PCOS, or polycystic ovarian syndrome, is a hormonal condition that affects over 5 million women of reproductive age. Women with PCOS may have infrequent or prolonged menstrual periods or excess male hormone (androgen) levels. The ovaries may develop numerous small collections of fluid (follicles) and fail to regularly release eggs. The symptoms can be quite unpleasant and many people goes years before receiving a diagnosis. While there is no definitive cure, there are treatment options you can discuss with your doctor.

Finally, A doctor who acknowledges that PCOS exists! I was diagnosed when I was 16 and most doctors tell me it's a made-up "disease" When I ask why I have so many PCOS symptoms, they usually just shrug it off. PCOS takes a big enough mental toll without doctors adding to that by telling you it doesn't exist. Doctor Mike, you're always right on the money with your videos.

I'm glad he talked about it too. I recently got diagnosed with it. For over a yr I was getting treated for anxiety and depression. My periods were irregular but I never thought to mention it to my doctor. It wasn't until a particularly bad month when my period lasted over 2 weeks and I lost so much blood that my red count dropped to anemic levels, that I mentioned it to my doctor and said there has to be more going on with me. And when she ordered for an ultrasound, they found the cysts. That coupled with my other symptoms and all the weight I'd gained finally led to a diagnosis. So I would dare any doctor to tell me that it isn't real. For a yr and a half I've literally been depressed and thought that something was mentally wrong with me, now I know it's a hormone imbalance. And ever since I started taking birth control to normalize it, I've felt better. And I never felt this much better in all the months I was taking zoloft and other mood drugs. So it is real.

What would those pills even be? That is such a weird reaction. Sounds like those "doctors" were projecting their insecurities onto an innocent patient. Usually birth control and metformin is given to pcos patients to regulate their periods and blood sugar. How is that going to make someone 'skinny'...I'm sorry you and your daughter had to experience that. I hope she is doing better now.

@@lily5952 reducing weight usually leads to lower PCOS symptoms. So most doctors suggest losing weight, but weight loss is more difficult when you have PCOS so most doctors give you diet pills to kick start the process. I have it too and so far, the only thing that's helped me was light exercise every day + avoiding gluten and dairy as much as possible. My diet now consists of a lot more veggies and a lot less sugar than before. My period still comes 1-4 times a year (which is bad), but at least I'm not feeling as much pain as before, and have more energy and less mood swings. So, if pills don't work for you (or anyone else reading this), you might want to consult with a dietician who's focusing on this matter and has good experience with others (aka isn't a scammer). It's been trial and error for me, mostly because doctors prescribed me several brands of hormone pills and when I said that they didn't work and came with some nasty side-effects, their attitude was like "well, I don't know what to do next, sorry". And I think that comes from most general practitioners not knowing the finer details, such as gluten, dairy and sugar causing a pretty high level of inflammation over the years. Sorry for the wall of text, but if it helps anyone who's been struggling for years like I have, I'm happy. And if there will be a longer video about PCOS explaining these kinds of details, I think it would help out some.

Please correct me if I’m wrong, I’m just a med student with an interest in this topic as I have PCOS. The name is actually a misnomer, it’s called PCOS because you can have the APPEARANCE of cysts on your ovaries but they are not actually cysts (which is another thing which has it’s own complications), they’re follicles. And you don’t even need to have the polycystic ovary appearance to be diagnosed with PCOS, in fact it can also be present in healthy individuals. Therefore some people are proposing to change the name as it’s primarily a metabolic/endocrine disorder related to insulin levels and sex hormones rather than anything wrong with the ovaries

He specifically said: "It's not your fault that you're overweight. PCOS is one of two or three conditions which actively pack on the pounds." Then he put me on Metformin (for the PCOS, not diabetes-I don't have that) and things have gotten much better. I cried for over an hour just because he treated me like a person instead of a fat person.

Thank you, I have pcos. I started my period at 9, I took a while to get the diagnosis, but when I did, the only solution was to “lose weight” causing an eating disorder at 10-16 years of age. At that point I was an athlete training to go to the olympics (It was my dream) and I spent 9am-4pm every day in the water. I was just a really muscular kid but my doctor kept saying I was morbidly obese. I had to stop a sport I loved because I started to starve myself and I would often pass out after practice/races.

Yes I have PCOS and something nobody talks about is how much it hurts IF THE CYSTS BURST! I’ve went to the ER twice for it and both times they were like “you’re not bleeding more than if you were on a heavy period you’re fine the period like pain is normal” when I’m literally unable to stand I’m in so much pain. Now if a cyst bursts my PCP can prescribe me pain meds and anti-cramping meds

I really like seeing doctors like you bring more awareness to women's reproductive health because it is STILL so poorly understood and not taken seriously enough. How long it took for me to get diagnosed -and even reading all the comments - it's abysmal how little understanding there is in the medical community, so we have to be able to advocate for ourselves. Dairy tends to be a big trigger of symptoms. I went largely plant based last year and it helped with symptoms and apparently an unplanned pregnancy. Lol. I generally only occasionally ate fish. What I did was listen to my body after foods. If something made me feel icky I would remove it, so I also went largely gluten free. My symptoms are also highly linked to stress, so taking time to destress is important. Don't over exercise (made this mistake lol). Hope this helps!

I also got my diagnosis recently and mine is also very mild and in early stage. You can get a fertility test done for your peace of mind though, like I did. My doctor prescribed it and since my PCOD is in an early stage, it hasn't affected my fertility yet. I am still young and don't have plans on having kids yet but infertility was like a shadow hanging over my head and stress is bad for PCOD so I got it tested early. I am very high up in the scale regarding fertility and now can concentrate on improving my health without worrying. I am taking medicines prescribed to me and making dietary and lifestyle changes. Hope everything is going good for you too.

So glad that Dr. Mike talked about PCOS on his platform! I was recently diagnosed with it after having irregular periods for over 2 years, along with other symptoms. I had my blood work done and found that I had slightly elevated testosterone levels, and that was pretty much the giveaway. My mom also has PCOS but she wasn’t diagnosed until well into adulthood. I’m lucky I got my diagnosis at 17 because it was so frustrating having irregular periods. I was always told that I wasn’t monitoring my cycle correctly because I never knew when it would start and it always caught me off-guard. People always told me it’s supposed to be regular and easy for me to predict but not for someone with PCOS lol.
