If you're thinking about calling Eric and leaving a message, don't bother him, bother me. I will give you the auto advice you deserve. For example, here he sprays the terminal nuts to loosen them up a little. That is a waste of penetrant and could damage your lungs. To safely get some purchase, lever your wrench against the other terminal. Battery terminals are located specifically for you to do this. If you get sparks it means you're not holding the wrench tight enough against the terminals.

Did this on a new Traverse the other day... Step one remove floor mat, move seat rearward, remove plastic trim ( at zero degrees mind you) remove floor cover, disconnect battery current sensor, 3 other random wires and terminals with wires just long enough to reach the posts and then try to lift out 80- lb battery that you can just get the tips of your fingers on, swear, throw a few tools, install new battery and the then go tell customer car is done and it was a piece of cake :)

The original step 1 should have been driving on past the Chrysler dealership. That's ingenious, using the battery as an impact-absorbing feature in the event of a left-front collision. Altima, Accord and Camry battery location? Right under the hood. It CAN be done as long as you aren't having to adapt another make's platform because you don't have the money to develop your own.

10 years on a battery holy @#$& Batman! That's a dream here in Phoenix. We get 1-3 years on average in my experience depending on the vehicle. The heat dramatically shortens their life. Having to do this that often would just make me even madder lol. Guess it's a trade-off to not have the salt/rust. Whoever thought up that location for a battery was clearly not thinking about serviceability, or the little safety item you touched on there. Thanks for the videos!
@kalanikaau1
@kalanikaau1 6 жыл бұрын
Many years ago, while in a junior college auto mechanic program, we were taught to always disconnect the battery negative cable first ( provided the vehicle was negative ground.) Through the years as a mechanic you did run into situations where it was more convenient to disconnect the positive cable first. Once you've done "arc welding" by somehow grounding the wrench while doing so, you learn to be very careful. The practice is not taboo, you just need to know the consequences, generating sparks near a battery can lead to "kaboom" !

It was a long time ago, but I remember a story about how a bumper had to be removed in order to change the license plate light bulb. I don't know whether or not it was made up, but even 50+ years ago they were complaining about the lunacy the bean counters and engineers made for car owners and mechanics. I guess we can lay a little blame on the government's rules for crash safety while we're at it. Thanks Eric!

Done correctly it could be very useful for those desperate for his awesome skill set (which is virtually impossible to find) and could be a good profit center. Would have to figure out pricing - but reserving 30 minutes a day for consulting services might actually make some sense.

Hmmm ... SMA frisbees! Just got that idea looking at the hub again. 😉 MAN! Automakers make me mad. Batteries in the trunk, under the rear seats ... and now in the FENDER WELL?? Geeze Louise!! What a fantastic spot for Northeastern vehicles, right in the salt blast. Fairly certain that plastic liner ain't gonna do S!&$ when you're rolling down a slushy, brine and salt-laden highway at 50+ mph. It'll just sit on the battery terminals and work it's crusty magic. BRILLIANT. I can just see a group of engineers around a table playing beer pong, and designing this turd, when someone goes, "Aww s!&% ... we forgot about the battery!" " Ahh, just stuff it in the fender - it'll be fine for the warranty period". 😡

Not sure if the old one was OEM or aftermarket, but somebody was not thinking when they put in a battery that would need periodic water level checks. How many times do you thing the level was checked? May be bone dry, necessitating this replacement video. Bravo to Eric for putting in a sealed unit, as should have been to start with.

I've seen the trunk mounted batteries and the ones you get to through the passenger footwell(Ferrari IIRC), but this one was new. So glad all my vehicles have had them in one of the front corners up top where they belong. Guessing that car would be a real PITA to jumpstart.

Wonder what the battery gestapo would say to jump starting a Cedar Rapids paver with a arc welder? Yeah that happened and I moved the controls to the other side of the paver from the battery to start it.

Not the only cars Chrysler put the battery in the wheel well, recall Plymouth did it also. I tape up tools with rubber splicing tape to use on positive battery posts.

With a minimal amount of brain power,they could have put the battery in he other way around so the negative would be the one nearest .In a crash which would probably ground the front one first,it wouldn't matter because the whole thing will be smashed anyway causing acid to be every where and a fire would ,more than likely result

At the 10:00 minute mark If you read the fine print it says Advance installs batteries on MOST vehicles. Something people aren't too happy about when they come in and to have a battery installed and find this out.

You can always use a set of electrically insulated wrenches (spanners) that you can get from your local electrical component supplier and they're good for a 1000volt

I did a 2015 Ford Escape battery once and you HAVE to disconnect the positive first. Then you can slide the battery out of it's hole and get to the negative. If you can, always do the negative first, but if you can't, don't worry.

It seems sometimes that the people who design cars either don't understand or don't care that it will someday require service. As a side note as someone who went to NIU, I love the bag of DeKalb corn behind you.

Back in the '60s and 70's, my brother had a gas station with service bays. I don't know what brand, but he had a nice little set of wrenches (5/8 to 3/8, I think) with some kind of coating on the handle shaft and a nice little box to keep them in. He liked to call them his "electric" wrenches. Fancy! He made the purchase after welding a watch band to his wrist. He still has the scars to prove it!

Were the cables long enough to allow the battery to be flipped when reinstalled? That would place the negative terminal on the near side.

What a convenient location for the battery! At least it's well protected by the bumper skin... seems this location could result in a minor fender bender turning into a disabled vehicle!

I have done this job before on the avengers . And no autozone nor advance would touch it . At the time I couldn’t find a helpful video . Personally when I did it I was able to reach in with a ratchet and do the ground first with battery slide a little . I was paranoid about grounding out my tools . Next time I’d just go your route and be careful . Good stuff . I think you should start doing the year range of the vehicle so people use it for specific searches . Might raise your following ! Good work

Afraid not, we at Advance Auto can not install this type of configuration. Prior to purchasing the battery we would inform the customer that the install can not be performed by us due to it's complexity. Our in store look up flags it as "need profesional installation".
