Happy New Year! With The Doctor stuck in space jail and a new breed of Daleks on the prowl, how will Captain Jack and Team TARDIS save the day? Did Revolution of the Daleks live up to the hype, or did we kick off 2021 with a dud? Ups & Downs is back! #DoctorWho #RevolutionOfTheDaleks #UpsAndDowns

I don't like how the Doctor, standing 3 feet away from her TIME MACHINE, says 'Ahh there's no time to think!" at the end there. I mean.. they could take a 3 week... month.. YEAR hiatus and rematerialize one minute later. Eleventh Hour did this whole 'no tardis, no screwdriver, no time to think' really well because there was a reason behind that obstacle. But the biggest problem I've had with the 13th doctor is how little they have her actually using that clever brain.

The one thing that I did like about that final scene was Ryan wasn't magically cured of his dyspraxia. That's huge in terms of disability representation. As a disabled person, that meant a lot to me.
@karlpoppins
@karlpoppins 3 жыл бұрын
So what? Art isn't there to make us feel good about ourselves.
@karlpoppins
@karlpoppins 3 жыл бұрын
@Samghost No, representation is not important in art; it's not unimportant either, it's just irrelevant. Art does not have a specific purpose, and making minorities feel good about themselves certainly isn't something that every artist needs to do. I'm not saying they shouldn't do that either, just that art does not have to serve a social purpose, let alone the social purpose your or I or any other individual deems important.
@karlpoppins
@karlpoppins 3 жыл бұрын
@Samghost Sure, I can have a friendly debate. My original comment was what I call the... debait ;) Aggressive enough to attract your interest, but reasonable enough to warrant a debate instead of an exchange of insults. So, to the topic at hand, it's definitely realistic that Ryan's character isn't magically cured of dyspraxia, but the only reason this is good is because it makes Ryan's character arc more believable, not because it makes real dyspraxic people feel validated. "Representation" does not add to the merit of a work of art; good use of the craft does, and Doctor Who has been pitiful television since season 9-10 or so. I don't understand how a dyspraxic or any other type of disabled person can empathise with a character that is shallow and poorly acted in a show with no internal consistency and thus very few stakes and drama. There is very good art that shines light to topics that aren't part of the average person's everyday life (such as disability or chronic conditions or what have you), it just so happens that (recent seasons of) Doctor Who isn't very good art. I know I'm touching upon two separate topics (the merit of recent seasons of DW and the relevance of representation in art), but the reason I have tied both topics in one bundle is because many critics ignore DW's poor use of the craft just because it has "a good message", so by showing that "a good message" is irrelevant to the merit of a work of art we can finally do a meaningful critique of the show without being accused that we are opposed to the show's messages, thus derailing the conversation into a series of ad hominems.
@karlpoppins
@karlpoppins 3 жыл бұрын
@Samghost "[...] having these plot points in mainstream shows like this without garnering any negative backlash is extremely important for other shows to include more diversity" - but why do we need "diversity"? What does "diversity" offer to art, or to anything, really? The kind of distinctions that qualify as "diversity" (i.e. different sexes, races, sexual orientations, etc) offer nothing unique to art. For instance, disabled people are just regular people that have a disability, they don't have a different way of thinking that would help make a better work of art. "My original point, however, still stands, representation is important in art" - but how do you support this? What does "representation" offer to art? How does it make it better? My current understanding of those that share similar views to you is that they view art only as a service to society and not as something for its own sake. If that were the case, maybe I'd see the merit in "representation", but art isn't a service and has no obligations to forward my or your moral views.

@karlpoppins
@karlpoppins 3 жыл бұрын
Chibnall's era is 90% exposition and, on top of that, the dialogue could hardly be written any poorer. We're talking Mortal Kombat movies type of bad dialogue and levels of exposition. I don't understand how this passes off as professional writing and why this person has not yet been fired on the spot. And I haven't even touched the ad hoc plot points and the uninteresting characters. In comparison, Moffat's era was marked by stupid overarching plots that usually resolved in a disappointing way, but at least he knew how to fucking write a simple dialogue and not have the actors read the script in our faces.

"Show, don't tell" is the GOLDEN RULE of writing, and yeah, Chibnall ignores it constantly. The Timeless Children was ALL "tell". It comes off as just amateurish. I "tell" a lot in my writing, but unlike Chibbers I don't have 30 years of screenwriting under my belt.

You missed the fact that the roboticist CLONED something in your list of bad things. Roboticists don't know how to clone things: they aren't geneticists!!! Scientists aren't proficient in all branches of science. And the character isn't old enough to hold multiple PhD's. Cloning isn't a thing that you can do in your basement: it requires complex equipment and materials you can't get at the drugstore. So, it's ridiculous to have the roboticist cloning a dalek. Also, the Doctor killing a TARDIS. Not cool. Another down vote in my count.

After it being "so long" since a good story involving a proper decent chunk of "Time War" Daleks, I was beyond chuffed when they all started flying out of the ship, coming down to go head to head with the Defense Drone impurities... To then have that all summed up to an 8v8 skirmish on a bridge and "yep they killed all of them".. where was the epic fight? Why did this all happen off-screen with the defense drones seemingly putting up no fight? That said, the CGI for the bronze daleks was SO GOOD. When they where all circling the tardis, they've never looked better. But yeah. "ALRIGHT" episode. Jack was underused, ending was really poor, and I definitely share the sentiment of this being Chibbers' last season.

Not too sure how I feel about Revolution Of The Daleks. There are some aspects I really like, for example some of the character interactions in the episodes. Also I squealed when I saw the bronze Daleks. But on the other hand, it was kind of mostly filler. The Dalek drones were cool but got killed off before they were given a chance to become really interesting. Jack Robertson siding with the Daleks was engaging at first, but was completely pointless as it goes pretty much nowhere; it just felt like filler. And before you know it the climax is over. Captain Jack almost didn’t need to be there. Him being there in the first place just felt like fan service. That’s my opinion anyway :)

Firstly, the dialogue annoys me so much, spoon feeding everything to the viewer like they're children. Except the one time it goes completely the other way when the doctor summons the Time War Daleks: (paraphrasing here) Doctor: I have an idea but it's gonna be nuclear Me: What's the idea? Jack: If you're thinking what I'm thinking don't do it Me: What's the idea? Doctor runs to the console and does a bunch of stuff Me: WHAT'S THE IDEA!? A beacon goes down the time vortex (or wherever it was) and a Dalek ship appears How was Jack thinking the same thing? When the Doctor said nuclear I was thinking the Ostahagen key, maybe that's just me though. Secondly, the fan service was done terribly. You can have those monsters in the prison just don't straight up point them out, have them in the background as easter eggs. And the crowbarred in references to Rose and Gwen were so out of place it was unnecessary. Finally, there felt like there was a lot of stuff that you just had to go along with and accept. How was this inventor/engineer able to clone a Dalek? How was the Dalek able to clone more Daleks? (The whole Dalek cloning facility felt like you just had to accept it had happened.) How did the Doctor send an imploded TARDIS into the void when the walls between parallel worlds have been closed? There's probably more but these were my main gripes.

They seriously downplay the Doctor’s abilities without any explanation. Like a prison would’ve held any previous incarnation without an explanation? Just as we’re getting rid of trump they decide not to give that trump rip-off what’s coming to him and instead show that the world thinks he’s a hero... that... that depressed me. Throughout all of it I had this bitter feeling in my gut because of the timeless children plot - something I have to fight to hold off when watching past doctor who stories now. Like chibnall is making me have to fight off this bitter feeling just to watch and enjoy my favourite show in the universe. And it matters, it matters to me because this show has been all I’ve had sometimes. 9 and 10 are this constant in my life. It has a genuine emotional impact on me as I’m sure it does thousands of others. That’s only a part of what I’m thinking...

@@MrVidman14 Sure, but we are not all writers and honestly, I didn't mind that scene. The explanation was ok, that Jack Robertson had to be there was annoying, however, given that he was there he needed that explanation. The fact that he didn't learn anything from that explanation makes it also necessary to give the explanation on screen. The other possibility would have been to run to the Tardis and let the Doctor say something along the line of: "I will explain." However, in my opinion, an off-screen explanation needs to be effective. Jack Robertson is the kind of person to whom no explanation* will ever be effective, therefore, he can't get anything explained off-screen, which makes him a really annoying character because everything has to be spelt out. *except if someone came in and said: "I know how to make a lot of money/get a lot of power." In that case, we all know that he will roll with whatever that person is saying.

I would argue that this is worst. Kylo Ren was the antagonist of that movie, therefore you could interpret the message of the movie, as him being wrong because he's the misguided villain and so, we the audience and the protagonists of the movie disagree with him on his points. And the writers want us to disagree with Ren's points and not like his points because he is the villain and he is wrong. Here in Revolution of the Daleks, it is one of the companions, one of the protagonists saying this, and having the main protagonist, the doctor agrees with him, with the 'writers' wanting us to agree with that point also, not considering the implications of effectively saying 'nothing about the shows prior history matters'.

To be honest, I was expecting worse. But I still have hope that a new writer some day can retcon "The Timeless Children" by showing us deleted memories that change the context of what we saw in that episode. Say, for instance all that was part of a Dream Crab's dream. Or it was all real, but the Master was wrong about it being The Doctor. And figure out some way to rescue that Tardis.

I was so close to thinking something interesting was going to happen from this episode: That part when the doctor gets angry over not knowing who she is (again) and talking about it, revealing her feelings about her entire life being rocked by the revelation of the Timeless Child, I thought it could have turned into an excellent backtrack of The Master using half-truths and manipulation to break The Doctor's spirit. Give it a series for her to go on the warpath with that anger, finding out who she is only to find out it was The Master manipulating her all along, righting the wrongs she made during The Masters influence. But nope, 5 minutes later she knows she's 'The Doctor' again, her being the Timeless Child is okay for now, and we'll just carry on. Love Barrowman in the episode though. Can't lie though, even with the stupid plot-marble escape and useless exposition I was still grinning every time I saw him. I'd happily take a 1-2 year Who hiatus and get more Torchwood.

That scene where the Death Squad Daleks opened fire on the drone Daleks and the flashes of blue vs red was so cool. I got so hyped and then literally 5 minutes later they’ve all been exterminated and we didn’t see any of it. This could have been such a cool episode with a proper Dalek war raging on the streets, seeing the drones maybe get some victories or push back against the true daleks, but no they were all killed easily and without effort and nobody got to even see it. I thought maybe they’d let the clone template Dalek live and some other plot would start between it and the death squad, maybe even a season arc, but again no, “exterminate”. Then the bronze daleks were all killed within 5 more minutes in stupid ways too. This episode is probably one of the biggest missed opportunities in modern doctor who.

One of my major problems with this episode is that Britain has been attacked by the Daleks several times. They have murdered many people on the streets of London. They would not accept "defense drones" that look like Daleks on their streets, Downing Street wouldn't have approved it and UNIT definitely wouldn't have approved it. It is sloopy caretaking of the mythology.

I really enjoyed it, while it was nothing special it was a good traditional RTD who romp. Ideal for a hungover new years day. I loved the reuse of the classic dalek SFX and totally loved the new dalek ship interior. I did like the new voices very imperial dalek. Also nice to have jack back. My only real criticism was the cgi daleks at the end, totally inaccurate to the bronze proposal and as a dalek cgi artist myself, it bugged me. Also a bit more dalek on dalek action would of been cool. But overall I enjoyed it and looking forward to john Bishop.
