my hair once during the entire process.

I’ve had a similar experience with dermatologists smh. They never offer any solutions and barely glance at my scalp during the appointment. I saw one PHENOMENAL Black female derm. once. The appointment lasted two hours, she did a thorough exam, asked me a lot of good questions to understand my history, prescribed me medications that I’m now learning other docs would’ve made me fight for or never told me about at all, referred me to a stylist I ended up loving, and she even attached pictures of her hair product recommendations in my patient portal. She was training two other doctors-a Brown woman from Brazil and a white woman-during my appointment on delivering culturally competent healthcare, and they were awesome too! I still chuckle when I remember the white woman asking what “tender headed” means 😆 I’m still grieving the fact that the doctor decided to go back to teaching soon after my first appointment. I’m happy that her knowledge and compassion will produce better doctors, but I was HEARTBROKEN. If I ever find another quality doc., I swear I’ll plan my life around him/her 😭

I’m having a similar issue with doctors giving a hard time recommending sorely needed medications.

Also the main thing for black hair is ease of use and the expense I have pretty manageable hair as I am Caribbean and even then it’s hard to manage so cheaper, better, faster. Not many black people want to use luxury products (wouldn’t mind a luxury conditioner as that would last longer) in their hair they just find something that works and stick to it. Your products look perfect but I would be looking to spend around £20-30 a month on my hair (and I started growing it within the last two years and probably spend more than most on hair care not including hairdressers) just fyi 🙏🏽 also from other people that do similar research black hair loves water 🚿( so an extra rinse in the shower can be very helpful this stopped my dandruff) and stretching ( ie braiding not extra pulling) which helps a lott our hair tends to grow fastest while it is braided as there are way less breakages Love your videos!

All hair has a change in diameter asian Caucasian and African it’s just a difference of distance No one wants only running down their hair. Rather African hair often is not washed in a way that maximizes water absorption and retention thus dries out faster. Combing removes our natural clumping curls which retain water, elasticity; so it is counter predictive to continue combing which causes cuticle lift, cuticle breakage, split end and hair breakage Oils are meant to reduce inflammation, bacteria. That’s is the usefulness of oils. Once their is enough water in the hair and conditioner you may apply a pomade to the hair that doesn’t remove easily to retain the water and conditioner and also protects the hairs cuticles. There are multiple diameter sizes and elasticity that contribute to how one can style. You may heat press the hair if that is your style preference easily if your diameter is larger and have a medium to low elasticity. The hair may not be healthy curly but you may have length. Those diameter with finer diameters and high to medium elasticity is who the dr is referring. We may need high pH or abrasive shampoos to remove heavy metals, petroleum, mineral oils, Shea butter e tc from the hair. It should be done in a downward motion to remove these ingredients from the hair and scalp; start the clumping process; and avoid tangling. I am a specialist in the field and researcher on my own dime with university labs in Canada. This is how I know the dr is mistaken unfortunately.

Yes Dr. V you need to make it. Their are millions of people suffering from dry scalp. If you can make it and it works you will become a billionaire. Once you perfect it, you can modify it for other hair types. I think you might be underestimating your impact on the consumer market.

Great video! I am a cosmetologist/hair stylist with type 4 hair in the US/ States. I also wear my hair natural and often get asked about products and techniques since its fairly long. I am so happy you made this video, haircare is science and there isn’t a lot of science around type 4 hair. I’m happy to be able to recommend this video so folks can learn the science behind their curls. There were so many good tips in this video I’ve been sharing for year all in one place with the scientist, you breaking it down is a clear- complete way. I also learned a ton and it makes so much sense (didnt know about the shape or size or density differences but it makes so much sense). I think a moisturizing tonic for the scalp could be groundbreaking especially given the amount of type 4 folks I know struggling with dry scalp. Also I so enjoy learning from your videos!❤❤❤ I use Olaplex’s complete line of product because my 4C hair is extremely brittle, no surprise, and its been the best line of product to help me retain length but I’m eager to take a look at their ingredient list (specifically pay their shampoos, conditioner and styling products) because I know they add fragrance, I can’t think of one US hair care line that doesn’t, and I’m curious to know if they include some of the ingredients you mentioned. I’m eager to try your line to see how my hair responds!! This is exciting

Loved the fact that you are specifically taking the time to tackle 4c hair. Definitely we are the most challenged. Very good information put foward. There were areas of enlightenment for sure and new knowledge acquired. Just a few things you disagreed with that as someone who is a 4c & has worked with 4c especially type hair for the past 10 years in our Haircare establishments in Africa I have seen work very well in restoring women’s hair and healing scalp ailments as well. Am not a doctor as you are, but working on our day to day struggles as 4c hair ,through research plus trial and error has enabled us come up with real solutions that are helping our people . There are a select group of essential oils we cannot ignore as key components and contributors to the general health of our scalp and hair like rosemary, teatree, etc possibly you meant only those you mentioned we should stay clear of. I truly think it comes down to how properly we can formulate and balance out the formulation to work well with the users without adverse effects for most. The source of these oils matters too that I must add. How are we going to help our sisters with traction alopecia, receding hairlines etc without the use of natural oils together with the select essential oils. In our case it would be close to impossible. As for a scalp moisturizer that beats dandruff any day and dry scalp, am glad we have found that solution too. I hope you will be able to do the same for the women your side as you continue to formulate . Well, I hope this will be viewed as a healthy discussion especially in trying to keep finding workable solutions for us all. Keep sharing 🥰

I think this was a great scientific explanation of black hair, and thank you for taking the time to do your research,. I so appreciate it. However, as you discuss your own hair experiences, there is no comparison to a black woman's coarse hair experience. One good thing about this video is I think more of us will look at ingredients in our products but I wouldn't toss a product that has met my needs for years. Again, great scientific video.

Your video was recommended to me and this is a life saver! I struggle with psoriasis so badly to where every year I have to cut off my beautiful afro. I'm still debating whether I should do it again. No doctor has even mentioned the whole "malassezia" thing to me ever. I never heard of it! I try putting oil on my scalp and it irritates my scalp so badly the plaques look like oily, wet flakes when I go to remove them. My scalp bleeds to the point to where I'm in tears a lot of times. Only when my hair is shaved my scalp improves. I miss having long hair. I wish you did create a product for scalp dryness so I can keep my lovely afro like plenty of other women who are struggling with this. I will be trying your products in the new year. Thank you for this video I needed to see this because I was about to buy some growth oil for my scalp. I won't be buying that anymore. Again, thank you for this information! 💞

I appreciate the fact that you even made the time to include type 4 hair, but if I did any of this I'd be bald. Type 4 hair is so much more complex than any other, and 1 routine for all isn't going to work. You said yourself that you use these products on curly hair, which is typically type 3, not 4. I have kinky hair, true type 4, and I can't use the same product as someone with curly hair and expect the same results they get. Washing with only shampoo on the scalp while conditioner is on the strands...which haven't beel cleansed, is not going to work for me. My hair would dry out and fall off in no time flat. I appreciate the thought and some things I may take into consideration, but I'll stick to my routine that's gotten me absolutely amazing results.

I greatly appreciated your information today. I am a 71 y/o woman who processed her hair for so many years, I am amazed that my hair still grows. I love every moment of caring for my 4c natural hair. There are some challenges, however, for example, my hair is very coily and has so much shrinkage. This means that no sooner I comb out my hair, when I return to the top, there is resistance, (knotting) at the roots. Anyone casually observing my hair will not believe the actual length. I will take note of your recommendations and observe my hair closely. Thank you. (I live in the West Indies and follow you on your KZbin channel)

Dimethicone has been demonized in the haircare industry because it is a plastic and not water soluable, and the build up of said plastic can lead to dry hair and breakage. It requires a sulfate to remove, which is not a gentle shampoo that most are telling us to stay away from because it is too harsh. There are other ingredients that give us the slip that we need for combability than silicones. But should you choose to use them, be ready to clarify with a sulfate. Especially for fine ,low porosity hair that is easy to gave product build up. But thank you for tackling this very difficult subject!
