6 didn't regenerate that way, in "The Sixth Doctor: The Last Adventure" it was revealed that the cause of his regeneration, was concentrated beams of radiation being shot at the TARDIS by the Rani, it only knocked Mel unconscious but it killed 6 because the radiation was deadly to Time Lords

I like this episode for the amount of varied dialogue that the daleks have. Especially that scene where two of them slag off their boss behind their back in the sewers. Also their music in this story is on point, but never returns sadly. It's a distorted and perverted version of their regular theme, representative of how they are in this episode. Any dalek story where more than 70% of their is something other than "EXTERMINATE" is good with me :)

Me too, I grew up with this season, only saw bits and pieces of the earlier seasons, Doctor and Martha were my favorite, and despite all the fan hate for this season I can’t bring myself to dislike them, they’re super entertaining and fun still to this day and have a lot of interesting ideas. Its a shame that the writers sorta ruined Martha’s character with all the unrequited love bs and rebounding from Rose, she should’ve been able to exist on her own, like Donna did

I'm really glad you guys liked this episode. :D It gets a lot of flack (and I mean... a lot. Poor writer was brought to tears.) but I think there are some fun stuff in there. It's not one of my favorites, but you guys made me appreciate it a bit more. It's so interesting to re-evaluate these episodes with new eyes and new opinions, which isn't constantly surrounded by the fandom. Dalec Sec was, in hindsight, a pretty great character. I find myself liking him more and more every rewatch I do. And just the overall cast is really cool, the message is nice, the morals... Yeah. I get the issues people had with it, but I think it doesn't deserve as bad of a rep as it has. Either way, really enjoying these reactions, especially when it makes me take a double take on episodes I haven't thought much about before. :) Also, I love how much Eric gets onboard with the Daleks and their "scary" factor. That's rare to see, and I love it. Also, I see you there with your Star Trek reference there, Lono. I see you.

I might have misquoted on the tear thing though, but this is from RTD's The Writer's Tale, in which he has a bunch of notes and stuff that he was writing as he was making the show: "It’s those internet message boards. The forums. They destroy writers. This job is full of doubts already, but now there’s a whole new level of fear, shouting at us. It is now a writer’s job, like it or not, to put up with it. It’s like when Helen Raynor went on Outpost Gallifrey last month and read the reviews of her two Dalek episodes. She said that she was, literally, shaking afterwards. Like she’d been physically assaulted. I’m not exaggerating. She said it was like being in a pub when a fight breaks out next to you. I had to spend two hours on the phone to her, talking her out of it, convincing her that of course she can write, that we do need her and want her. That bastard internet voice gets into writers’ heads and destabilises them massively." I guess people sometimes tend to forget writers' are people, and not everyone is ready for the onslaught of comments that internet fandom brings, especially back in 2007 when they weren't as used to it. I know there's the whole thing about building thick skin and so on, but, sometimes things get to you. :/

I actually found this episode was creative for what it was when I first watched it. Not the most amazing work, but it's an interesting Dalek episode idea that had a lot of people blowing this out of proportion because it's what usually happens with the more underrated stories. Actually, series 3 quality was fairly balanced overall. Even the Lazarus Experiment gets a lot of flack and it's not that bad for a Lazarus concept, just the CGI for the most part, but Doctor Who was always more about the story, the characters or the message, rather than the CGI involved and even that gets better each year. Series 2 has amazing episodes too, but the balance is a bit offset in that case.

The writer was brought to tears? Holy crap. This is honestly one of my favourite episodes, and the hybrid version of Sec is one of my favourite characters. I know the episode and various things about it has its faults, but I've always thought the character had a lot of potential and was sadly killed off way too quickly. And the more I watch it again, the more little details become noticeable. And considering how much of a pain the costume was for Eric Loren (heavy makeup/mask that meant he had to sit down a lot, being unable to hear properly over the mechanical parts, people not actually realising it was him under the costume etc) I have a lot of respect for the dude.

+TheKarlOshaughnessy constructively criticising something doesn't mean shouting mindless abuse at the internet. Yes, sure, people will have to learn how to deal with bad reviews, because every writer will get them, but the stuff she got thrown at her was far beyond that - very few people, at least out of the people I'd consider decent - would walk up to a writer in person and say the shit people said about her (and not just her writing, but that too). Besides, saying the writing was shit seems like you're speaking very objectively. I'm not the biggest fan of these two episodes, but there are people out there who like them, like the ideas and such. I never found the writing and dialogue in particular to have been the issue with this episode, as much as the execution.

hmmmm... I hated these episodes the first time I watched them. Now they're more than tolerable. Almost... enjoyable. How strange. Maybe I'm older. (Also I appreciate Helen Raynor's Torchwood episodes Ghost Machine and To the Last Man so I might look at these differently) I never realized Ten had repeated encounters with radiation... just escaped me... So much radiation... Genesis of the Daleks would be a great choice for a Classic episode (Four with Sarah and Harry!) ... they'll see Kaleds and Thals and all that...

What I hate the most about this episode is how the Doctor is ok with helping out the Daleks after they admitted to kidnapping and murdering hundreds of people! The pig henchmen were stupid. There is no reason for them to exist. It's down right lazy to get physics right. Radiation does not look, act or move like lightning! And how does being hit by lightning transfer your DNA?! And the whole thing with Laszlo is like a repeat of the girl from Love & Monsters. He is doomed to live his life looking like a monster amongst with homeless people. Not the worst episode ever. Still pretty bad. Definitely worst Dalek episodes ever.

Asylum barely classifies as a dalek episode. Though you're right, it is the worst dalek episode, and indeed the worst episode of the entire new series. Also why do people insist on capitalising the names of alien species. We aren't Humans are we? We're just humans. Lions are lions and tigers are tigers. We don't capitalise them, why should it be different for aliens?

because that is who the doctor is. for the 1st time in his life he saw something in the daleks he had never seen before. he was angery at what the daleks had done but he can't change that. what he can do is save lives int he future. by letting the daleks do this. Sec felt apologetic about the act. and he wanted to redeem the daleks. the doctor wanted that too. plus have you seen destiny of the daleks. horrific
