The idea of a colostomy is horrifying to me too, always has been. But I was recently in the hospital to get my gallbladder removed, and it kept getting delayed because BP is too low, heart rate is too high, bacteremia (infection in blood) makes it too risky. At one point, they said they were going to put a drain in to get some of the muck out of my gallbladder. I was anesthetized, and when I woke up, I had a bag hanging from my abdomen that would slowly fill with gross brown stuff and would be periodically emptied, from the bottom, by the nurses. I had it securely attached to my hospital gown with a safety pin so it wouldn't get caught on anything, and I was actually surprisingly okay with it. And finally, I was able to have my surgery. Still freaked out a bit by colostomies, but not as much now.

14:28 my dad is a firefighter-paramedic in our smallish town, he told me about a funny OD story that took place on his shift one day. The house gets a call from dispatch about a possible overdose at the local ice cream shop. They pile into the squad and head over. When the walk in, the patient’s feet can be seen lying out from the bathroom. The patrons, however, pay no mind to the near-dead dude in the bathroom, and continue to eat their ice cream. It was pretty comical, and they ignored the situation even after the other medics shot him up with narcan and transported him 😅

It hit me like a gunshot to the chest. Not only did I grieve but I knew the kids would not understand and that they did not have family to go to. I bet they got separated in the system. So my dad spent his 3 weeks summer vacation taking care of her while she got weaker and weaker. One evening he had to carry her to bed when he realised she's unresponsive, so he called the night doctor. Doc showed up, talked briefly with my dad and as soon as the 'possible broken back' was mentioned he called for an ambulance straight away. My dad visited her at the hospital every day, and she kept telling him "I feel like I'm going to die very soon from a heart attack" while refusing all the treatment and examination procedures the medical staff would provide. She still didn't eat anything and after 9 days her body couldn't take anymore, so she had a massive heart attack and died.

For anyone wondering what "DKA" means with regards to diabetics, that is "diabetic ketoacidosis" and you really don't want to develop that because it means your body starts trying to break down your fat but does so SO fast that it makes your blood pH go quite acidic, which can be deadly. It can put you into cardiac arrest, can cause you to develop excess fluid on your brain, and can easily put you into kidney failure, which could lead to dialysis if you survive the other stuff first. The least it can do is give you breath that smells like fruit soaked in nail polish remover (no lie). Don't mess around with your diabetes, folks. This happens more often with type 1 diabetics such as myself but it CAN happen to type 2 diabetics as well (there are three types of diabetes that I know of). Take your damn insulin, moderate your diet, and get yourself OUT of denial already or you will die by inches. If you are diabetic, I highly suggest you look up some of the videos here on KZbin about diabetic foot care and diabetic ulcers. That'll scare you straight if nothing else will. Nobody wants toes that are black and rotting off. Take care of your diabetes. I found my diabetes because I started drinking and peeing like a racehorse, was fairly disoriented a lot, and at the end, was losing over a pound a day in weight as my body literally consumed itself trying to fuel itself. It is not a diet plan I recommend, btw. It's pretty abysmal. When I was first diagnosed, my doctor's blood glucose meter reading was "high". I don't know what number that signified but she got real pale and ordered her nurse to bring insulin immediately. I apparently maxed out her meter. A few days later, we sorted everything out and I've been on a pretty even keel ever since. That was 22 years ago. So far, so good. Take care of yourselves. :)

My grandma died of leg gangrene because she refused to amputate a few years ago. She was super healthy and in her 90s, then she went in for some elective procedure and something went wrong. The circulation to her toes was cut off too long and her foot wound up gangrenous, but she believed that dying with an intact body was more important for her dignity, and refused to amputate. I hear she died in excruciating pain. Perhaps the nurse in that story was responsible caring for her. Thank you to all the medical staff that need to put up with this sort of thing, it's not easy to watch a patient die, less so when you know that you can help, but your hands are tied, but you do your best with what you have, and the patient's wishes.

Medical professionals regularly place IV lines in arms, wrists, etc in order to deliver lifesaving medications or even just hydration directly into a patient's bloodstream... however, in the case of this comment it is being used in the "street" slang way, where "IVing" means using hard drugs intravenously, on their own, without medical supervision. This commenter ended up getting a very dangerous and corrosive shitty excuse for a drug called "krokidil" which permanently scarred the injection sites. Hope this helps! The term IV itself isn't scary or bad at all, it's very normal in medicine... but for drug addiction, when people are using drugs on their own by injecting intravenously, then it's as scary as you see in these comments and stories, since they're not exactly in a sterile hospital!

Diabetes may not be cancer, but that doesn’t change the fact that it’s a serious medical condition. It’s not right to belittle diabetes because it’s ‘manageable’. Type 1 diabetes is an exhausting disease that requires 24/7 dedication. And even if you’re doing everything you’re supposed to… diabetes has a mind of its own. Everything in life affects diabetes and unless you have diabetes you have no right to belittle it.

It saddens me when I hear people choose holistic medicine over cancer treatments because they dont trust modern medicine. If it wouldn't be too difficult for you, you could search a non-specialist doctor you have a good feeling with. These people need to at least realize that the doctors and modern medicine *are* the answer to their prayers 🤦♂️😡 It always reminds me of the joke about a guy stuck on his roof in a flood, refusing to get in any of the boats or helicopters that come by to rescue him, because he's "praying for god to save me." Well, he dies and when he sees god he asks "I prayed for days, why didn't you save me!?!" And god just says "what the fuck man, I sent like 3 boats and 2 helicopters to save you!!!"

I am Catholic. I do not agree in abortion. However, one of my other religious friends had an ectopic pregnancy and refused to get the surgery, I say surgery as it is not a viable pregnancy. I actually had a fight with her about it but eventually convinced her that since the baby wouldn't be able to gain nutrients from her fallopian tube, I do not know if this is true, it wasn't a really pregnancy. She waited so long, however, she lost the tube entirely.
@revenevan112 жыл бұрын
You just said you agree with abortion, though. Plenty of cases almost exactly like your friend's are the ones we're all supporting abortion rights about. Sure, there's a difference in the definition of when a clump of cells should be considered human, but even outside of that if they will both die or even just have an elevated chance to, then the pregnant person should be able to get a lifesaving abortion *in a timely manner* and yet you've been convinced and nearly brainwashed by propaganda to the point where you say you support this for someone you know but also "don't agree in abortion" in literally the same comment. You *do* believe in / agree with abortion, even if you don't know it. Maybe you don't think it should be used in medically unnecessary cases, but that's only part of this debate, and you're on the side of the evil people who would rather let people like your friend die than give them agency over their own bodies and medical treatment.

My thoughts on this video: Bandaid box is part of my regular rotation of euphemisms for things now. "Fuck in the general direction of off" is going to be on a T-shirt from Cafepress the moment I'm done listening to this video. Ejaulate blood...mmmmhmhmmuahaha. And um...on a more serious note I can understand why a lot of Americans might refuse treatment given the general cost of seeking any level of medical attention...but Britain? That is some shocking levels of stupidity. If it was about just how long the wait list is to get treatment from the NHS then I could understand but this is just willful stupidity. Edit: one more thing....ehehehem...IT'S OVER ONE THOUSAAAAAAAAAND! Second edit: "left with his arms flapping in the wind" just left the most hysterical image in my head I think I hacked out a lung laughing! This man was Al Harrington!

My brother died in February of 2022 and he was an alcoholic and a diabetic who just couldn't be bothered with watching his glucose levels and adapting his diet for over 10 years. For anyone without a medical background, not managing you diabetes can cause organ damage, especially to the liver and kidneys. Then add to that the alcohol further damaging his liver and kidneys. In the last few years his mental state was so bad because you develop an irrational agitated state when your liver and kidneys become so damaged they are on the verge of setting down. I can't begin to describe the various necrotic wounds he had and the sepsis he had at one point. My brother had a lot of traumatic experiences as a kid that he never got over and he never really ever learned to cope with stressor so he became an alcoholic to help him deal. Never underestimate the impact mental health plays in your overall health people!
