Dodge Avenger Electrical Problems - Loose Battery Connection

This answered so many questions for me. I seem to intermittently lose power, sometimes while driving. I hate that they've made something as simple as a battery so difficult to get at.

I had the same issue. But the energy loss would affect the lights, the dash, and then the ABS...a chain reaction of electrical codes came up. All it was was a loose terminal nut at the top of the engine where the battery connects to.

My car did the same thing tonight I had to leave it in a parking lot until I can get to it tomorrow. Battery light came on, then ABS then every other light came on then my car died and I couldn’t turn it back over. I literally just put a brand new battery in earlier today because it was being faulty. And every avenger owner knows how much of a pain it is to change a damn battery on this mf. But I’m really hoping I can just go tighten up something that might be loose and pray for the best

So what are the signs of a bad alternator? I have a 2012 dodge avenger and before my car died the dash was going crazy flickering and a little battery symbol came on my dash. Now everything is dead !! When i put the key in and turn it nothing comes on no lights no dash lights i cant even lock the car when i press the button on my car door i can't even open the trunk when i press the button by my steering wheel! Im suspecting the alternator!

My car has been having this problem i took the battery in to auto zone to charge changed the alternator and cranked right up. The next day it wouldnt start so i keep researching and found this video and now i find that my cable looks the same as in this video broken from the connecter. I hope changing the wire fixes this problem

I have a 2009 Dodge avenger. I have replaced the alternator 3 times and the test keep coming out to be 12.30. I replaced the terminals and cleaned all points of contact. Why won’t any new alternator keep a charge?

@Lehew please help me I am living in my car this winter (Dodge Avenger 2014; winter 2024). I replaced the battery and then I replaced the alternator but I keep losing power. I haven’t messed with any wires yet. I threw on the new battery (650cca) and immediately it read at 11.5V when iirc it should be at 14.7 with the engine running. Now remember, I changed the alternator and the battery now. The starter is fine because I can place a jump pack in it and it fires strongly. I’m exhausting a lot of resources trying to find the solution and cannot get it to a mechanic

I have a 2011. It’s kinda strange. Same set up. I put jump box on and it will crank up but it immediately dies after I pull jump box. Also, I give it throttle and it will not keep it going at all. Shits right off. Then I have zero power? To the inside of vehicle, lights, dash, trunk, etc… What are your thoughts?? I was thinking maybe multiple issue. He said it’s a new battery just installed a months ago. I am assuming pulley locking up somewhere or alternator as well….. But to not stay running at all with a new battery is some what strange?? Most of the time it will run on most all vehicles even with a bad Altenator for a couple minutes or a few seconds. Also I do not lose all power. After I hooked up scan tool I just had a battery low voltage code and that was with jump box engaged for some power. Thoughts? BTW greats video. Much better then mine 😂

Did you ever solve your issue? It sounds similar to mine and I've done everything except change my wiring for the negative ground that goes to my motor area. If it continues after today and changing that ground. I will have no clue where to look after lol.

@@TheWorldWithin27 bad alternator. Pain to remove moray move AC compressor. Not to bad. But it’s not the easiest. Maybe 2-3 hours

@@Swaggboyreek happy holidays. Yes. I have seen multiple starters and they all should do about the same. Try to match to the one you remove. It’s important and I would check all of your ground wires. I do know this vehicle has a frequent problem with the ground wire that was underneath from the relay box to the underside of the battery tray to the firewall. Also, a common issue is the ground wire that runs to the relay box from the battery terminal. Also what I do and have done is actually add a ground wire and run it directly from the battery to the motor, that seem to correct a lot of the problems with the charging or possibly run a ground wire directly from the battery to the alternator. This way you know you have a ground make sure you find a good ground spot for it. Also the ground wire that runs to the front of the Frame\fan assembly sometimes can get messed up on a lot of these and most any cars the braided ground wire. Clean them up very well with sandpaper. Put a little bit of dilute a grease and reinstall you should not have any more problems. I have some cool videos on my page. If you’ve ever checked them out I have a lot most of them are live in pretty messy to keep up with but if you scroll through them, I have some on this particular issue I believe, I’m not sure which video boss good luck. If you want to take a glance I don’t mind it but I can’t point you towards the right direction. I do all my videos live for the most part. It makes it a lot more interesting. That way people get a real understanding of what’s going on. I do have one on this particular vehicle when I replace this alternator, I showed exactly how I did it. For some reason it has not gotten very many views I thought it was a really good video, then again more a lot of people probably don’t even forward this job. I was able to access it through the top I believe never had to remove the AC compressor worked out a lot easier. I will say that definitely was a tight squeeze but the car ran perfect and they got all the way to Florida like they were trying to. Best of luck. I hope this helps. Thanks for the video I just got the charging light on but as I was watching the video I turned it off and on again and no light now I'll start with the wiring maybe poor contact somewhere

Did replacing the cable fix this issue? I have a 08 avenger, and it has a starting issue.. Jiggling the positive cable usually fixed it

Also. For my other comment. It’s appears to be a bad live wire to battery this is what would chase this on most vehicles? I was not aware if this has some type of shut down mode on it I work on a lot of different vehicles did you have it to know if that could be the case because I have zero power unless the jump box is hooked up that’s telling me that the battery is not properly generating the vehicle I can generate it and override it with my junk box but the alternator will not keep it going long enough it’s still can be related to the battery I’m thinking or connection going to the battery more than likely I just don’t know where to start here especially since the battery is in the stupidest spot ever . Smh. Just tell me your thoughts and where you may start in this type of situation I’m gonna do a video here myself in a little bit I’ll definitely get it situated I just needed to know if you had any suggestions I’ll tag you in it if it works out. Still thinking about positive terminal connection I know the jump terminals up top are very loose?? Think maybe this could be the culprit? Ima pull the battery when I can in a bit. My 2012 dodge avenger just started doing this, even one of my headlights is completely off. When i would come to a stop my headlights would dim really bad, almost to where it would look like i was flashing them. I know it cant be my alternator cause i just put a new one like a year and a half ago, so ima just check the battery connections first

I cant get mines tight due to the car being in a accident when i brought the car from a dealership and they didnt tell me they kept it on hush and sold it so how can i get it tight no one can seem to get my headlights flicker the Raido cuts off want even stay on i just got a new battery 😫

I had a similar issue but it was due to severely rusted corroded bolts so you will have to take the bumper off now, its a real PIA but possible. I wanna know who (engineer & who signed off on the design) thought this shitty location was a good idea? Anyway I had to cut the terminals and replace when I made room.... also call the dealership and hold them reliable.

My 2013 3.6L avenger was shutting off while driving no brakes no lights nothing. Tried again and inside lights go insane and shut off. So I ended up getting a new battery and alternator. Got both tested and both bad. Dodge loves to make everything a pain in the 🍑 to take out and put in so have fun getting the alternator past the a/c lol Anyway right after car just randomly shut off on highway. Of course I was pissed! Noticed with this car if there is any small corrosion or if the cables are not super tight the car will act up. To any one having this problem I would go through all the connections and make sure nothing is loose/dirty especially if your car shuts off on a bump. I also noticed this seems to happen to avenger owners 160,000 -190,000. My theory is dodge's dumb decision to put the battery under the tire causes wire connection failure and corrosion to the cables. Which is why I think the owner of the vehicle in the video has a new cable but obviously the owner got the wrong cable. So when your head lights start dimming or you notice any power leak at all I would check the cables. If you don't check or change them then just like every avenger owner you will be changing the over worked alternator and possibly battery around 160-180,000 miles. This should be a recall when your car shuts down at 70 mph. Obviously this will not be everyone's problem/solution but if you read this now you might be able to save your time and alternator. 🖕Dodge
