Or between Troughton and Pertwee. Mind wiped, then when they let her go they erased her memories and restored the memories of his first two lives then make her change into Jon Pertwee using an extra secret regeneration. It would explain why the tardis is a police box, looks like Hartnell/Troughton's tardis but modernized and how she can be a past doctor which 13 can't remember. Also explains why Jon Pertwee was a fighter, because this secret doctor was trained to be a warrior.

Yes, exactly what my thoughts are. But if that's the case, I hope Jodie is in the wrong dimension because there have been too many retcons. I'm really excited and relieved that 3/5 episodes in this season have been decently fun, but here is my concern: Chibnall hasn't been careful with DW history so far--Jodie flew right to the pocket universe and knew right where it was when 12 never found it despite looking. He never went there until Gallifrey had gotten itself out of the pocket. Chibs obviously didn't know that. Say what you will about Moffatt--but he was always so careful to interweave correct Who history. And I have no such faith in Chibs. He had the Doc go back to NY in Tesla episode but the Doc can't ever go back to NY per ripping the world apart due to paradoxes created by the angels and Amy and Rory. Chibs obviously hasn't watched past series carefully and doesn't care enough to do so. This one was more fun--so were the skyfalls but I am annoyed that Chibs got this job and doesn't respect fans enough to use correct history. So if he retcons with a bunch of new female doctors, he had better be sure he can pull it off, and I don't have faith that he can. Clearly he cannot be bothered to watch Amy and Rory's sign off episode or Clara's sign off episode.

You've seen my comments about this on Twitter Liam, but for anyone who haven't seen it on twitter. It's possible that the Doctor has had previous cycles of regenerations before, as the Time Lords have brought Time Lords back from the dead by creating new bodies for a Time Lords life essence, they did it for the Master during the Time War, and we know Time Lord's Life Force can survive outside of a body, as the Classic Series has shown, it's possible even Rassillion has gone through such a process. And don't forget, our current Doctor is half human, as the 8th's Doctor Who film and Current series has as cannon, that may have effected the Doctors Memory between any possible new body. And YAY Jack's back!

@@marshymooo9312 regarding Tardis'es, they have a rudimentary physic link to their pilots and alter themselves to compliment their pilot, it's possible the "Ruth" Doctor's Tardis is a completely different Tardis to the Current Doctors one, but a part of the Doctor' s life force might contain a permeant imprint of a Police Box memory and so whatever Tardis the Doctor apparently steals each time, becomes a Police Box each time. AS for no Memory, remember, the Doctor isn't a full Time Lord, they are half Human, the process might be broken and a full new cycle with all memories intact might not be possible.

i think the solution is already in this episode. Jack said "they send someone back in time to change things". what if someone changed the past of the doctor? since capaldi we know that a timelord has at least from his subconcience influence on his regenerations (Capaldi/Calcilius), so with a changed timeline/personal history the doctor would make different choices for regenerations. it would also explain how the Master has now a new face even when Missy died for real. MAybe the Historie of the timelords itself has been changed.on they other hand,gioven the influence of the timelords and the doctor in particular,a changed history of the timelords would probably qualify as a paralell universe,since they inpacted it so much.

Liam Catterson I agree - and I cant see that chibnall could be that short sighted as to destroy 56 years of lore. It just wouldn’t not make any sense - not only a disrespect to Hartnell who had so much passion for the role, but so many plot inconsistencies. The TARDIS, for one - if she was pre-Hartnell she couldn’t possibly have one. Clara saw 11 faces of the Doctor I think when she jumped into his time stream? But I may be wrong. It could never work. But an alternate universe doctor would be great. I saw a theory that Thirteen is actually in the wrong universe, and has been the whole time, which is why Missy’s redemption seemingly didn’t happen, and why Gallifrey isn’t destroyed. But I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

I've just been thinking about this, I just realise that the Doctor meeting another secret Doctor isn't exactly new and I don't mean the 'War Doctor' ether, it has happened before in Classic Who, in a sense, this 'other' Doctor could be seen possibly being the Timeless child, what if the 'Fugitive/Ruth Doctor becomes the Lone Cyberman and needs to regenerate (her final regeneration) but she needs the 13th Doctor's help to do so, thus the Doctor feels she needs to give 'it' what 'it' wants... only when she regenerates she's, now he, is revealed to be the Timeless Child... who is, in fact, a certain old enemy... one who once travelled back in time and met a certain previous Doctor, What if 'Fugitive/Ruth Doctor's next & final incarnation turns out to be... the Doctors ultimate foe... the Valeyard..? (you should check out Trial of a Time) 'DOCTOR: Well, that can only be done by an order in High Council. MASTER [on screen]: Of course, Doctor. To protect their own secrets, they drew the Earth and its constellation billions of miles across space DOCTOR: Causing the fireball which nearly destroyed the planet. I would subscribe to the theory, that Chibnal is introducing "the other" into TV canon. That said, all my knowledge of "the other" is from different who wikis. If that is the case, than it doesn't change anything about the Doctor we know. Our Doctor would be "the other" reassembled as the Hartnell Doctor within the looms. (Anyone interested in that theory should read up on "the other" and looms on various Who wikis) Honestly that would be pretty cool.

I was sat there thinking, ‘Oh my lord...I know that voice...oh my God THATS John..’ and guess who turns up, only Javic Piotr Thane. Oh how I’ve missed him. I went into this episode genuinely thinking it was going to be abit dull. It wasn’t dull, but I found it...strange...I can’t describe it. Jack being back is brilliant but he’s not back back which is abit of a bummer. ‘The doctor’ reveal has me abit conflicted. Jo Martin seems ace! She’s got a nice air to her. But A. What is her outfit? *puts her in with Colin Baker* and B. If Chris chibnall messes with WHO canon he’s actually going to have a whovian riot on his hands. So is she alternate universe? Clone ? Or like a duplicate? Or the valeyard? (Though that’s meant to be the doctors darkest parts, no?) It just felt abit like ‘The next doctor’ (2008) I’ve got my fingers crossed there will be a proper conclusion or reveal for it! Just like the timeless child and the master and why jacks back etc etc so many QUESTIONS! Also! There’s a quote in ‘world Shapers’ which is actually canon, that I thought you’d like!! : ‘Within five million years the Cyberman will have evolved again beyond the need for bodies, they will become pure thought, the most peace loving and advanced race in the universe. I think a few million years of evil and blood shed are well worth the ultimate salvation of sentient life, don’t you?’ So ultimately the Cyberman will be good guys~ With all these questions we are either going to go mad, be inspired or run away and that’s the truth of it.

Three others things I just want to quickly put in the melting pot. A. Jodeh saying ‘This is not a grave’ when digging up the tardis gave me flashbacks to Matt saying ‘Where else would they bury me’ in ‘The name of the doctor’. B. ‘The doctor’/Jo!Doctor (whatever you’d like to call her~) falling in love with someone and then it ending terribly gave me Joan Redfern ‘Family of blood’/‘Human nature’ flashbacks and I’m not okay with it. I loved John and Joan. C. Why are ‘The Fam’ SO far away when comforting her and WHY does she crave their affection and support, yet sit so far away and distance herself from them. I mean there’s an obvious answer to this, I’m not really asking it as a question, I just find it so sad. She looked heart broken. Utterly broken and it was actually awful to see. Which also gave me flashbacks to broadchurch. Jodeh is doing a fab job. Okay I lied four things~ D. Not doctor who related, but have you red or watched The Alienist with Daniel Brühl and Luke Evans. It’s quite dark but really brilliant! Daniel Brühl needs to be in doctor who. As does Charles dance. Ok I’ll stop talking now 😂

Could be they're bringing back parts of that old abandoned 7th Doctor plotline. We already know that this is some very dirty business regarding the creation of the Timelords. The Master and the Doctor being contemporaries of Omega and his lot and predating the Timelords as we know them aren't exactly new and bold theories.

Great reaction, & review. If "Ruth" is a forgotten regeneration (John Hurt's War-Doctor), or an alternate regeneration on a divergent timeline (David Warner's 3rd-Doctor), her Doctor would have to be from, or diverged from, after the Tardis' Chameleon Circuit got locked, but before the Doctor got a sonic screwdriver, since she didn't seem to know what the device was called. To me, these were the 2 main clues (if they actually plan for this to make sense). She could of course be a completely alternate timeline.

This is my current head canon for this arc. The Timeless Child is the last leader of the Pythia, the lie of the Timeless Child is the Pythian curse of sterility (as in there was no curse, and the looms were not necessary), Rassilon and perhaps Omega as well discovered the lie and decided to keep using the looms and imposing death sentences on womb born children in order to assert their control/domination over the Time Lords, The Doctor in his incarnation as The Other found out about the lie and the cover up by the other founders of Gallifrey and tried to reveal the truth (perhaps at great personal cost), eventually knowing he couldn't reveal the truth/change anything at that time, he decided to throw himself into the looms and be regenerated at a later date when there was a chance he could bring Rassilon et al to justice and reveal the lie, he regenerated fully as the First Doctor, but whilst in the Looms other fragments of The Doctor identity established themselves across the universe or dimensions as potential regenerations prior to Hartnell (so kind of prior first Doctor regenerations but from different universes and dimensions).

Great reaction, especially to Jack. That man always brings joy and fun. As for The Other Doctor, I have my own theory. There was an episode with the 3rd Doctor where he’s mind-probed and we see loads of other faces on a screen, which we’re supposed to be past incarnations. However, none of them were faces we knew. Plus, there were a lot more than 3 of them. So, they could possibly explain now that the Doctor had this whole other Regeneration Cycle before we met him and that for some reason it was suppressed from her memory. The same goes for the Master and possibly all the Time Lords. Finally, I know I probably missed something but the woman who was hunting The Other Doctor was identified as a Gallifreyan rather than a Time Lord. So, they could possibly have future episodes show survivors who aren’t Time Lords but are still from Gallifrey (possibly non-regenerating).

Also, Whoopi Goldburg desperately wanted to play the doctor when they were looking to cast for the Paul McGann film, they should have gotten her to be the Ruth/Doctor.

I'm thinking a hidden 2nd doctor since the Tardis didn't get locked into the Police Box shape until the 1st (Hartnell) doctor landed on Earth and she didn't recognise the sonic screwdriver which arrived with the 2nd (Troughton) doctor. The obvious (and boring answer) is that Tennant didn't actually use a regeneration, or only used a partial regeneration, to save himself in Season 4. With a hidden earlier regeneration, the future doctors just accepted that was what happened and didn't think twice about it as it all "added" up. I hope that they have a more interesting story in mind though!!

I think we're going to find out that the Timelords have the ability not just to force a regeneration but to reverse one - to obliterate it from a Timelord's timeline so that it never happened. After all, they can pluck or potential regenerations from a Timelord's future like the Valeyard, so why not the ability to make it so that a regeneration and all is experiences and everything it learned never happened. I think that the Ruth Doctor is an alternative 3rd Doctor from the period he worked for the Timelord authorities andwho discovered the same secret that The Master has discovered and that's why she is on the run. When the Timelords catch up with her they will revert her back to the second Doctor and force him to regenerate into Jon Pertwees's Doctor instead of this incarnation - wiping her from the Doctor's personal timestream (which is why Clara never saw her).

Because if it turns out that this doctor is withing Our Doctor's timeline, it would mess with everything we've come to accept as the lore of Doctor Who. And this Ruth/Doctor cant be before Hartnell, because her tardis was a police box too. And we know that Hartnell stole that tardis. We saw him do it. I've watched this episode abridged quite a few times through reactions. During my previous view I began to have the beginnings of a notion / extremely vague and not fully formed or thought out theory. If The Doctor is timeless child. But not the only one. A Gallifreyan cloning experiment. "Everything you think you know is a lie." The Master found out about his his/her friend and burnt it all down as revenge.... The Master could be version of same experiment gone seriously wrong. These creations were developed as a weapon but have the tendency to "RUN!" by their very nature. So they are hunted by their creators. I should say, I don't think is crazy notion has much chance of being close to the truth. Because if The Doctor isn't unique this might peeve quite a few fans.

I strongly suspect we're dealing with a multiverse here. I think we've been set up for it in previous episodes. ('Seven Earths?') I think it's a RTD/Moffat style trick of making it look like you're about to retcon the entire show, but then it turns out you're just playing around the edges of the back story. A big entertaining WTF audience troll, basically. But it could turn out to be a Cartmel Masterplan/Brain of Morbius thing and, like you, I'm not sure how I'd feel about that. We'll see. I’m thinking this is actual Dr. #3. It makes sense. On the run form the TimeLords.... #2 goes all fuzzy in regeneration. Gap. #3 falls out of theTARDIS the next season. It could very well be like in the RTD era, the Army of Ghosts Episode featured the cyberman as ghosts coming from another universe with the help of the daleks through the use of a void ship. Since Spyfall featured Ghosts,these could very well be Cyberman that show up in the finale together with the daleks. I love the idea of a pre-Hartnell incarnation that is "re-loomed" into the First Doctor like the Cartmel Masterplan. But if it is, Ruth shouldn't be called "Doctor" or have a police box TARDIS. Ruth is the doctor 1.5 (2 Actually) but the memory of her existence is whipped from Jodi and the other 11 regenerations minds by the timelords, she is either the timeless child or found out the timelords were doing something shady making them force her to regenerate and whipping their minds of ruth's regeneration. You can figure out where she fits in time because 2 was the first doctor to use a sonic which she did not recognize and 1 stole the tardis with Susan making it a police box, and she still calls it a ship.

I think there is trickery here. One theory I have is that they have met because something is wrong with time. Maybe the timelords collapsed a whole period of time as if it hadn't happened. Maybe the Doctor and other timelords had their past reversed like Margaret the Slitheen becoming an egg. There may be some tragic twist like this period becomes accessible to the Doctor again before once more collapsing..and Gallifrey being restored.

A bit of a long comment... So with the whole Doctor thing first of all there isn’t really such a thing as Cannon in Doctor Who. That aside this Doctor could be like you said multiverse or mind whip. Another option is that it’s a regeneration between 2 & 3 who worked for the Celestial Intervention Agency as some fans used to speculate about (can’t really be pre 1st Doctor as the TARDIS didn’t get stuck in its shape pre Unearthly Child). Mind you fans in the 70’s thought that some of faces seen in Brain Of Morbius where Doctors pre 1st, so president has been set (oh and pre time war Doctors would use weapons when pushed to the limit, besides this doctor made the gun back fire which is what 13 threatened to do earlier in the episode)
