Thanks for the video man! I replaced the leak detector, reset the cpu, and it popped up again. Just changed the purge valve. Gas cap looks good. If that damn code pops up again, guess I'll be replacing hoses and charcoal thingy

Great Video! Detailed visual explanation... Thanks! I've had my Durango to several shops including dodge dealer and they all tell me they did smoke test but could not find leak. P0456 / and they charge me for diagnostics, clear code and tell me to see if comes back. BS! of course it comes back. I usually clear the code with my scanner to get through inspection. / I can only assume they're not checking anything. / I've lost faith, now I try to do my own repairs but sometimes it might be nice to rely on a mechanic!

Did you figure out the issue? I have a 2016 durango and had this issue twice, first it was the hose going to the purge valve, a year later the issue came back, i replaced the purge valve itself and the light came back on smh

Good info. My mother has a 2010 Dodge Journey with 2 codes (P0456 & P0457). Check engine light & gas cap is on. Got a gas cap from the dealer & cleared codes. Both check engine light & gas cap came back. I’m gonna have my mechanic do a smoke test. Thanks for the info. 👍

i had this same problem for 4yrs and turned out to be seal at gas tank was bad causing my leak. Had whole gas tank replaced, has been good for a yr now and same code just popped back on.

I had that exact code (P0456) and it was the ESIM part for my 2012 Dodge Ram 1500 5.7 Hemi that fixed my check engine light issue. Part was about 30 bucks and it took me less than 45 minutes from start to finish to swap out this part. That includes backing the truck up on ramps, chocking the front tires, removing the bad part, replacing it and driving the truck off the ramps, putting up my flathead screwdriver, plyers and chock blocks. Turned out, I didn't need the screwdriver. For me, the hardest part was reaching the tab to pull in to twist off the ESIM and getting the new part lined up to twist it back on. Other than that, it was easy as pie! It does come with an O-ring but, I didn't use it cause it wouldn't go on with me trying to put it on there too. Not to mention, when I pulled the old one off, there wasn't an O-ring (unless it fell off somewhere and I didn't see it). Exact steps I did: Used the plyers to pull the electrical 'dongle' tab off as well as to pull the hose off. Using the plyers on the hose, I placed them on the hose where the hose fits on the connecting tube and just rocked it back and forth until it came loose. I then laid on my right side and used my left hand (awkward yes but it worked best for me) to reach up using my thumb to push the tab in, then twisting counterclockwise until it came off. I then did the same in reverse order to put everything back on. Then, I put my tools and ramps back in their normal spot, fired up the truck to see if the check engine light was on or not. Was VERY happy to see the light did not come back on. Even let it run for about 5 minutes and the light did not come back. Now I can get it inspected so I can get my tags before December. Question, I am getting a p0456 and can smell gas vapors when parked in the garage, but I only get the gas smell when I have a full tank...anything that is 3/4 tank or lower, no gas smell.

This is rare, however, you might have a tiny crack that is located higher than 3/4 on the tank. Consider making your own smoke machine? or partially dropping the tank and inspect?

Can find a dern purge valve.. On my 2003 dodge caravan the dang engine light with code po456 came on.. leak dtection pump is not like that white amazon module and nothing visible back by the tank.. Where is.any of this... only thing I can find is leak detection pump underneath drivers side by where the lower control arm is.

Problems with the gas pump clicking off usually point to a vent valve issue.

I've never used compressed air in the EVAP system, but it is likely ok as long as the pressure is not too high.

I got the same code yesterday. I got a new gas cap today, how long does it take for the engine light to disappear if it was the cap? Im bringing it tomorrow to the mechanic but i just want to make sure im not jumping into mechanic when the code will eventually disappear if the driving cycle is not yet completed.

If fixed, the code should eventually clear, but it is usually cleared with an OBDII scan tool. 2010 and newer vehicles, the code will be permanent and need a drive cycle, but the light will go off.

Hey I just replaced the gas cap and pulled the battery for a few minutes. The check engine light went away and so did the trouble code except for a permanent one that my scanner cannot clear. What is a drive cycle and how long should it take? Should I even worry if the cel is not on anymore even though the code reader still shows the po456 permanent code?

@@AndSerts33 Each vehicle has a different drive cycle, which can be Googled to see what needs to be done. Usually, just driving around for 1-2 weeks will clear it, but if it needs cleared sooner, Google to see what the computer needs done.
