9:35 Was the case for my grandpa. My grandpa had cancer and thought he was healing well so he was happy and energetic and then my grandma got the news that the cancer basically spread into the whole body and he most likely would have only 2 more weeks for living. So my grandma literally told the doctor: "Don't tell him that or he'll jump from the balcony and if that happens I'll have to take the responsibility for that!" My grandpa was a very proud and strong person, so I could totally see that happening for him. I'm glad they didn't tell him, he was happy and hoping till the end.

I trained to be a nurse but I found each year I was getting more paperwork and less hands on patient care. @@MiddleEarthGirl75 It kind of sucks because I feel like it may have to do with burnout or as the saying goes "when you hear hoof steps, think horses not zebras" meaning when a patient presents with some certain symptoms, don't get anchored on this one rare diagnosis and rule out the common illnesses first. I definitely don't agree with what your doctor did, because I had a gastroenterologist (stomach doctor) tell me that my problem of three years would be fixed if I didn't take so many supplements (FYI I had only taken them for 2 months when I had went to see him) and his dismissive behavior had me looking for another GI doctor IMMEDIATELY. So I agree, some doctors need to be more clear with their thought process, or otherwise I am going to think they don't care. Or that they're discriminating because of my cruddy insurance or my age or whatever.

@PaulR I suspect that it is the case for lot of them (i am French, and that is relatable). As a phlebotomist, the amount of time I waste with illegible Dr's handwriting is absolutely mind blowing, it can turn a ten minute procedure into a 20 minute phone call as we all try to work out what on earth the Dr was requesting. The other one is when Dr's just make up their own acronyms for things. I once had a Dr write "RPM" on the form. I called the lab and they were like "revs per minute?" Anyway, lab ended up having to contact the dr, it was just a standard kidney test. Some of the funniest handwriting one was when my boss said in all seriousness to look at it upside down because sometimes then you could work it out. We did work that one out, it was blood group. Something else we do is ask the patient, like if I think I know what something is I will say "does it make sense for your Dr to be testing you for this?" This once backfired very, very badly (but also hilariously) when I asked a patient "does it make sense for your Dr to be testing you for coeliac disease?" And the patients earnestly talked about how the local health department was poisoning his water to make him fart a lot and make him smell bad and discredit him so that the judge wouldn't believe him when he went to court to accuse his psychiatrists of following him. The poor man was obviously experiencing psychosis. However, since he appeared to be having symptoms of farting, I ascertained that he was probably being tested for coeliacs disease and went ahead with the blood test while he continued to talk about the health department. Sweet guy, but good lord that was one day where keeping a straight face was difficult.

Tried to help them understand that was what desired, and it was there signed and everything....I was usually the one who made the bracelets that said it too....and you get it of course, when the time comes to sign the papers, the family is trying to convince them not to sign papers. But, it's a personal choice of the person, as long as they are of sound mind and body when they make that choice. It sucks for the family most of the time. And you feel for them. But it is what the patient/ resident wanted.

Doctor mike I really love what you are doing here on KZbin. I had spent a year incredibly depressed and unhealthy. I went to see my doctor multiple times and she put me on 17 different medications at 15 years old. Well I went to the emergency room because i had been passing out. They referred me to a cardiologist because I kept passing out. All the color drained from my face, lips turned blue, and started sweating I would wake up in a panic. The cardiologist is the only doctor who I found who actually helped me. She helped me fix my diet. And didn't give me a single pill. I ended up having neurocardiogenic vasovagle syncope. She gave me a list of foods to limit, fix my water intake, stress mechanisms, and no caffeine. I thank that cardiologist everyday. The only thing I think I would change about the medical field is nit jumping straight to medication. I love how you look at your field. And how u practice yourself. Keep up the good work doctor because you are saving lives with each day and I'm sure each video.

@@nikki11111 Jaundice is the name of a symptom more than anything else. Jaundice happens because of other things. Like how someone diagnosed with a concussion might have a symptom of lethargy (tiredness/sluggishness). Diagnosis is comprised of symptoms. Because jaundice is a symptom, it could fall under more than one diagnosis. To be sure what's actually causing the jaundice, it's best to see a doctor as soon as you can (some conditions that cause jaundice are life-threatening, so you shouldn't take a symptom like that lightly).

Well said Dr Mike, that's one of the major issues on medical professionals minds. My younger sister is a palliative care nurse and mum a retired midwife/a and e sister. I'd say tell the the patient the truth but delicately with family help. Mum agrees but sister disagrees slightly, how you approach the patient and family changes the dynamics. I'm all for being forward. Katie in Glasgow

They usually leave it to the pharmacy to figure out. I've had doctors try to quote patients, idk how they do it but they have been wrong on the price every time. To be fair, doctors aren't really able to tell you the price. You only know if you either 1) let the pharmacy bill the insurance and see what comes back or 2) call the insurance and ask. OH! Or c) check goodrx to get a ballpark worst case scenario price. (good if your insurance sucks or you have no insurance)

I have. I have a chronic illness and have been with my doctor for a few years. One time, I wasn't working, didn't have insurance, my doctor knew I was paying cash so he asked if I was going to be able to afford my medications. I said maybe. He went and found any samples he had of the meds I was prescribed so I didn't have to pay for those.

The only doctor I trust anymore is my OB. My PCP legit told me I had allergies, as I’m sitting there begging him to listen to me because I knew something was wrong, and pushed me out the door. Three days later I went to the ER because I felt like I couldn’t breath. I had pneumonia, strep, a rash down my throat, and tonsil stones. Worst experience of my life trying to get better. But such a relieving feeling knowing I wasn’t making up my symptoms in my own head.

I'm a bit late on watching Dr. Mike but I'm really loving this channel. Watching his stuff makes me realize how similar animal medicine is to human medicine. I'm a veterinary technician (have been for many years) who is currently going through veterinary school and oh boy... Some of the things I've heard about my profession and some of the things I have googled are astounding. I can also relate so much to doctors running late. Please be patient... Luckily, I work in a small enough clinic we can reschedule things if needed (most people are very understanding) but I promise medical professionals (human and animal) are not deliberately running late to waste your time. Many unforeseen events happen in medicine and sometimes we have to prioritize once patient over another. It doesn't mean we don't care and doesn't mean we are trying to waste your time. Anyway, there are other aspects that are similar but I'll stop with the crazy rant. Thanks Dr. Mike! Go do good medicine and show the world what medicine is really and should always be about!

Yea sadly a single medical emergency can cause someone to lose their entire life savings if your insurance company doesn't pay for something or if the amount they cover isn't enough as for example my grandma was sent to the hospital by ambulance and was there overnight and the bill was 248k just for the ambulance, staying overnight and the tests they ran and keep in mind 250k is enough to buy a house or if you live somewhere more expensive its still enough to pay half so if it weren't for her having amazing insurance and it covering most of the cost that right there would have been more than her entire life savings and another thing is her prescriptions costed over 2k per year so overall the entire health system in the US is just fucked
