The inflections are all off. The farewell speech to Susan was subdued and sad, missing the way Hartnell played it. I mean, it wasn't horiffic, but... it wasn't that close, either.
@Elricwulf7 жыл бұрын
Sorry, all I hear is his unwelcoming portrayal of his bitter old curmudgeon Game of Thrones character Walder Frey. I don't hear any trace of William Hartnell's Doctor in there. Maybe he was the closest facsimile they could find and he probably did the best job considering, but to say he nailed it or that he was perfect is exaggerating quite a bit. William Hartnell played it somewhat aloof and condescending at times, but he never came off as bitter and mean spirited the way David Bradley does.
@Lumibear.6 жыл бұрын
Mister Groove - I think he has way less exaggerated inflections, Hartnell was rather intense, they spent a lot of time trying to soften him though so in some ways Bradley’s performance is more how he wanted to be.

I like Bradley and am glad he's returning to the part, but where's the First Doctor's little half grin while speaking, all the theatrical facial expressions, the business he does with his hands and fidgety fingers, his greater mobility and physicality, his periodic imperiousness and arrogance, his silly giggling, his frequent "hmm?", and foremost the charm and whimsy of the character? I appreciate that Bradley for the most part more or less looks and sounds similar to Bill Hartnell, but he seems to still be missing a lot of the heart of his character. There was something magical and likeable behind the character's gruffness that Bradley still needs to fully find and I hope he does.

Is it possible Susan may be in the Christmas Special though
@SceneComparisons7 жыл бұрын
nobody would be perfect bradley is the next best thing if you accept the premise that the first doctor is back, you have to accept the new actor for what it is and just enjoy the nod to the first doctor and be happy ;)

I doubt Susan would be in it. Ben and Polly are a chance, but I dunno if they could even do that. I do wish Michael Craze hadn't fallen down those stairs though. Would've been great for him to see all these new episodes. ='-(

Well said! I think the difference is more evident to those of us that were pre-existing Hartnell fans, and pick up on the mannerisms and inflections that he infuses the part with.
@alfredjohnson26473 жыл бұрын
Of the four, I think the most identical resemblance is Jemma Powell as Jacqueline Hill (especially in black and white), right down to the voice. David Bradley looks like Hartnell, but the real Hartnell was much shorter and played the First Doctor with a distinctly soupy-sounding Edwardian public school voice.

Well, he plays the part of William Hartnell with all his heart and soul in this docudrama. When it comes to his performance as the 1st Doctor however he is very flat and doesn't give it any of the wonderful subtleties that Hartnell did. He did a much better job in the Twice Upon a Time, unfortunately they had him playing it very sexist there, so it still wasn't a true seeming version of the 1st Doctor. Oh well. At least he stepped up his game playing the 1st Doctor 2nd time out.

David Bradley played a good William Hartnell, but he wasn't very good as the First Doctor. His delivery and performance were flat, like he was just reciting the lines instead of actually playing the character.
@Kryojenix7 жыл бұрын
I think that was deliberate. Hopefully he'll be better at Christmas - but it's a massive call to ask one actor to represent a character in the same style that a previous actor did. That's why Doctor Who has mostly avoided it.
@UltimateHammerBro7 жыл бұрын
I thought it was intentional. They made the in-character delivery flatter to better distinguish it from the actor's delivery.
@UltimateHammerBro7 жыл бұрын
Have you ever seen any comic book where the characters read a comic book? Don't the pictures in the "comic book-within-comic book" tend to be cruder or more cartoonish than the art in the actual story? It's a way of telling apart what's supposed to be a drawing in-universe and what isn't. This could be a similar case. As a way of telling apart what's acting in-universe (i.e. Bradley playing Hartnell playing The Doctor) and what isn't (i.e. Bradley playing Hartnell), the in-universe acting is made flatter than it actually was. Otherwise, there may not be much difference between Bradley's Hartnell and Bradley's Hartnell's Doctor.

I believe that was very much intentional, I view this as David Bradley playing William Hartnell playing The Doctor, instead of David Bradley playing The Doctor And in my opinion this was a good decision, and this immerses me more to the idea that that is William Hartnell playing The Doctor, and not David Bradley, because, and I apologise for redundancy, what we are seeing is David Bradley portraying William Hartnell portraying The Doctor, and not David Bradley's portrayal of The 1st Doctor
