“This Harold Saxon again? He sounds familiar.” Yes, he’s been mentioned once or twice! The actor Mark Gatiss plays Professor Lazarus in this story. Gatiss is an actor/writer/producer and director, probably best remembered for playing a number of different roles in a darkly satirical British TV comedy programme called The League of Gentlemen. Gatiss was (and still is), a huge Doctor Who fan, having grown up with the programme during the third Doctor’s era (1970 - 1974). After the classic series of Doctor Who (1963 - 1989) was cancelled in 1989, Gatiss was just one of many fans who would write original Doctor Who stories as novels, in an attempt to keep fandom and the show’s legacy going, eternally hopeful that the show might be brought back one day. When the BBC announced the show’s return in 2004, the new series show runner and head writer, Russell T. Davies (also a big fan of classic Who) asked Gatiss if he would be interested in writing for the new series, to which he replied that he would, and from those initial discussions came the story idea for “The Unquiet Dead,” the Charles Dickens story in season 1. Gatiss went on from writing that story to write “The Idiots Lantern” story in season 2 and has gone on to write other future NuWho TV stories as well. He appears again as an actor in the show later on in the NuWho run, though neither this story nor his appearance in the next Who story was written by him.

Hi Angela, love Xander's work with the Dalek subtitles! ;) No spoilers, but just to say when Season 3 aired, we'd already seen the full first season of Torchwood - with its depiction of what that organisation was like *after* the Battle of Canary Wharf when Rose and her family were lost to the parallel universe - and after most of Torchwood's staff had been wiped out by the Daleks and Cybermen. It might be worth reading a brief synopsis (headlines only) of Torchwood Season 1 in case Torchwood is referred to in the main show again. As I'm sure many people have said, that's Mark Gatiss as Lazarus, who wrote The Unquiet Dead and The Idiot's Lantern as well as further occasional stories for the next two Doctors. I always struggled with this episode because of the special effects, but it's good to see the show have something more profound to say about humanity and our relationship with aging. And yes, you have heard and seen the name Harold Saxon before. The name is very subtly woven into a few stories...

The dormant DNA concept is pretty similar to something from an old Star Trek TNG episode, Genesis. In that episode, Picard and Data come back to the Enterprise to find that in their absence, an alien virus has activated the crew's latent genetics and made them essentially devolve into ancestor species. Worf the Klingon becomes a vicious, acid-spitting predator, Troi the half-Betazoid becomes an amphibian and retreats to her bathtub, Riker becomes a big hairy apeman, Picard begins to devolve into a timid marmoset-like thing, for some reason the human Reg Barclay turns into a spider. Not a particularly loved episode, but I think it won an award for makeup.

@@Ragnarok345 Wait SPOILER Just in case: first, it's important for The Doctor and Martha relationship, becaue it shifts completely after that. If you don't see this episode and jump directly, you can't understand why The Doctor acts differently towards Martha or why something changed between the two. Secondly, yes of course the Lazarus part is a small thing in the overal big finale, but each part of the mystery box counts or it wouldn't be important to threw around hints about Saxon. And over all the episodes, this and the next one (ironically the weaker ones) the Saxon lore is heavier and important for the finale. Important in the sense that it doesn't seem like it's coming from nowhere, but it was built up through the episodes. Then we can talk about IF it was hinted well or not... I preferred the Bad Wolf more than Torchwood in the second and Saxon in the third for example, but in any case it's important at least to give consistency.

Traditional Doctor Who was a "kids" program. Most Modern Who TV episodes are rated PG, so are considered suitable for children over 8 years old. While also being more targeted at an adult audience. The special effects should be judged in that context. Enough to make your kids hide behind the sofa, but not enough to traumatise them. So they have a certain cartoonish aspect going on.
@andrewroberts299
@andrewroberts299 8 сағат бұрын
Classic Doctor Who was never seen by the BBC as being a “kids programme.” It was made then (and was until the recent Disney deal) by the BBC’s prestigious Drama Department, and not their Children’s Department. Big distinction. Doctor Who was and still is a family show, for ages 5 to 95. That’s one of its many strengths and why it’s lasted for so long (on and off for 61 years!)
@barkingmonkee
@barkingmonkee 3 сағат бұрын
While you're correct, I always felt that the fact it's a "kids" show (classic and current) is DW's superpower. It frees the show to not take itself too seriously, which sets it apart from 90% of TV sci-fi. I **love** me some trek, but you'd never find Kirk, Picard or Janeway fighting Victorian gas-alien-ghosts alongside Charles Dickens to save the Earth. It just unlocks zany creative potential you don't otherwise find in popular SF TV.

For a bit of background, I remember watching the very first episode of Doctor Who, and hiding behind the sofa during the black & white era. I watched it regularly until the 1970s, when I had a weekend job working in a supermarket until 8:00pm on a Saturday. This was because Doctor Who was broadcast on Saturday early evening, around the same timeslot as "The Magic Roundabout" during the week. Back then, children were assumed to be going to bed between around 7:00pm and the 9 o'clock watershed. People of my generation will have many memories of arguing with their parents on a Saturday night, because their parents thought that all Sci Fi stuff on TV like Doctor Who was "kid's stuff". Once I lost control of the channel changer on a Saturday night, I never got it back.

I can't remember where I saw it, but there was a fan alt timeline idea where Martha dies in this episode, and Tish joins the Doctor because she wants to help save people to honour Martha. She would be less competent and would struggle with bravery, but in one of the upcoming stories she would come into her own and realise she has to move on from the Doctor because there are people she needs to help here and now. The amount you were worrying about Tish dying I figured I'd bring up this interesting concept, even if I think I prefer what we got.

If the writers and showrunners had something planned with DNA and the season that is not known but changing ones self is a typical Sci Fi trope. Dr. Who is a show that has since the 1960s is usually stuck on typical Sci Fi tropes. I think that is the nature of British Sci Fi. It is hard to get away from the basic Sci Fi ideas of the 1950 and 1960s because it really defines a genre. "How we better ourselves and the consequences" is just something baked into Sci Fi writing. So it tends to just be part of so many stories.

Finally halfway through. After this the other episodes are the strongest in the whole NewWho IMHO. Just for yout to follow the track: you've heard or read about Saxon in these episodes: Love&Monster (season 2: on the paper, Saxon was winning the election); in The Runaway bride (Special: Saxon gave the order to shoot down the ship); in Smith&Jones (1 episode season 3: there is a "vote for Saxon" poster) and now in the Lazarus Experiment (6 episode season 3: Saxon helped financing the experiment and his man talked with Martha's mother).

2:56 The Doctor has always (well after the first 2 original Doctors at least) selected female companions that were capable & even had competent, dangerous female adversaries before women's rights became a big thing. Doctor Who has always been a bit more forward leaning than many shows of its (original) time by including coloured & LGBT characters (although not blatantly obvious or stereotyped) which is one of the factors that made it last so long. 14:14 People think immortality would be a gift but it is really a curse because eventually you have done, experienced & said everything & then there is no truly new experiences left, just repeats. 15:47 I hope she liked her olive.

You've heard Saxon once before this episode. Martha's first episode, Oliver the med student was being interviewed and said this: "I looked out at the surface of the moon. I saw the Earth, suspended in space, and it all just proves Mister Saxon right. We're not alone in the universe. There's life out there. Wild and extraordinary life." With this episode in mind, clearly they're making a point with the Saxon stuff. 😊 The guy playing Lazarus though! That's Mark Gatiss. He wrote Unquiet Dead (season 1), Idiot's Lantern (season 2), and 7 later episodes. He also appears in other episodes, either under prosthetics or voice only. And in audio dramas. I don't care for his writing, but I commend his level of nerdiness about Doctor Who. 😂 This episode? Eh. I appreciate seeing Martha's family, and its place in the arc - but as a whole, I'm ambivalent. However, from here on, next ep is decent, and then I adore every single episode for a long time, so I'm SO ready to see your upcoming reactions! ❤❤🟦 (two hearts, blue box)

Yeeeahhh, the late 2000s TV CGI just doesn't hold up sometime lol. Overall I enjoy this episode, but its not my favorite of S3. Potential spolier but not really?: . . . . . . The guy from the parallel Earth you're thinking of that created the Cybermen is John Lumic, not Harold Saxon.

I saw David Tennant in 'Macbeth' last night (absolutely brilliant, and in a kilt, by the way, Angela 😜), and I realised as I watched this, I've now seen all three major protagonists in the flesh - David, Freema and Mark. The monster is terrible but the story's good, Mark Gatiss is great, and the subplot of Saxon rumbles along. Can't wait.

As you may have guessed, the reason that Lazarus didn't revert back to his original aged form after the incident with the machine was that he wasn't actually dead. Only at the end of the episode did it happen.

I see the CGI - but for the time and the budget... It's fine, it moves the story along, and it's not completely season 1, ya know? I've commented before about the Dalek story arc in this season, and I agree - not my favorite. My favorite New Who threat is yet to come, but... no Spoilers! Martha is a good strong companion, but I think all companions need to be strong in some way, otherwise the Doctor probably wouldn't be interested in the first place. I think I need to re-watch Torchwood - unless you're going to do it, in which case I'll wait.

Your reaction to the... new "Human" was worth the build-up. :) Doctor Who is good a "seeding" things. You noticed the name "Saxon" and you were supposed to, they seeded the word. You don't know as much as you will come to, and that is the point. You are supposed to pay attention when that comes up.
