Abseiling [rappelling for your American fans] is kind of fun, but it's very unnatural feeling and it's completely counter intuitive to trust your life to a rope just fed round a figure of eight shaped lump of metal. However, abseiling down a climbing wallwith big crash mats at the bottom can let you learn to trust the equipment and find out what happens if you let go entirely, etc etc and makes abseiling on actual rocks where actually falling would be fatal much less stressful...

I have no mental fear of heights, but physically I react very strongly it's bizarre. So I really am not frightened but my body shakes for ages if I get even a few feet off the ground. Once I was hanging Christmas decorations at a friend's place and because I'm very tall I only needed to stand on a chair to do it. Just being on that chair sent me into full shakes until well into the next day, like I couldn't write anything down at all for 24 hours because my hands were shaking so much. Does anyone else get this?

I identify with this so hard! I work at a summer camp during the summers and I have to help run the high ropes course and climbing wall and when I'm up there I shake like crazy but I'm totally calm. But literally everyone else on staff is the same way even the people who only do the high stuff, so we definitely aren't alone in this.

+Matthew Lauder That's good to know but it's such a shame because I love things like that. I remember this one time when I was about 13, I was at like an outdoor retreat and we had to build a tower out of milk crates and like use each other to all climb to the top. It was pretty high up but I managed to ruin everything because my shaky leg at the top of the tower kicked the whole thing over and there were just 5 kids dangling from harnesses in the air- all of them kinda mad at me.

Came here to say that - I think it helps if you've belayed for a while yourself. If you've never belayed before you won't know how easy it is to hold someone in the rope down position, I've quite comfortably held someone (low down) with my thumb and two fingers in one hand (not recommended, btw). Also re: gloves, you need them for abseiling when you're controlling the rope yourself because things get super hot and finger trappy.

the "oooooookay" bit at the end ! I feel you girl I feel you ! I've never been afraid of heights and one day I was out with a group of kids I worked with at that time and we went to one of those climbing parks where you have different obstacles in different heights between trees and I was like "pssssh how hard can this be". Little did I know that 30 minutes later I'd be 10 meters over the ground shaking my ass off trying to smile to not scare the already crying kids behind me even more, climbing through a net with a lot of holes, grabbing onto some ropes for the dear live of me. I was 100% sure this was were I'd die and they'd had to cut my cold body out of this damn net. Never have I ever felt this amount of pure panic. Constantly talking to myself to make sure I'd breath and keep going. Even thinking about it now makes me anxious. I am incredibly proud of you for doing this, but let's just make sure none of us has to do this kind of stuff ever agin. xx

Oh my goodness, I definitely know how it feels to be in that kind of situation!!!! I also have a fear of (falling from) heights and it is so bad that if I feel like I'm going to fall from almost any height higher than the roof of my house I will instantly go into shock and either start crying, go numb, or both. So as you can imagine, I am not the world's most roller-coaster-loving girl and I get picked on A LOT by my family when we go to the amusement parks. BUT, I am working my very hardest to go mind-over-matter because I feel like I am missing out on having a lot of fun. Hope you can get over your fears too, Dodie. I understand in my head that I'm most likely safe and everything's fine, but I have bad vertigo and when I go up high it triggers really bad dizziness. People always say it's an excuse for me being scared and so a 'choice' (and damn right I'm scared as well) but it's somewhat difficult to abseil when the room is spinning and you're at risk of passing out....! You're so unbelievably brave Dodie, I could never have done that, especially seeing how upset and scared you were. Well done you for pushing through, it's pretty inspirational! Also, I have a fear of injuring myself and I hate anything. Any form of skating (ice, roller, boarding), I can't even go on climbing frames and sometimes I feel fine and I do it, but then I'm like "lol no this is awful" because I'm scared I'm gonna land wrong and break my leg or ankle or something. I did abseiling before, I couldn't do the whole "pro, stand and walk down thing". I had to shimmy off of the side because they wouldn't let me go back down by the stairs. Poor dodie, I understand how you feel and I'm glad you understand how I feel.

Personally I'm not afraid of heights at all if I'm just depending on a building or a strong structure (like being at the top of a tower or a mountain and looking down), however if I feel like my position depends on me and my physical abilities (like rock climbing, or those tree ropes amusement parks), I just lose it. I was fine when I was younger, but a few years ago, I realised even though I had no problem abseiling along the side of a mountain (because I felt like the harness was "in charge"), I was unable to climb rocks without panicking, because I felt too weak. Same thing last summer when I went to a tree amusement park with my friends, I ended up just taking pictures of them instead of doing the climbing haha

as someone who climbs at least once a week and is also afraid of heights I would like to comment upon being let down. the thing you like more is called autobelay and the thing you were doing was toproping. I guess it's personal preference and depends on who is belaying you but toproping feels so much more safe to me because if you fall then you stop. about the knots in abseiling, dunno if they told you, but the important ones are self tightening which means the more weight you put on them the tighter they get and they won't come out. I know that personally, knowing more makes me less scared of things. hope this helps anyone afraid of rock climbing, abseiling, or heights in general. also would like to add that I wasn't afraid of heights at all until I watched someone fall 50 feet and get really badly injured and that really messed me up for a while and still makes it hard for me to do certain things.

I'm happy that you stayed strong, and I wish I could've gave you a hug telling you it's okay and you didn't have to do it. But you were so brave! Good job

That footage was actually really adorable thanks to Evan, him trying so hard to comfort you while he loses his shit. Whatta good pal.

I can't imagine what that must have been like! I'm not a fan of heights either and also discovered that while rock climbing. Good job for pushing through, I don't think I could have!

I can't stand at the top of a ladder without feeling like I'm going to fall off, so I understand how you feel Dodie. You were very brave, I wouldn't abseil down anything for all the money in the world :)

I'm so proud of you for doing it!! And yes, it's checked off and you never have to do it again! I know how this feels; I did something similar once when I was a kid with a high dive. *not fun* But I did it! Way to go Dodie!!

I love how you start the audio for little snippets before the visuals, it's really clever and effective

I love how Evan supported you the whole way. You two are so lucky to have such caring friends.

I respect that you went further than your mental wall and you broke through and pushed it as far as you did. As a former rock climber, the gig did do it right by slowly working you up to that height great job on both sides

This whole video i wanted to hug you! I know Evan's normally the funny guy cracking jokes but even him doing that you can still sense he's worried about you. You're amazing for doing it though!!

On the bright side, you did it! Even if you were terrified, you managed to do it. I know exactly what it's like having one traumatic experience suddenly bring about a phobia. I never used to be afraid of spiders, then I moved somewhere where every autumn the house gets invaded with huge ones, and now I am afraid of all them regardless of size. Ugh, brains right?

Thank you for talking about this. After watching the CocaCola video (where you were very obviously not fine and yet did go down) I was worrying quite a bit about how and if you had actually given your conscious consent to do this and not being pressured into doing it by the team or whoever. I'm still not sure about anything but seeing you talk about it and still speaking so positively about the job puts my mind at ease at least a little bit. Hope you are well & please don't ever let someone pressure you into doing something, no matter who they are or whatever the reasons. Otherwise you might just end up with yet another fear to add to your list. But you probably already know that. It's not really my place to tell you any of this, so I'm sorry. But I was really worried and I wanted to thank you for making that video that helped clear up at least some of the confusion. Have a wonderful day, I wish you the very best (:

Aww poor Doodie... I notice you very nervous in the Coca Cola video, but I never knew how hard it actually was for you ;-; I'm glad you can share and actually tell the story behind it!

This literally the BEST story in the entire world. I've a fear of this too but this storytelling had me laughing so hard. Aaah life, I can't, I'm still cry laughing ! Brilliant.

Since bravery is not the absence of fear, but overcoming fear, I think you demonstrated incredible bravery in doing the first abseil at all. Or possibly demonstrated an unhealthy willingness to do things you feel extremely uncomfortable doing because you're expected to. Be safe, do what's right for you.

"a house and a half" is my new favorite measurement. also, yeah heights are TERRIFYING i climbed up this really tall like 200 ft light house the other week and i was shaking so hard i almost fell on my way back down it was so scary. tbh id probably do something like what you did and be super excited bc i love adventure type stuff but just looking down from really high is the absolute worst.

I laughed so hard, and Evan was too on the video. But I think you could get over your fear of hight's you just have to work with it. I did get over mine and it was very hard and scary. Love you Dodie.

I just watched the video again, and you can really be proud of yourself. A fear of heights is a very normal thing to have, and even in the video it looks like you overcame a massive hurdle there. You did really well, especially at the climbing wall. The people securing you a really looked like they were doing a professional and methodical job in the video. All the security measures I'd normally take when doing a top rope and an abseil were there as well as a few extra's (mainly back-ups). I don't know if they did this, but usually when I take someone with a fear of heights for a bit of a climb, I try to explain the entire securing routine, and what precautions I'm taking to keep them safe. Usually that makes them feel more at ease with the situation. Did they do something similar for you?

Dodie, you are so much braver than me. On my year 7 residential we had to do abseiling and it was only a couple meters high but I couldn't do it. I was in tears but I kept saying I'd do it but right at the last second I refused. I am so terrified of heights
