I'd love to see Susan return (along with seeing ace, romana, leela and jamie again, those along with Sarah Jane are the most iconic and beat companions of the classic era) but until then I'd suggest listening to an earthly child (where the 8th doctor checks in on Susan and we learn what's happened to her and what she has done with her life) and it's follow up stories relative dimensions, Lucie Miller and to the death (probably one of my favourite stories ever but for it's for effect you really need to listen to all 4 seasons of the Lucie Miller era of 8th doctor audios), which covers her time on earth (don't expect any happy endings though) and what she has been up to (there's also a short story where the doctor tries to convince her not to join the time war but I've forgotten what that's called), after that she's in the time war series (and two of the unbound doctor stories, which are what if stories), which we all know the end of (but I think ace was in them for a while and she survived, so who knows maybe Susan does as well). It's not impossible for timelord companions to return, just say that Susan, romana and leela were all off world researching the post time war universe when the master destroyed everything (that makes sense for me).

All the spinoff characters should return with their own spinoff(s). Along with several comic book, Big Finish, Moffat and (forgive me) several Flux characters who where shamefully half developed. I can see Gemma Chan being cast as Romana. But if as Mia she could be a member of Faction Paradox. I want Ace and Miss Quill butt heads like in the audio In Remembrance. Whilst blowing up a building with Gwen and Norton Folgate. But I feel that Donna and Wilf had the perfect bittersweet farewell. It would be a shame to water it.

I also have a number of characters and would like them to return to the series. 1. Luke Smith and K-9 Mark 4 After Sarah Jane's death, their story has not been revealed. Of course, there is a story, but this is not enough. 2. Mr. Smith I just like this supercomputer, what to hide) It would be nice to get it back. 3. Rose Tyler It would be interesting to learn about her adventures in a parallel world. 4. Joe Grant You can somehow develop her story further, after the events in "The Sarah Jane adventures". 5. Ace The continuation of her story was supposed to be told in season 5 of the Sarah Jane adventures, but this did not happen. 6. Ianto Jones I know he died during the events of Torchwood, but it would be possible to come up with something. For miracles always happen in Doctor Who. 7. Clyde and Rani I would like to know their history and preferably radically different. Because what they wanted to embody in season 5 of "The Sarah Jane adventures" sucks. 8. Rory and Amy Yes, these are Moffat characters, but why not? 9. Jenny, Vastra and Strax We don't know what happened to them afterwards. As for me, this is a significant gap. 10. Donna Noble We don't know anything about her life after the "End of Time", so we can somehow develop the plot further. Maybe return Martha Jones, Miсky Smith, Susan and Clara.

Gwen in Torchwood and Martha in Unit series with potential for cross-over and means to tie up loose ends and re-visit old characters without having to shoehorn them all in to the main program. Although a heartfelt meeting between the Dr and Wilf wouldn't go amiss. If RTD does this I promise to watch them all twice to help ratings.

I love Donna. Couldn't stand her at first but in Series 4 she was excellent. But her story is done. Wilf knows he's forgiven, he saw The Doctor at Donna's wedding. Other characters were left more open-ended, but dragging up Donna again would be wrong. Similarly, Wilf was great, but his story has been told.

Freema has a lead spot on New Amsterdam in US. I can’t see her returning as Martha for long, right now. I could see her co-leading a new Torchwood team with Gwen, tho! (And Rhys needs to be Mr. Mom to their kids!) Also, as soon as RTD was announced, Naoko said she was up for a return! I think Gareth is willing, as well. Exposit some timey-wimey/parallel earth explanation as to their survival, and we have a core team. (Iantosh maybe? If the alternates have no clue who Jack was before they meet this Torchwood?) Bring in Luke, Clyde, and Rani as junior members against Jack’s constant frustration. No need for Sky, IMO. Susan better be back for 60th or we riot! I can see her and Jenny reclaiming the diner from Clara and Me as proper Gallifreyans. I’d also like to see Jackson Lake get an update. Or at least David M returning as another character, perhaps in pre-medieval Britannia? 😉

But if it’s from the series, and rumor of David Tennant returning, I would like to see the Doctor return to Universe 2 and meet up with Rose and the Meta Crisis Doctor. See where they are and have an adventure with them. Shown how far Meta Crisis has come and shows how Rose grew up from the Love struck girl she was, back in Journeys End.

I agree that Martha is the hot one (my favourite companion ever) but I'm surprised to hear you say that it was an unusual thing for the companion to outshine the Doctor. I think that's always been the case, as far back as 1963. In the very first Doctor Who story, the Doctor is captured when he smokes a pipe by cave people looking for fire, and throughout the rest of it it is normally Ian and Barbara who take charge of the situation.

The characters I would love to see return are: River Song because she was awesome and i would to see how she reacts with a new version of the doctor. Madame Vastra, Jenny and Strax would be cool to have pop back in for a few episodes. Their hope dynamic is funny and entertaining. And finally I agree that Martha Jones should return. The doctor still has her cell phone and it would be funny to have the it ringing and the doctor shouting Martha before frantically searching for it under a pile do mess.

The big question here is whether RTD wants his second era to be a rerun of his first, with returning characters, or whether he wants something completely fresh and new. Perhaps he could have a bit of both: mostly new, but with a few returning characters. I rather doubt that he'll wallow in nostalgia and invite them all back again, but we'll see. Bear in mind that all the actors are significantly older by now, and their reappearances might in some cases be disappointing for that reason.

However, in this case, RTD seems to be intending to start his run with the anniversary special, which traditionally ropes in a number of old characters. I remember Russel talking about bringing Sarah Jane back that first time, and how they knew it would be a ratings hit for the fans, but he didn't want to do it unless there was a story behind it. That will be the thin line in this new series. The BBC wants to bring ratings back up, and a return of the greatest hits series is probably what management wants. But I don't see Russel doing the easy ratings grab when he could build something new and stronger.

Something that does upset me is that toshiko only met the doctor once before she died, and she never really understood his importance. About Lady Christina not being companion material...I would actually LOVE to have a companion with "questionable morals". I've always loved heroes who weren't overly moral and make some some "unethical" choices. Not that the Doctor and some of the companions haven't strayed from that hero type from time to time but an official companion like Christina would be a fresh change. So glad Donna and Wilf (RIP Bernard Cribbins) are in the 60th. Always wanted Donna's story to come back around so she could eventually get her memories back. When Donna and Ten were announced for it I was hoping for Wilf to return to as I LOVE his friendship with the Doctor. I really want Jenny, Vastra, and Strax to return. They just disappeared without any real conclusion. Always wanted them to be the official companions for a season or 2.

My #1 choice would be Sgt. Benton, even if he was to do just one episode. John Levene has always said that he’d jump at the chance to come back, so, why not? I agree with “comet star” that seeing what happened to Susan. The Doctor said that he would come back, but he never said in what point in time, so why not check up on her with Doctor 14? The character they left out, but should come back with Martha, is Mickey Smith. As you all remember, he came back to our reality to work with Martha and “Captain Cheesecake” in Torchwood, and eventually married Martha. So, it would make sense to bring them both back.

I think Astrid Peth would have made a good companion, unfortunate she was more-or-less written out at the end of Voyage of the Damned (but then Kylie Minogue would probably not be/have been available for a full series).

I would be really happy to discover Ace in NuWho, I haven't watched Classic Who but she is one of the companions who interest me the most! Also it would be great to see Luke get some development, it would make perfect sense to have him help the Doctor regularly, I don't understand why he was never referenced with SJ after Davies' run. I 100% agree for Donna, I would absolutely LOVE to see her get an actual happy ending, only for one episode, for the Doctor to finally have peace (they must certainly still feel guilty for erasing her memories right?) And I couldn't agree more for Martha. I love her, she is one of my favourite companions and I can't fathom why the Doctor never tries to contact her again after his regeneration. I know it's because Moffat wanted to create his own new companions and kinda "forget" the others but I think it was a poor scenaristic choice. Martha should have been able to contact the Doctor on his phone again at least once, and get to meet the new doctors. She was literally erased from the narrative after serie 4, while she had that much potential, it's just unfair and a waste imo. I wish Davies would bring her back just to show that she is living happily and being good at defending the earth! Anyway great video and as you can see, I really like your choices!

It's been 10 months, so I assume you've seen Ace in Power of the Doctor. If you haven't, you should check out Rememberance of the Daleks. It's one of the best bridges between Classic/New Who and will showcase most of the references from Power of the Doctor, such as her Nitro-9, Baseball bat, and experience annihilating Daleks as a teenager.

While it wouldn’t be a “return” as she’s never been seen in live action, I think bringing-in Vienna Salvatori from Big Finish for a two-parter would help bring-back many viewers as a large number of Doctor Who fans are also Star Trek fans & so would tune-in to see Chase Masterson playing the role on TV.

Honestly I'd rather just have a new season of Torchwood (or even a feature length). They even set it up perfectly at the end of the last season with Walsh and the other one potentially being involved (even if I did hate Walsh and the other guy) but then that story about Barrowman came out. But even without him they could still do it (wouldn't be as good but they could and would still probably be better than the last 3+ seasons).

I'd rather he didn't just bring back previous characters and instead do new things, I don't want (and am worried that this will be) a do you remember this (we all want it but we also all dislike it when it happens), I'd be cool with a few showing up so long as it's not just characters solely from Russell's era, like ace, Susan, romana, leela, Jamie, etc. Same with the rumours about the specials, I'm happy with Tennant getting a special with two other doctors getting the other two specials (like a classic doctor and the 8th doctor), but if it's just do you remember the Russell era I'd probably just not bother watching (it's just not interesting for me, I've always watched the show and I always want new things, I don't want to see a rerun of what we've already had). When it comes to the surviving characters from the waters of mars two ideas come to mind, either have them form a religion around the doctor, which could have interesting implications for the doctor with them being really uncomfortable with it or have them be the ones who form the organisation that were trying to kill the doctor in 11s era, with the doctor messing with time setting up the main antagonist of the next doctor (it would also make that plotline make more sense). When it comes to giving a companion a show I wouldn't pick Martha (put her in torchwood but if it does come back hopefully it's better than miracle day, which isn't difficult and more like children of earth or at the very least season 2), the best would be rose (they did it in big finish but what haven't they done), following her adventures in a whole new universe (in the audio they even had the character from her first episode who knew about the doctor, which would be cool), it's probably the most interesting option and has the most to explore but also it's probably a bit late to do something like that.

I think of all of these fine folk, Mia and Yuri are the ones I'd really want to see come back for story purposes, 'cause as you bring it up it really feels like there's an interesting story to be told. However... that story's more than ten years old now and could alienate a lot of newer fans if it's not handled exactly right. Makes it less likely. Certainly sounds like the returning character we're most likely to see is Ace, and I'd be incredibly excited if that happened.

I agree with all choices except Donna Noble, she was a moron and the worst companion ever. Martha Jones would be great as the head of Torchwood or the head of UNIT. And Gwen Cooper would be great in a spin-off series where she finds Mr. Smith, Sarah Jane's computer and joins forces with Sarah's son & K9 to carry on where Sarah left off defending the Earth. What ever and whom ever returns it will be 100% better with Davies at the helm again.
