Pumping air into the exhaust - THE SOLUTION TO POLLUTION IS DILUTION
@macro8206 жыл бұрын
Not really how it works but sure, the earth is flat anyway
@bobl786 жыл бұрын
it gives extra air into the converter plus injection and ignition timing are set to super late and rich = unburned fuel in exhaust ..the extra air makes it combust in the exhaust / converter which heats up much quicker like that .... not really a dilution...
@opl5006 жыл бұрын
Helps the catalytic converter to "burn" what's left in the exhaust to CO2 and H2O. Gotta love regulations.

My 1984 Camaro Z28 has an air pump and metal pipes to each manifold. These corrode and are tough to replace. Best to cut the pipe off the ferrule and use a socket to turn them out. Funny, they pump exhaust into the intake EGR and pump air into the exhaust AIR.

That was a common problem with 5 cylinder Volvos. The stuck valve would also cause condensation in the hose going to the air pump, eventually filling it up with water. Happened to me twice. Ended up drilling some weep holes into the pump to prevent that.

Just remember those scan tools that perform those types of actions can be well over $2,000 and above. The sad thing is with vehicles becoming more electronic, if you want to be a mechanic, you will need those types of high level scan tools to diagnose those types of problems.

Man that system reminds me of the older BMW air systems. Same vacuum cleaner sounding air pump along with the mechanical valve. Even fails the same way. Stuck valve. BMW's valves though, stick open and the exhaust back flows into the air pump motor and burns it out quick.. Changed one on my sons car and the air pump motor looked like a charcoal briquette.

Only certain Chryslers with 50 state emissions have A.I.R on them, and they only used them for a short time. They are only supposed to turn on briefly on a cold start to get the cat woken up. 1 thing of note, if you get 1 in with lean codes and high short term counters, check to make sure the pump is off. I've had a couple that were stuck on that were flooding the o2s with air, and neither had AIR codes! The fix for each was replacing that fuse/relay center module which Chrysler is famous for.. ( the name slips my mind cuz it's late and I'm having a brain fart ) Feel better soon!

it may have been good it was stuck open because on a cold start it’s should be open to get cleaner air to mix into the exhaust.. i think it only runs for 90 seconds then shuts off. i’m relating it to the air/smog pump that only runs for 90 then shuts off and maybe closes the valve once it’s ran it’s 90 seconds so you may have been fixed it i understand that it would risk burning everything in front of it and is worth the couple dollar bills thank you good work on ur before after video hope u don’t feel ill like that again
