Ruby being adopted is pretty standard for new Who. Most main companions have lost at least one parent: Rose: Father died, Martha: father walked out, Donna: father died, Amy: parents died and adopted, Clara: mother died, Bill: mother died and adopted, Ryan: mother died, father walked out and adoptive grandmother died. I think Yaz is the only one with both parents alive and living together.

For the sake of thoroughness (lord knows DW fans are nerds about nitty-gritty details lol), it wasn't as if Martha's dad was completely absent from the show like one of the parents who died, he was just separated from Martha's mum so the dynamic was a bit different. Also, Dan's parents are both still alive, and Amy's were too after the universe's reset at the end of s5. Also, the tradition of companions being orphaned or only having one parent goes back well before NuWho - Vicki Pallister was the very new first companion introduced after the show began (in season 2, after Susan's departure but before Ian and Barbara left), and the death of her only living parent was a key reason why she ended up with the Doctor. Now, admittedly, classic companions often didn't see their families talked about as much as modern companions, but when it did come up, it was often a similar situation. Victoria Waterfield, Nyssa of Traken, and Sarah Jane Smith are all orphans (the first two both losing her remaining in the story that led her to join the Doctor like Vicki, while Sarah Jane was raised by her aunt, a backstory that got explored a lot in the Sarah Jane Adventures). Others were estranged from family like Ace, and still more were aliens or people from other time periods who weren't brought up in a Western-style nuclear family, like Zoe and Romana. The modern series does more to explore the connections to home that companions still have, but it has always made sense with this kind of show to have characters who are missing some of the ties that the average person does, since that's the sort of person who would be more willing to leave everything behind to travel space and time with no guarantee of ever making it home.

I always thought it didn't work on wood because TARDISes were grown, not made, and the TARDIS is plant or tree-like. And because the TARDIS usually is used to craft a sonic its sort of a defense mechanism. Anyhow, that's my little headcanon.

I do also feel that it might be really, _really_ important to mention The Master, as we got that tease that they might be returning in the future during the episode where he defeated The Toymaker. The Master is a fellow time-lord whom the Doctor has known since childhood. The Master is absolutely _mad_ and nearly always a villain. Because of their history, there's a small chance The Master might come back as an ally, but certainly not a character to readily trust.

No. The psychic paper does NOT show the target what the doctor wants them to see. The paper shows them what they would need to see to let the doctor do what they want to do. The running gag in new who is that this is often very different than what the doctor would expect and the doctor usually doesn't find out what it shows until the other person actually told them what it says

Technically it’s sort of both. The psychic paper will show them roughly what the doctor wants but also what they expect to see. So the doctor will be like “health and safety” and when flashing the paper they will see something along those lines.

@@stumbling_ also, if someone isn’t familiar with the psychic paper, it’s just easier to understand “it shows them what I want them to see” rather than “it shows them what I need them to see but that’s not necessarily what I want them to see and it sometimes takes a while to update itself to the new regeneration, especially if the last regeneration was a different gender, oh and it doesn’t work on some people who just see it blank when I wave it in their face” Edit: yes, I know Ellie acknowledges that it doesn’t work on everyone

We did not first meet Kate Lethbridge-Stewart in 2012, because The Power of Three was not her first appearance. The character first appeared, along with her father played by Nicholas Courtney, Lis Sladen as Sarah Jane and Debbie Watling as Victoria, in the video spinoff Downtime in 1995. At the time, she was played by Beverly Cressman, but she was a lot younger.

Well said! You beat me to it by 30 minutes or so. The presenters of this channel have set themselves up as the experts on Doctor Who. They forget that there are many of us who have been watching Doctor Who for the entirety of its history and are very well versed in the whole shebang. Many would counter with saying “well this wasn’t meant for you” and I would accept that but the preachy “we know more than you” attitude is getting very tiresome. So is the way they refuse to apply any kind of critical approach is lacking in any kind of legitimacy. They refuse to examine the current state of the show with any kind of honesty. So far as they are concerned, they accept any and all nonsense from the showrunner, or actors, at face value & everything they are told is greeted with stupid whoops and hollers. I just wish they would stop talking down to us and realise that maybe, just maybe, there are many, many knowledgeable Doctor Who fans out here who are sick of their sugary sweet acceptance of this appalling ‘woke’ era of what once was a magnificent show!

The original actors playing their established roles from the main show, how can that possibly not be considered canon? The only reason I can see for it not being included is that not many fans even know of its existence & when it gets mentioned many self professed fans just give a blank look. No, sorry, “Downtime” should definitely be considered as canon, in fact it should be celebrated due to it being the first appearance of Kate Stewart as you rightly point out.

Anyone see Ncuti Gatwa on Match Of The Day? The opening theme song was playing and it kept being interrupted by the TARDIS taking us through different eras of MOTD. Then it took us to a version where Ncuti's Doctor was ON the show opposite Alan Shearer (the presenter). It SERIOUSLY adds weight to Doctor Who being a TV show within itself

My thoughts on why 10 was also 14, is this. Donna 'needed' someone to recognise. So, as she knew 10, that helped jog her memories so the story could play out as it has. If 14 had been someone else, she may not have known who they were.

I'm always annoyed when people say "The Doctor Never went back for Susan" without specifying "on TV." There have been a series of 8th Doctor stories on audio with Carol Ann Ford reprising her role as Susan. Leaving out even a wink and a nod to the expanded universe is kinda, to me anyway, craping on the work of the actor who continues to play the role from time to time.

I'm just going to point out (AGAIN) that because the Doctor time travels there has always been more than one Doctor floating around at the same time. For instance nothing really says that the Second Doctor and the Sixth Doctor might not run into one another in 1985 for instance, aside from the occasional mumblings that the Time Lords don't like the idea, and that maybe they made it so the TARDISes themselves made the prospect harder just to avoid any inconvenient 'grandfather paradoxes' that might change all of Time Lord history. That is to say that the Doctor has a time machine that can travel all through space and time, and if they really wanted to, I'm sure they could find a way to visit their first self (that we the audience met at least) and help with that initial Cybermen invasion from Mondas back in what was the future of 1986. Technically, they all exist side by side, not just the 14th and 15th Doctors.

Thank you, thank you, thank you 😃 I’ve been trying to explain this often overlooked fact for so many, many years. I had to try again recently because of RTD’s lame bi-regeneration he put the 14th Doctor through. A person I was chatting to didn’t understand how there could be 2 Doctors at the same time. I tried to explain that because of time travel, any of the past or future Doctors could appear at any location and at any time during the entire existence of the Universe. This means, of course, that if you are ever lucky enough to meet the TARDIS one day there can be no guarantee which Doctor would emerge - it wouldn’t necessarily be the one who is currently on TV. Thank you for confirming this obvious consequence of being a time traveller.

@@chrisdooster748 Yeah, I kinda think it's the case that the current creative team want to come up with a sort of blanket explanation for why the Doctor's human actors look older when they return to do guest spots. Maybe. I'm not actually sure. I will give Chris Chibnall this, he did reintroduce some mystery into the show's titular character while still sticking to established if a bit round robin-ish show canon _(Brain of Mobius, Remembrance of the Daleks, et al),_ so I don't mind a _little_ zaniness with regeneration. We already kinda had that from RTD with the 10th Doctor and Donna and his human clone in Pete's World.

Unfortunately the Tennant "specials" had relatively low figures as well. Clearly bigeneration isn't needed to explain the multiple times the Doctors have met themselves... we've literally just had 13 meeting the Fugitive, and the Time Lords themselves proved the "Law" could be broken in times of great peril.

Actually, in Day of the Doctor, the Sonic Screwdriver should be able to work on wood. In fact, in 11's final episode, there's a moment where he comes across a wooden Cyberman and tricked it with the Sonic not working on wood DESPITE technically being able by that point. What if Ruby is actually the Doctor's granddaughter? Or maybe GREAT granddaughter.

First, while the war doctor starts an analysis of the door to disintegrate it, we never find out if it was actually possible. Clare opens the door as soon as 11 realizes the scan is complete. Second, you have the wooden cyberman backwards. The cyberman doesn't know it doesn't work on wood, so when the doctor shows that he sent a signal to reverse its weapon, it accepts it as truthful and rotates its weapon only to fire at itself. The doctor even states afterwards that he should have mentioned it didn't work on wood.

If the Doctor didn't specifically activate the "wood disintegration" feature, anything else could potentially not work. So technically, it could be argued that the signal that the Doctor sent to the wooden cyberman to reverse it's weapon wouldn't have worked on wood.

TARDIS is an English acronym. Gallifreyans do not speak English most of the time. Susan came up with the name, entered it into the TARDIS database, and the next time the doctor visited Gallifrey (and fiddled around with The Matrix for a bit, and also served as President for over 4 hours) that got uploaded as the english translation of the name (which had previously translated as "capsule").

When she first sees the TARDIS blocking the street she is complaining that another neighbour must have put it there, and doesn't seem to recognise it. Honestly I’ve been putting the new season, series… on the back burner. As soon as Ruby was seen as a mysterious orphan character and the whole, “only a timelady would understand this power” thing took place. My mind is rushing to Ruby being the doctor. And even if not, her character is like 18-19 and the doctor is for all we know millions of years old. I get no matter what there will be an “age gap” but come on.

I also think that 14 will be working behind the scenes to reset the universe to before he invoked the myth and he will end up dying/vanishing in season two and that will also reset the doctor so that the timeless child will have never happened.

I am honestly slightly surprised that revisiting the Doctor's granddaughter never happened. Seems like it could be the plot of a decent episode. Edit: The surprise I have was more for her lack of a main series appearance. I would be far more worried if she didn't show up in the extended whoniverse after her initial departure from the show like mentioned in the replies to my comment.

She came back in the Five Doctors in the 80's and was in the crossover charity special, Dimensions in Time, as well. Susan has returned many times in other media too. Ellie's writers are very young and probably haven't watched as much Who as us old timers. XD

It kinda got retconned in Day of the Doctor though (yeah it still happened but ultimately neither the Daleks nor the Timelords went extinct so there's little real consequence) so I doubt it'll be that plot relevant in the coming seasons.

It's much less relevant now though, seeing as Gallifrey was saved and then destroyed in a completely different hand-wavey way. If they're going to talk about Gallifrey or Time Lords being gone, they'll maybe only barely mention the Time War (which was retconned over half of the Doctor's lifetime ago) and then move on to explain that it was the Master that destroyed them.
