I am so glad I found your video! Other Dakota brake videos weren't the same caliper configuration. It took roughly 3 hours and repeated trips to the computer for more instruction to complete the driver side as it was a learning process for me, 1 hour for the passenger side. Toughest part was getting that darn rattle bracket put back in place. I did, however, follow another viewers comment as to the order of putting the brake pads onto the caliper after using the C-clamp. Using the old worn inside pad in place to compress the piston made that process easier. I'm pretty proud of myself at 65 with arthritis in my hands and feet to accomplish this task and save a couple of hundred bucks to boot! Thanks, again, Michael!

Not sure if anyone mentioned this but your brakes are a sealed system. When you do your brakes and put on new pads make sure your brake fluid is at the full line. As your brakes wear down, the pistons come out and the fluid level drops. Don’t add fluid. It’s not burning or evaporating off. When your fluid is low, your pads need to be replaced. When you put the new pads on, the fluid level will go back to full. If you add fluid thinking it’s low, you get what happens in this video, you replace the pads and the reservoir over flows.

Thank you for the great video. I just finished the rotors and brakes on my 1998 Dodge Dakota. Just a note to others that are doing this on a 98 Dakota. My truck did not have the “anti rattle spring” you removed first. Also, my drivers side calipers boot bolts used the 7mm hex whereas the passenger side used a hex wrench one size smaller, the 7mm was too big. When doing this have a full set of hex’s available in case this happens to you. I also appreciate the great camera angles in this video. It was well demonstrated brake job. I like the lubrication details. I used the orange “Brake Quiet” goo as you demonstrated because I hate squeaky-brakes, I figured it was worth the 5 dollars to make sure I do not get metal on metal noise. This brake job was so easy and only cost me $70 for a pair of rotors and ceramic brake pad from RockAuto. I believe with this video and a free loaner set of tools from Advance Auto parts store anyone can replace their own rotors and pads. Thanks again for the video!!!

You might want to take the old pad and rest it against the piston, then use the clamp. That’s what I do and it works great. Sometimes, the clamp can damage the piston without using the old brake pad. Good video though.

I liked the video and I echo the other comments. One item not mentioned is that you should have collapsed the diaphram in the cap to your master cylinder before putting it back on. This allows it to expand and contract with fluid levels in the resevoir. PS-Now I need you to make a video of replacing upper and lower ball joints and sway control arms!

Very nice video. I think it would be easier to retract the caliper piston if you did not put the outer shoe on first. Also your attractive assistant should be wearing protective boots on a job like that. Dropping a rotor on those pretty toes would hurt a whole lot. I like the fact you mention the tools needed and sizes of wrenches like that 7 mm Allen.

You shouldn't use rotor cleaner on new rotors if there glazed rotors. Helps turn down brakes if aligned correctly. Without damage to rotor it will heat rotor up. Most are and often cleaner will mess up brake pad when its wet as it coats but not actually come off when whipped clean Whiped since its a concentrate cleaner they make here. Don't spray vehicle as well were rust is coming from on vehicles. PB blast does same thing and wd4. If you spray vehicle without de- mounting use oil on area and whip it off with oil leave excess oil on it as it will cover the chemical for cleaning and just tell person or whip again then use engine oil to coat area if done correctly paint only may peel off use gloves.

Thanks for the video. One question, where do y'all live? Your front suspension looks like it's about to rust apart. Not being picky, but if you didn't put the outer brake pad on first, it would've been easier to put the C-clamp on to compress the piston.

@@DIYwithMichaelBorders Turns outs that for proper repair ill need new steering knuckles, the spots where the pad end fingers have wore down the posts( should advise to look for this to veiwers) This allows the the whole caliper to tilt down, lowering the the spring clip to grind into the rotor and as well the rotor to grind into inside the top of the caliper.. My improvised repair was shimming between the pad fingers and the posts with aluminum sheet metal from old race car.

@@elitesoldier7151 Thanks for the follow up. Before drilling it out, you can cover the star-bit you used with a rubber band or two and firmly press it into the bolt and turn it. The rubber band will add a good amount of grip and hopefully help you unscrew stripped bolt. If that doesn’t help, you can try getting ahold of it with a pair of locking pliers and twist it out.

Strangely, the 1/4 worked just fine on my passenger side, but I *had* to use the 7mm to go proceed on the drivers side - the 1/4 felt like it was stripping the insides.

DIY With Michael Borders I’ve done some investigation lol and it seems like it’s leaking where my oil goes, like the I see the bolt to change my oil and if I follow the black tank to the front of my truck it’s attached to two wheels, one has my belt on it and one doesn’t but it spins also, it’s leaking behind that wheel that doesn’t have my belt on it. I hope that make since if not just let me know and I’ll figure out how to upload lol
