For those wondering if you dont have the trigger wire flashing. I changed my crank position sensor and got spark back. Really great video!

(Follow up from my message yesterday) I changed the ignition coil today and it fired right up! It felt like within a half of a crank it was running and running Absolutely Amazing. Definitely better than it has in the past 6-7 years. KEEP IN MIND that this truck has been sitting for Approximately 5 years! So the gas, fuel pump, plugs, wires, distributor, exc. have been sitting for that long aswell. Thank you again for the video. 🇺🇸😎👊💪😎🇺🇸

2002 Durango 5.9 crank no start. Coil signal wire is not 'fluttering'. Key on is solid at 12+ volts for a second or so, as it should, then off. When cranking LED test light attached to coil trigger wire is solid . . . . at 12 to 10 volts per trusty Harbor Freight voltmeter. Instruments show no problems. Coil itself tests good, even tried a second coil - same behavior. Checked each and every fuse. Went through what I think are all the obvious factors. Coil outlet terminal shows a sold 12v when cranking, but no sparking to ground when using spark plug tester. Any insights welcome.

Ugh!!! I really need to try that on my Dakota. The testing of the voltage and the signal wires on the harness. Already replaced coil, plugs, wires, cap, and rotor. Started looking at the relays, but did not think of checking the power to the coil. Really liked the high speed, low drag tools used to check this several points of interest. Thanks for the tips. All thumbs up!!!

The problem was isolated to the ECM. Pin C17. Apparently after so long the pins tend to become loose, causing this sort of problem.

Excellent Video! Explains how to check for power and a ground signal trigger to the ignition coil while cranking the engine over. I have used a test light to check for the ground trigger from the PCM but it is hard to see as it is really dim so the LED light is a great tool to have but a test light will work as well in a pinch. Thanks for the video!

Thanks for the nice video Rich. Did you run a current limiting resistor in series with the LED to ensure it didn't burn up, if so what value? Also what voltage was the control voltage at, if you know. I currently working on a 2003 no start, cranks fine, just don't have spark. Changed the Coil and the Distributor Module, so I think it's a CAM Position Sensor but I liked your little LED set up so I'd like to build one myself. Thanks for sharing. Best Wishes & Blessings. Nicely diagnosed and repaired mr richpin :-)) That coil must be driven by low current pulses for you to use an led, a good safe load :-) Ive found a 21 watt bulb on wires to be very handy if a commercial test light isnt present, i do like to load the circuit up to see if the voltage drops so indicating a bad joint or faulty switch/module, good for checking trailer lighting sockets :-))

I have a 1997 Dakota V6 / auto FWD that will just shut down while driving. Initial troubleshooting codes indicated a bad coil when replaced codes indicated a failed cam sensor then misfire between 5-6 and 3-4 at different times. I replaced the plugs wires distributor cap and rotor and rechecked timing. All was good for a few days then the shut down while driving returned but with no codes . Restart was difficult but it did restart and ran fine again. I was told to check the crank sensor and I replaced it. The shut down problem has now returned again. Does any one have suggestions … what about the ASD relay ? …or Fuel pump relay? They both click when turned on and a cold start is good. The restart after a shut down is difficult. Note: the truck has 84K miles and is a New England vehicle, with the typical rust and corrosion issues.

I have no signal at the trigger wire which leads me to think something is wrong with the computer but what has more confusing is at the green wire with the red/orange stripe that should have battery power (which the schematics says it should have in this video confirms it) has ground instead, does anyone know why this is? So, both sides of the coil are positive; how can that be?
@oliverogarcia59728 жыл бұрын
it gets ground where it mounts
@patrickwayne37014 жыл бұрын
Rusco321, the coil gets power on the green with the red trace, then, the ground, which is controlled by the ecm, is triggered by the inputs of the crank position trigger, and the cam position trigger, which are located at the back of the engine on the passenger side for the crank trigger sensor, and inside the distributor cap for the cam position sensor. If either of those two are failed, then the ecm will not send the proper signal to the coil on the black wire with the white trace.

Jesus Christ ! On this particular "Ignition System", after he found "No Spark" with the Spark Tester from the Spark Plug Wire, the next step would be to put the Spark Tester on the disconnected Ignition Coil Wire...His results woulda been "No Spark" coming from the Ignition Coil. Background: Southern California Smog Repair Tech.

I'm afraid your not understanding the dodge Dakota year 1992 ignition system, he is checking the cam timing sensor including the trucks ECM. Southern California retired diesel mechanic. I own one of these great reliable work horse truck, everything under the hood is controlled by the, known as the Electronic control unit, or Module hence, ECM I'm not sure as why he's using a Led test light for the ECM side of the Coil sencing terminal, at a closer look I see he's pluged the two wires back into the coil after inserting a paper clip on the ECM sencor wire, I'm curious why would a LED light be necessary for checking the, better known as the brain.

During the period of 'no start',,, have you determined whether is has proper fuel pressure and spark? Several of my 5.2L and one of my 3.9L trucks had fuel pumps that got weak and the engine wouldn't start hot, but WOULD START once it cooled off to ambient temperatures. Basically, you need to find out which system is failing before you know what to replace.
