Fun fact about whether Russell rewrote 42: he states in The Writer’s Tale that he never rewrites scripts from Steven Moffat, Matthew Graham, Stephen Greenhorn and Chris Chibnall, so presumably, all of 42 is Chris’ own work.

RTD didn't rewrite episodes by writers who were showrunners (Moffatt, Chibnall and Stephen Greenhorn) - they would get notes and rewrite things themselves - so it's all Chibnall. I remember how exciting the inserts of the Saxon story felt at the time - in terms of series arc, the series 3 one really felt like it was building to something great. 42 is solid and has an energy and focus even if slightly clunky. It has a sense of fun that Chibnall's own era doesn't have.

19:05 I briefly got to help colour a few shots for one of the Hancock episodes, and like Matt said some people were very against the idea of adding colour. But I think it's an interesting experiment - I imagine if I saw An Unearthly Child as a kid in colour, I might have jumped into 60s episodes sooner, because I was so used to seeing modern-day television in colour that I associated black and white as "old". But I do get why people prefer to leave things as they were made.

Interesting about The Satan Pit discussion as this episode was originally planned to be a sequel to that story with all the surviving characters in it as well as the Ood. Russel said he wanted Chibnall to write it when he finished his work in Torchwood but by that point they had ran out of money and he asked him to rework it into something ‘entirely set in corridors’ and they devised the real time idea for the episode to give it something to stand out in the TV guides.

You should check out the dvd commentary for 42 it's with RTD and chibnall and they talk about how it was written together. Found it really interesting

I always find 42 an fine story. Doesn’t really stand out for me but i will admit Tennent is brilliant in this story, when he gets temporary possessed by the sun it’s chilling. I vaguely remember a friend of mine use to be scared of this story

"42" is so thoroughly alright that it goes into one ear and out of the other. Not really sure if it would have been better received if it had been placed earlier in the season. I think it would have needed to be in a fairly weak season to be better regarded, and even you'd hear talk like "This season was so weak that something like '42' managed to pass as a highlight".
