Doctor Who legend William Russell has passed away at the age of 99, according to reports.
The actor gained fame in 1956 in the ITV series The Adventures of Sir Lancelot, before his most notable role as Ian Chesterton alongside William Hartnell in Doctor Who, from the show's first episode until 1965.
Russell also appeared in The Great Escape, the 1978 film Superman, and as Ted Sullivan in Coronation Street.

Say what you want about Chibnall, but the fact that he gave us one last return of Ian Chesterton before Russell's passing is something I will forever be grateful for.

@@timrob12 I agree that it's a matter of opinion, and I also agree in that personally, I hugely enjoyed Chibnall Who. Flux was my favourite season since the 70s. But I don't agree people should "say what they want about him". People have said some truly awful things about him and I feel truly sorry for the man.

@@fredh1720 Yes, true. People have been seriously overreacting. Like, yes, I can see faults with that era (like too many things at once happening), but it's nowhere as bad as people make it out to be. Certainly the fact that people say "it killed the show" is just utter nonsense.

He was actually the first hero in Doctor Who with the Doctor himself more of an anti hero. Let's not forget that Ian prevented the Doctor from harming a primitive human in one of the very earliest episodes. Of course, the moral fortitude he and Barbara showed throughout their adventures with the original Doctor, eventually changed him for the better. That's why the characters of Ian Chesterton and Barbara Wright are so important. R.I.P. William Russell.

This is a really rough loss. Russ was such an integral part of Doctor Who and he and Ian leave behind a massive legacy. It’s been wonderful going so many years knowing that one of the all-time greats was still with us. He’s very very missed, but I’m glad for his sake that he can rest now and reunite with family and loved ones. I’d like to think that Bill, Jackie, and Verity have thrown a little party of sorts.

How I agree. No one goes on forever and, being in his nineties we were aware we could lose him anytime now but, knowing he was still here was indeed, very comforting. Probably because he was a link to the past and to the very beginning of Doctor Who. Yes, he will be missed, not just for his connection to Dr. Who but also because he always came across as a decent and very likable gentleman in all the interviews he gave.

It's so sad that we lost another from the beginning of Doctor Who, by that round of applause it's without doubt of how loved him and the character of Ian was. Forever grateful that he returned to the show briefly in 2022 (and earned himself a Guinness World Record in the process!). R.I.P. William Russell.

Hopefully he'll be in Heaven with the other people that he worked with, plus those that he didn't sitting back watching ALL of the old episodes including the missing ones (after all God is fully capable of remaking them atom by atom like He does everything else up there) with a pint of beer in a pub. Just remember to save some chips for me, I hear that they are better than the ones that we have to make do with down here... God bless you😊❤

I'm going to watch 'The Rescue' 'The Romans' and 'The Web Planet' as both a tribute and to see the lovely Maureen O'brien as Vicki, to cheer myself up. Hence I like to call those 3 stories the 'Vicki Begins her exciting adventure in Space and Time Trilogy'. But first I must do some chores before I set off to the planet Dido in order to save a stranded young lady....

Actually I've changed my mind and I am going to listen to his reading of 'Doctor Who in an Exciting Adventure with the Daleks' instead as I feel that it would be a better tribute because whenever I listen to it I feel as though I'm in the same room with an aged (maybe dying) Ian at my side talking to me about his adventures with 'Dr Who' and 'Susan English' along with Barbara Wright when he was a young man in the Spaceship 'Tardis' going on adventures far beyond his native Earth.

Had been thinking the same thing, it was mentioned on their website but no mention at all on the broadcast news. I wondered whether it might have been due to the news being dominated by coverage of D-Day's 80th anniversary, but even so, they still felt that "Gail Platt" leaving Coronation Street was more important news to report.
