There wasn’t a case of BSE (Mad Cow) that jumped the species barrier to humans, until there was. And thousands of cases followed. So to say that CWD is not a concern because there hasn’t been a case of it jumping the species barrier is absurd.

In Minnesota, every wild CWD case since 2013 (when this video came out) has stemmed from deer farms. So obviously there's a pretty direct correlation between deer farms and the spread of CWD, whether it was "created" there or not is besides the point when clearly the farms are the main catalyst of the disease. It blows my mind how Keith and others in this video dismiss this, deer farmers SHOULD be held responsible for this spread. As a hunter, I believe high fence deer farms are awful. Whitetails were meant to be wild and hunted as so (not to be "owned" by a land owner). Whitetails are not cattle.

Well, someone removed their previous comments. FYI, for those interested, I contacted the Colorado Division of Wildlife to speak with Dr. Mike Miller hoping to have him as a guest. Spoke with his office several times trying to make this happen, he never contacted me back. Also, QDMA had an opportunity to be on the documentary as well, but they declined.

There is a lot of misinformation in this video. Like “cwd is not always fatal” WRONG. Cwd is 100 percent fatal if the deer doesn’t die from something else first. That’s the only reason they can say that and get away with it

mdslax 01 i think what he meant to say is that almost all of the deer that have cwd do not end up dying from it. For the most part The disease just doesnt degrade the deer enough to kill them before something else. Deer in captivity with cwd were observed and it took most of the deer 5-8 years to die from it. The average life span of a wild whitetail deer is 4.5 years. Hypothetically, If there was a disease that humans would die from if they lived to be 130 years old do you think it would be an urgent issue?

Would CWD keep popping up if the deer breeding industry did not exist? It's ignorant to think that the trafficking of deer via the breeding industry has not influenced the spread of CWD in some way. Even if CWD does occur in low prevalence, does the financial gain of a few breeders justify spreading this disease into new areas, especially since it cannot be eradicated once established? Also, wildlife is not "private property." Wild animals are held in trust by the government for the people.

Good information Keith. It was interesting to see another side of the conversation. It's good to see the results of their previous efforts to contain CWD and their desire to control private land owners. The state parks moving infected Elk herds was eye opening. I hope they allow testing with the non-lethal test. Too many HEALTHY deer have died while trying to find a few sick ones.

This is an extremely fascinating topic and I greatly appreciate your input. I believe it's important to listen to everybody, regardless of my own opinions, to reach an objective conclusion on an issue. While I personally am not a fan of hunting, I understand that it's not my right to dictate what another person does, so long as poaching endangered species is not involved (which is obviously not the case with deer and elk). I do not appreciate the government infringing citizens' rights and lying to us about it.

Keith, I write a column for the Jackson Hole News and Guide weekly called Cowboy Common Sense. My column printed Dec 30, 2015 was about how CWD was a "Bogeyman" disease. www.jhnewsandguide.com/opinion/columnists/cowboy_common_sense/on-elk-feedgrounds-the-bogeyman-stalks/article_fa53bc9f-fcee-59d9-afbf-26cce0bfedd8.html#user-comment-area You may enjoy reading it. However, you also need to contact Justin Binfet of the Casper Wyoming Game and Fish Office. He says the infection rate among mule deer south of Casper is 40% CWD and they are VERY concerned about that herd. But you are correct in that the Laramie Peak/Muddy Mountain elk herd has grown by 400% with CWD infection (average 4.8% over 30 years).

I watched an episode of the Netflix series "Longmire" that dealt with CWD. A Chinese chemist was making a sports supplement out of Elk horn silk and elk pancreas that caused CWD in humans over time. Elk were being shot out of season to obtain the ingredients. It was the first time I ever heard of CWD. Very interesting.

This did not age well. However, I do agree that it originated at Colorado State University. The deer farms may not have CREATED it, but they definitely helped SPREAD it. It has certainly become an issue today, and it IS decimating deer populations across the country. This video is a bunch of deer farmers pointing fingers and downplaying the whole disease, which has now become an epidemic. This barely mentions EHD (epizootic hemorrhagic disease) or blue tongue, which has also increased dramatically in deer populations.

WI data can be found on the WDNR website, keyword CWD. The core area has high prev. rates, but not there are higher rates too there. Of course, prevalence rates area matter if scale, the smaller the area in a high prevalence foci, the higher the prev. rate.

North Alabama near the top tip of Mississippi are cwd zones of concern with mandatory testing it’s only a matter of time it gets to our property! I figured they would have like signed or symptoms I’m a Nurisng student and went to Texas A&M and pretty sad that this video isn’t educational at all maybe because it’s 9 years old. Make sure you check your zones to see if deer are possibly infected so that you can tested there are testing sites in those areas. Mines in outdoor Alabama

Although I am opposed to game animal farming because I believe that it is an affront to fair chase hunting, I think that if consumers are advised of the possibility, small as it can be, of contamination I am ok with it. But as with the food industry, whenever there is a possibility of exposure to humans severe measures are taken.

This sounds like asian carp and the emerald ash borer in the sense that there;s nothing to be done about this but I'm also puzzled because there doesn't seem to be evidence that CWD is going to destroy the deer herd. Here in Michigan we have a few cases. I don't hunt, my problem with the deer is there are so many that driving at night is extreemly risky. Deer car accidents here cost $100 million per year and the hunters pay none of that in their iicense fees. I wish the deer were not managed by the state unless the hunters want to reimburse the insurance company claims. If not then let private landowners manage as they think best. I beieve the result of private land owner management would be fewer deer but more big bucks, the way things should be anyway. BTW, I don't hunt.
