The High Road has a special guest today: Dr. Christopher Seabury! Dr. Seabury is the leading scientist for the North American Deer Registry and a professor of pathobiology at Texas A&M! We’ve got Keith Warren here interviewing him about some amazing new genetic discoveries that help explain why deer get chronic wasting disease and which ones are more or less likely to contract the disease. These discoveries are rapidly altering the playing field in regards to CWD susceptibility, and Dr. Seabury explains it all. Right here, right now.

It is in fact a prion disease! Prions are misfolded proteins that can damage other proteins. Think of it like cancer but specifically for proteins. www.cdc.gov/prions/cwd/index.html

We have WMU maps in Alberta, and CWD positive zones used to be in the east of the province, in the past couple years a bunch of new zones including the one I live in went from optional to mandatory head turn in for CWD testing.

Gonna have to get more comfortable chairs, as after 25 minutes he began looking for a better position to relax on. Thanks for the updates...sad news regarding the EHD outlook for getting a handle on it.

I’m going to ask a question!! Why can’t they come up with a solution to add to corn or other protein feed that some hunters feed to deer where feeding is legal?? It would help our deer to keep them from getting sick and cure the ones that are sick with CWD.

Has someone else repeated these studies and come out with the same results? I am very excited about your findings, however with the false reporting of news and scientific studies I need more references.

You guys actually look more intelligent that I would have expected. When I think ' hunting ', I think of.......cavemen basically. At least the hunters who do it for " sport ". There ARE actually a few reasons why I would hunt, but they are very few and far between. If there was an invasive species that was doing real harm to the eco-system.....perhaps if lived in Asia and there was a man eating tiger.......or if I was going with out food. But guys (typically guys) who find FUN in needlessly killing animals, I cant understand finding pleasure in needlessly harming another being. Interestingly though, it genuinely DOES seem to be a very human trait. Which really is quite an intresting question......WHY are humans so violent and destructive, what part of our brain causes, is it our primate brain or reptilian part of our brain. I do notice other primates are quite violent and destructive.

It's a lot more than just the killing of an animal , and even when we do harvest an animal it is filling our freezers with healthy meats to feed our family. You kind of seem interested , I would suggest if u know a hunter that would take u out on a hunting trip to experience the entire meaning of the sport, you should consider trying it. You will see that it is much much more than just killing. For one example I have sat in my tree stand and just watched the deer for hours just to be out in nature and see how these animals Interact in their environment , it's actually very peaceful and serene. I will usually harvest 2 whitetail deer per year to feed my family but I hunt several dozen times in a year. So possibly 2 out of 30-40 hunts where I actually take a deer. The other part of hunting is the comrodery with family and friends and the sharing of stories of our experiences while hunting. It's a place to go and clear your mind of the stresses that life brings. Give it a try you might really enjoy it.

Do you eat meat ? How do you think the cows feel or fish
@SA77888
@SA77888 2 жыл бұрын
@@gargar8196 I did make the distinction, between hunters who do it because they need food and hunters who enjoy the ' sport ' of killing animals. To answer your question, yes I do eat meat, but I dont ENJOY the fact that an animal had to die and look forward to killing another animal. I could never imagine looking forward to needlessly taking the life of an animal.

@@garyhughes7737 Thank you for that thoughtful reply Gary. Edit: Im sorry for my rude comment guys. Its something I feel passionatley about, but I realize the subject is more complex than anti hunt ppl believe. I hate needles harm, cruelty and killing of animals. But I acknoledge some hunting is necissieary. Thanks for your reasonable replies.
