My sister was 16 and went to her Dr multiple times for chest pain, coughing and the inability to breathe if she lay on her back. He kept sending her home with antibiotics for a chest infection. The one day he wasn’t in she had to book with a younger Dr, and he freaked out because her blood oxygen was bad and her heart was racing like crazy. They sent her to the hospital immediately to discover she had lymphoma and it was so bad that her heart was being pushed to the side from the cancer. The Drs at the hospital said had they left it she would’ve been dead in a few months. She beat the cancer about a year later 🎉

Like my sister’s classmate… months of excruciating migraines, sudden seizures at school (resulting in her friends rushing to catch her so she wouldn’t hit her head when she fell). She asked for an MRI, saying “There is something wrong with my brain.” Her doctor said “You’re a teenager, it’s normal for stress headaches.” She insisted, he refused. His nursing assistant talked to one of her colleagues who was (and is) an MRI-tech. (Probably wrong words here) but he agreed to see this girl who was really wanting a scan. Stage 4 brain cancer. She was 17. Twelve years later, she’s doing okay, has a much better doctor, and he has the best way of helping improve her life. “Pick a goal. Anything.” “I really want yo see lemurs in Madagascar…” “Let’s work on that.” She got to meet lemurs in Madagascar. I think she’s aiming to walk parts of China’s Great Wall now. And the doctor that ignored her concerns is no longer practicing!

I was getting the worst headaches after a bad fall. Doctor said it's normal, then after many visits told me to go to a neurologist who would give me nsaids, after 8 months, with the headaches they diagnosed as psychological migraines with aura that kept getting worse, i went to my friend's friend who is a physiotherapist and she found a herniated disc in my neck (c2), she fixed me right up and all my symptoms were gone. I only had like 1 more follow up to make sure the disc didn't herniatt again and it didn't. Everything was fine :)

After that they were handed stethoscopes so they could listen to their own hearts. The guy listens and then says something along the lines of "Uh... teach, I don't think this is normal..."

My uncle was in the hospital and my 12 year old cousin tripped and broke her jaw on his hospital bed. In the process of getting xrays they found out that she had a sizeable brain tumor that was luckily still operable at that point (totally fine in the long run, thankfully). Disclaimer: I am NOT a medical expert whatsoever, I just have experience with migraines. I'm only making this comment inform people on migraines because they're often seen as "just a bad headache". So what I would like to explain: Migraines in general as you may know can cause nausea, vomiting etc.. And one can actually get temporary(!) impaired vision from a migraine. It's a thing called "aura", if you google image search "aura migraine" you can get some kind of idea what it's like. Another specific type of migraine, called "hemiplegic migraine" can cause stroke-like symptoms such as tingling or numbness in the body, as well as slurred speech. So the symptoms combined, without any context, are actually quite similar to a 'weird migraine'. HOWEVER, as the symptoms emerged over the course of a month rather than being instantaneous with the headache, presumably this would rule out a migraine (at least in my experience, since the symptoms come and go with the migraine in a time span of 1-3 days-but again, I'm not a medical expert). Moreover, the one time that I experienced all these symptoms combined (minus the vomiting) during a migraine and they continued for more than 48 hours, I immediately got send to the ER to get a CT and MRI to rule out anything worse. So, all in all, I completely agree that the doctor should have fucking realised that it was not just a weird migraine, purely from the fact that the symptoms weren't combined in one day but slowly emerged over the course of the month. And even if they didn't they should have ordered some fucking scans to be sure. Anyway, speech over.

Tbh in some high adrenaline situations you legitimately wouldn't notice getting stabbed. Maybe he got in a fight but didn't want to admit it to his doctor? It sounds crazy, but I think it's actually possible that the patient wasn't aware he'd been stabbed. But either way, the fact that the doctor didn't notice just proves that he did not examine his patient.

@@Caroo1313 It’s actually incredibly common to not notice being stabbed or injured badly apparently. A friend of mine was stabbed with a scalpel and didn’t realise what had happened until the bleeding started.

In June of 2020 I went into my doc complaining of my swallowing feeling slow and having vitamins and some foods getting stuck lower down in my throat (sometimes chugging a full glass of water wouldn't help food or vitamins go down), I also had a constant feeling of a having a "ball" in the back of my throat. The doctor stated it was most likely acid reflux or heart burn causing my esophagus to be more constricted and if the symptoms persisted to let him know. A few months went by, I got used to the feeling and didn't think much of it anymore. Then one day in mid November 2020 I woke up and the whole base of my neck was completely swollen. I took an ibuprofen and allergy pill and waited to see if the swelling would go down. When the swelling did not go down, I went into an insta care doctor who did a physical check of my throat and then told me he thought it was nothing and would go away as fast as it appeared.... this just didn't feel right to me, so I kept asking him if he was sure over and over again (we probably went back and forth about 6-10 times) until he finally said, I really don't think it's anything but if you are that worried we can do an ultrasound. I requested the ultrasound and the following week (the day after my 26th birthday) I got a call stating they found a solid mass that appeared to be on my thyroid and wanted to follow-up with a CT scan. The CT scan ended up showing at had a very large 11cm mediastinal mass which led to a PET scan and multiple biopsies and ended in me being diagnosed with stage 3 Hodgkins Lymphoma cancer. I still to this day can not believe how dismissive this doctor was of my concerns and how much I had to advocate that this was not normal. Luckily today I am approaching my 1-yr mark of being cancer free which is only due to me insisting that my symptoms needed further investigation. Otherwise it might have progressed to stage 4 and possibly death.

I'm so sorry. Doctors truly have the power to either save or end a life, just like that. It's irresponsible, and to me the most unforgivable thing you can do to someone. I wonder if Mike gets mad at these doctors, but just doesn't say anything. The doctors here in Sweden are abhorrent. I'm 27, I've spent a third of my life trying to get help, but soon I'm going to die simply because I didn't get help in time. I feel full of hatred and spite. Doctors have ruined my life, now it's too late to save me even if they'd try. I could not have fought harder for myself, all in vain. Sorry for venting. I've had too many traumatic experiences, both my body and brain are damaged beyond repair now. It keeps getting worse and worse.

Reminds me of an issue my sister had with our previous doctor (we both saw the same one). She was having intense pain and incredibly heavy bleeding on her period. She went our doctor about it because she also had ovarian cysts and wanted to know if anything could be done. The doctor said there was nothing that could be done. She would just have to deal with it. It took a few years of her husband trying but he eventually convinced her to see his doctor. She got diagnosed with endometriosis and got medication for it and was scheduled with surgery to remove the cysts and scar tissue from the endometriosis. That previous doctor cost my sister years of pain because he didn't care

I have severe endometriosis and its amazing to me how much its dismissed. I have a terrible time getting doctors to help. I have suffered since I was 12 and was in my 30s before even getting a doctor to try and help me. and that was only after I had a grapefruit sized cyst and they finally wanted to remove it. I had adhesions completely covering everything and I have a frozen pelvis. I will never be able to have children and am getting a hysterectomy in October. I struggle with the fact that if I had gotten help sooner I may have at least been able to carry one child, but now I will never know. I feel like doctors who dont help their patients or god forbid make conditions worse, should just not be doctors! Im sorry your sister went through that. Its inexcusable really.

That headache one makes me so mad! As someone with chronic migraines, if your doctor doesn't want you to see a neurologist, fire them as your doctor. Period. My friend is going through this right now and I cannot be more adamant to her about demanding to see a neurologist because if you have major head pain that can be a serious serious thing. DON'T WAIT TO BE DEAD!

Recently I went from being totally normal to all of a sudden lots of heart palpitations, severe dizziness, rapid heart rate, collapses, nausea, extreme anxiety (fear of even leaving my home), extreme tiredness, quick weight loss among a few other things. I went to A&E confused and terrified and was told it was a panic attack. Symptoms get worse and I go again. This repeats 4 times and I'm put on anxiety meds and I can tell that the nurses are getting annoyed with seeing me. It was an awful feeling :( on my last visit a nurse finally decided to run more comprehensive blood tests and my GP sent me for a brain scan. I had won the jackpot and gotten severe thyroiditis (hyperthyroidism) and I found out I had a very large brain cyst that had suddenly decided to start growing. I cannot tell you how nice it felt to know I wasn't insane. Happy to say cyst was removed 4 weeks ago and the surgery went great! For things like this you really gotta trust your instincts. And if you find that you start getting a panic disorder out of nowhere, for the love of God, check your thyroid!

yea, I was seeing dark figures, hearing voices and having a constant feeling that I was followed by someone/something that was going to hurt me. I was so paranoid that I couldn't leave my house without having a knife in my pocket (illegal where I live) and I couldn't fall asleep cause I had to go out of bed several times to make shure that the doors were locked. it all cracked when I had a massive panic attack for many hours and I was just driving around in my car for hours until I was too tired to keep driving and I pulled over and slept for a couple hours in my car. when I woke up was the panic there just like the night before and I kept driving for the entire day when I called for help and was ordered to stop my car so an ambulance could come and get me. I refused and asked where I should drive and that nurse stayed with me on the line for the hour I had to drive just to make shure that I came to the hospital safe and every 5 or so minutes did she ask if I was ok or if I needed an ambulance. I ended up staing at the psych ward for 3 weeks and i'm so much better now. I have medications to help me sleep and I have medications for when I get a panic attack. I unfortunately haven't found an antidepressant that work, I only get the bad side effects and no good effect out of them.

Some doctor's just don't care. I had one of those. I've had a Medusa piercing for quite a long time. In autumn at the beginning of a lockdown my lip started swelling because I somehow managed to get an infection. It hurt extremely bad and because of the lockdown I couldn't go to my piercer so I went to see my doctor. She didn't even give me antibiotics (although the infection was really bad) and sent me home, saying that I should visit the piercer after lockdown for him to take it out. Yes right... Lockdown was set for a month. The next day it got even worse and I went to see another doctor. Although he didn't have the right equipment he managed to remove the piercing and he gave me antibiotics. He didn't get how the other doctor just send me home either. The first doctor just didn't care at all. I don't get why people like that don't just send you to someone else when they don't want to treat you.

this is a story from my niece! so when she was 16, she got a scan on her thyroid. we live in a country where theres a lot of thyroid related problems so it was needed. when she got a scan, she was reffered to an endocrinologist. he said that she has a tumor-like thing growing on her thyroid and could get a biopsy if she wants, but he didnt recommend. my aunt being the crazy person she is, she took my beice to a TON of doctors! the doctors said that she needed a biopsy ASAP. this doctor (endocrinologist) affected 4 people by basically not helping them. his license isnt still taken awayv somehow. and yes my niece is fine!! she got a surgery to remove the thyroid (almost spread to her throat).

Re. The heart thing: about 18 months ago a colleague of mine got a fitbit. Long story short it alerted her to a previously undiagnosed heart condition. I don't know the details but she was scheduled for surgery within a very short space of time. She was still only working part-time when Covid hit. We're in New Zealand so she was safe, but after lockdown she decided to take early retirement.

What I got from the post/story was, they knew psychosis patients are living a fantasy life (of course they knew). One way to check is to compare it to reality. For example, if a guy say, "yeah I'm depressed because my dog killed and ate my horse", that's a red flag. I think the patient in the story was borderline genius that his fantasy made up life (that he thought was real) was consistent and ran true with reality values, that few psychiatrists didn't catch it immediately.

I will say though, some of them are actively trying to trick you. My mother is one of them. She will be having a full on fit, spouting absolute nonsense, screaming, getting violent, and then the police show up and she's like "Who, me? I didn't do anything officer 😬" I don't blame her for it, I blame the illness, but she will try to trick people. She doesn't want help. And that's a big part of why she's been missing for 3 years. The AZ police didn't take us seriously for the first 6 months because they had never seen her behave that way. They only classified her as missing after I was able to get her out of state records sent over from before she learned to hide it so well.

She pooped on the way there, but it was discovered that her blood pressure was sky high and a stroke was imminent. Sonnenanbeterin1991 Plenty probably are.. but this stuff does happen. I was scheduled for surgery for a rotator cuff tear that, turns out, didn't exist. Got all the way past the pre-op appointment before it was caught (with a second opinion that found the true issue far too easily for comfort, IMO). I'll never know if there was anything legitimately suspicious on the contrast MRI, or if the surgeon was just too biased towards wanting to perform surgical procedures. Money was the only reason my parents decided on the late second opinion. Scale that up to ER level, and I don't doubt a lot happens.

The ear tumor thing is no joke. It's called a cholesteatoma and I had one removed a few years ago. It was benign thankfully. The ENT surgeon had to build me a new ear drum because the cyst had grown through it. He was able to restore about 90% of the hearing in that ear. I'm just missing some high frequencies.

Hey, this is my story. It was more like my third opinion or something, mainly brought on by my pediatrician throwing in the towel and getting me an EEG because I was having eye fluttering with no known cause and it was slowly getting worse(bigger movements/longer episodes/new body parts moving). Anyway, it started up when I was in 5th grade, and my pediatrician said it was a nervous tick. A year goes by, slowly getting head twitching as well as eye fluttering. Go to the eye doctor for regular exam and do a type of scan that puts lights into the backs of your eyes, there was too much light so the eye doctor thought it was a scratched cornea. Got transitional lenses for my glasses. Fluttering and head twitching came back with sudden moments of inability to move legs right or arm would flinch up. Another year, pediatrician gives up and orders an EEG. Two weeks waiting for the appointment, all while my mom was saying it was a waste of time. Go to the appointment, do the thing. Go home, wait for a month before we finally get results. But they only tell us it's abnormal, but to get an appointment at Children's Hospital. Go to Children's Hospital. I have photosensitive epilepsy. Yes, I am currently being medicated for it. 4000mg of Keppra daily (2000mg every 12 hours).

When I was in high school, I took a biomedical science course as an elective. One thing we did was go around the school with our EKGs and blood pressure monitors and use them on willing participants. One of the security guards, who had a known heart condition, ended up having to go home to take his medicine because we discovered his heart rate was so high and irregular it almost warranted a trip to the ER. I just always think what could've happened if we hadn't been doing that lab that day or had skipped over him. It was a very satisfying feeling knowing that just a simple group of high schoolers could've possibly saved his life.

I’m not in the medical field, I do work in home security and I find that … When I’m asking probing questions when our customers want to cancel … the tone of voice is EVERYTHING. My "thank god" moment was when I was younger, around 8 or 9, my eyes started swelling shut after I'd cry (edema). My mom said it was because I was "allergic to my tears". Riiiiight. Anyways, this went on for a few months until my step-dad decided to take action and brought me to a doctor. After blood work, protein measurements, and a biopsy, I got diagnosed with Nephrotic syndrome. Short explanation; the filters in my kidneys basically melted together because of a bad infection. I was told it was so serious, that if we would have waited any longer, I would have gone into complete renal failure; Anyways, about 10 years later, I'm happy, healthy, and live a normal life because my step-dad had a gut feeling that my eyes shouldn't swell when I cry. Fun stuff.

I had a really bad rah and fever and was vomiting, so she took me to the local doctor who gave me some really strong antibiotics that you're only supposed to give adults with serious issues. I was staying at my grandmas when I was 8, and I had been having trouble breathing all day. That night my mum was sleeping in the same room as me and heard my breathing get shallower and shallower and then stop. She woke me up and took me to the hospital, turns out I'd had my first ever asthma attack and my left lung had collapsed. I lost 10% of my lung capacity and had to stay in the hospital for 4 days. My mum had the "worst headache of her life" and went to a local hospital who did a CT but didn't find any bleeding. Sent her home with painkillers and told her it was probably a migraine. My mum is a nurse so she went home, 2 hours later she knew something was wrong, went back to the hospital, had another CT and they found a brain aneurysm that had burst. She was air lifted from that hospital to the nearest big Neuro hospital and was put into emergency surgery. Doctors said 15 minutes later she wouldn't have made it. She also had a stroke several days later in the shower at hospital which is apparently one of the things that can happen. She is all good now but this incident changed our relationship forever. I cherish her every day now

When I was in high school, my eyes were really itchy for some weird reason and in about two days nearly lost sight in my right eye. I went to the doctor and they diagnosed me with pink eye. That didn't sound right to my dad because he's had pink eye before. I went in for a second opinion with a different doctor and one of the first questions he asks me was, "Where were you before your eyes started itching?". I told him that I was in jewelry class and we were working on silver rings. He asked me if I was wearing any form of protection for my eyes. It took me a moment to remember that I completely forgot to put goggles on that day. So, he started looking around my right eye which was the eye having the worst symptoms. When he started looking behind my eyelid he found 6 flecks of silver behind my eyelid and quickly got them out. Prescribed an anti-inflammatory and sent on my way.

Thanks to paramedics taking him seriously, he was scanned and diagnosed with a subarachnoid haemorrhage from an unknown aneurysm in his carotid artery rupturing. He was treated with a coil and has made a full recovery...but please, never ever ignore this. He was an otherwise healthy, young man and he nearly died.

My story: I was only 2 years old, returned home from a family holiday from abroad, and my mother said I was coughing really bad. She took me to my family doctor who said it was only a cold and gave me some medicine, but my coughing didn't get any better, my parents were worried and took me to the hospital the same day to have me checked, and there they said I had bacterial pneumonia and that I was lucky they took me in or I might not have woken up the next day... I was treated in hospital for 9 months. My mother said that was the worst phase of their lives. I know it's an older video and no one will see it but I wanted to share: do trust your gut feelings, it never hurts to have an other expert's second opinion.

When I was 5 years old I had the chicken pox and a cold. I coughed into my hand and then scratched at a pock on my jaw. Woke up the next morning with a swollen neck. I was taken to the family doctor who wrote a note to give to the emergency doctors at CHEO (Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario). We rushed to CHEO (an hour drive) and when we got there and handed them the note, they shut everything down to focus on me. I had necrotising fasciitis; aka flesh eating disease. I was not supposed to make it. Priests were called to pray for me and the doctors told my parents they might have to start planning my funeral. By some miracle, I made it. I'm now 24 years old and healthy. Lots of scarring around my neck and under one armpit from the many (4) surgeries I had to remove the dying tissue as well as some nerve damage around my chin and mouth. If it wasn't for my family doctor who knew what it was (it's very hard to diagnose, or it was back then), I might not be here today. Very happy to be alive! :)

so true checking the entirety of a patient is so important, a classics case where it could be make a difference is bullet wound, you take care of the entrance but most people completely forget there might be a exit wound to, and the exit is always worse then the entrance cause the bullet slowed down an is now ripping rather than puncturing/cutting through

My "thank god for a second opinion" moment: I had been having weird muscle spasms in my arms for YEARS, been told by multiple family members it was no big deal. Basically it was like getting an electric shock - I temporarily lost control of the muscles and if I was holding something, I dropped it. I learned to hide these symptoms, because everyone was acting like I was a klutz and laughing at me. Eventually the spasms progressed into the rest of my body, to the point where I was actually hitting the floor. Everyone was still acting like it was normal except my grandmother (who gets worried way too easily about other things, so no one really took her seriously). My "guardians" at the time (I was a child by the way, I was sixteen) literally laughed at me when I broke down in tears telling them something was wrong and I needed medication. I went back to hiding my symptoms. I eventually had a full on seizure; lost consciousness, the whole shebang. Was taken to ER, they told my guardians (they wouldn't even speak to me, except to affirm that I was conscious - I was at that point - and tell me to strip so they could attach the heart monitor stuff. They NEVER asked me about other symptoms) it was dehydration and sent me home. Guardians' solution was to ban coffee and make me chug sports drinks. At this point my mum (who I was not living with) was concerned, and kept pushing for my guardians to take me to a doctor. I then had a SECOND seizure. In the time it took for me to then get taken to a neurologist and diagnosed with juvenile myoclonic epilepsy, I ended up having a third. These three seizures were spaced out over months. If ANY of the numerous relatives I repeatedly expressed concerns with had listened to me, if ANYONE at the hospital had bothered to ask me about my symptoms instead of ignoring me and just asking my "guardians" (who weren't taking me seriously and omitted ALL the years of symptoms I had expressed having up to that point), they could've saved me from having at least two of those seizures. I'm glad I finally got a diagnosis, because now, all I have to do is take a pill and I've been seizure free for almost ten years. But I am FURIOUS at how long I had to suffer in silence because no one was listening to me. I am furious at the multiple years I spent too embarrassed to insist that something was medically wrong because everyone was making me feel like it was my fault. I am furious that I had to have multiple seizures for anyone to start taking me seriously when I had been having obvious symptoms for years. EVERYONE OUT THERE who may be in my position, who may need to hear this: You know your body. If you know deep in your heart that something is wrong, do not accept anyone telling you otherwise. Fight, and keep fighting until someone listens to you and takes you seriously. You deserve to be heard. It's not your fault.

6:30 this reminds me of a time. i was like 17 and started getting chest pains. spread into shoulder and down my left arm. went to the ER immediately. They brought me in to see a doctor immediately. Turned out to be a mitral valve prolapse, that I suddenly became aware of. The pain was from a panic attack, induced by the sensations of the prolapse. I was sent home right away. I thought it was odd but apparently there's a symptom that is essentially unique to mitral valve prolapse. edit: They had me get some tests done the next day to confirm it, and yeah that's what it was.

The headache stories always worry me. My sister's a full Nurse Practitioner now and had a story very similar to one of these. A patient of her's was in the ER with the "worst headache of her life" and her ER doc, for some reason, was playing a "wait and see if it gets better" game. Luckily my sister insisted on a scan and they found a tumor before it could get worse.

My father has aneurysms. I mention that and that I have a history of headaches caused by vascular dilation. They always take my headaches seriously now because of the history. Fortunately, I had a great doctor when the first vascular one occurred.

There's a real disconnect for some people when trying to communicate with their doctors. Sometimes it's a problem on both sides. But if you literally say worst pain ever, they should check. Much less coming back multiple times with worsening symptoms. They needed a new doctor.

My grandfather died following a car accident due to a brain hemorrhage. The hospital didn't do the brain scans and even two weeks later when my grandmother took him back to the hospital because he was showing signs, slurred speech, slowed reactions, memory loss etc, they STILL didn't check. He died two days later in a different hospital, but at that stage they couldn't do anything to save him.

A few years ago I was suffering with severe headaches. Couldn't eat, losing weight, dizzy and in so much pain. Doctor told me "they were just headaches" or "it was just stress" got a second opinion. Doctor took one look at me, ordered an MRI and found I had meningoencephalitis. Great.

This reminds me of when I had a 104 degree F fever when I was a kid and was coughing up a ton of nasty gunk and hadn’t been able to eat anything for a week. I was diagnosed with a cold and given oral antibiotics at a clinic. My mom took me in to the ER because “no this is definitely not a cold!” Turns out, no, this is a really bad case of bacterial pneumonia. Was given stronger oral antibiotics but after 2 days and an even worse fever (105 F if I remember correctly), I had to be admitted for a week and given three different IV antibiotics and a nebulizer treatment once every 6 hours. The doctor who looked at my X-ray said that if I had waited even a day longer to come in again, my right lung would have collapsed and I would have almost definitely died. Not an expert on X-ray reading but even I know lungs are not supposed to show up the same shade as my rib cage. Not a fun experience but at least the residents got to listen to lungs that sounded like bubble wrap being popped. Hopefully that next generation of doctors are able to catch that type of thing sooner so nobody else has to go through that.

speaking as someone who suffers from (mostly controlled) epileptic seizures after a brain surgery for hydrocephalus, those kind of headaches and symptoms are truly horrifying and painful.

When I was around 12 years old, I started to get migraines, unbeknownst to me. They were "just headaches" to me because I was 12 and thoughts the two were interchangeable. One day, I was crying on the bedroom floor- screaming in pain. So, to Children's Hospital we went. So, I got an MRI, which was clear. I know this because I was asked if I was being bullied to which I answered yes. Because, I was being bullied. Unfortunately, this made me mask my migraines because the doctor said I was fine. Fast forward to more recently. Over the years, my symptoms have worsened to auras, vomiting and more intense/frequent pain. However, these presented in the sinus area. So, I got an allergist. I tried shots, was treated for asthma and tried various allergy medications. Nothing worked. The pain was still there and was nearly DAILY. Finally, after exhausting the allergist's options, he sent me to the headache clinic. I think I'm on the right track now. I'm glad that I got an allergist because I didn't know that headaches were not supposed to be that bad. I thought I was just intolerant to pain.
