The balancer torque on these is extremely critical, it is a stretch bolt. The.engine is a great design and very durable. I have a feeling this is sabotage.

@@voodoodiecast I agree. I would LOVE to see a ZR1 on this channel. Or even a fully optioned out Redeye Widebody. The Demon 170 is simply too much of a one trick pony.

Looking at the photos. Balancer doesn’t looked like it has a key way slot. Looks like it’s spinning on the crank and walking up/ rubbing on front cover. The cranks are seizing up and breaking balancer. That’s just from the photos.
@pro5.019Күн бұрын
None of the Hellcat engines had a keyway. The balancer has a press fit. There isn't any metal transfer on the snout of the crank that would indicate it spun. I think the bolts that hold the balancer together are coming loose and driving into the timing cover. The question is, did they come loose from harmonics, or were they left loose during assemble. If Red Loctite was applied to those bolts, the problem would be solved.
@bullittboost6046Күн бұрын
@ Very Possible. Personally when I build high horsepower and Supercharged, I prefer a keyed or double keyed balancer. Just my choice.
@pro5.019Күн бұрын
@@bullittboost6046 Agreed that the crank snout should have a keyway. I believe Dodge's theory is that it weakens the crank snout. With almost 22 psi of boost that is asking a lot from a press fit, especially when it takes upwards of 125 hp to turn that supercharger.
@judgehastheword9069Күн бұрын
I have built motors and drag raced for 10 years. i am not talking building 300 hp to 500 hp I am talking I built 1000 hp to 2000 hp motor blown injection motors. I never had a motor blow up. I believe it is the builders that cause the motors not holding up. And bad design of the motor. And I believe it is owners fault. Owners are driving these cars like they are full out race car and there not. One thing that hurt the motors are the cars weigh to much. That motor trying to perform like a 100% race car and with the weight of these cars is putting to much stress on parts and they can't hold up to it. You can believe me are not I don't care. This is just how I feel what is causing them not holding up. I wonder how many owners have changed the upper pulley on the superchargers to a smaller on to make more boost that will put a lot of stress on the harmonic balancer . I bet is they are doing that they put the stock one back on before they take it back to the dealer.

Good points there. It’s safe to say the demon149 is a lemon. Poorly built, not well engineered but motards still think it’s an “engineering marvel” lol
@perryalexander5868Күн бұрын
That's why I'll build myself a Demon 170 using direct connection parts... it's a design flaw in the Demon 170 engine problems. Rush productions, poor quality control is a recipe for disaster.
@jgmullins1Күн бұрын
Absolutely no clue how these cars are still bringing 20-30K over MSRP on the auction sites. I get it that some of the owners that drive them (how many are actually driven - very few it seems) have no problems. Good for them. It's obviously a significant percentage that are failing. Why would someone pay this much just to roll the dice on a car that tops out at 149 MPH. Don't get it. Much rather have a 2018 Demon, Redeye, Z06, Blackwing, or GT 500. The 170 is a one dimensional car and it seems to have a high failure rate just doing that one thing. And to add inslult to injury, Dodge will likely be gone within 2 years - possibly sooner. If not for Butter nobody would have ever mentioned an issue with this car. Keep up the good work.

Maybe I missed it during this video. But did this demon 170 engine failure happen during drag racing on a drag strip or just happened during a normal Drive?
@covingtonpaul94Күн бұрын
I think people aren’t allowing these engines to break in.
@user-tu1ee6dc5fКүн бұрын
Could be part of the problem.
@ex.spaceshuttle.worker22 сағат бұрын
If anyone has followed Racer X he has a demon 170 and he said he was very careful to broke it in properly. And his engine failed after a few times at the drag strip. So it may or may not have anything to do with not properly breaking in the engine. More data needs to be compiled
@voodoodiecast3 сағат бұрын
The car is just not well engineered. MoparX has done the break in on his lemon149 but the engine failed. Now on his 2nd engine he still hasn’t done racing because the car or motor isn’t doing it’s thing.

I wonder if it’s a keyed crank for the balancer and not keyless Even if it was over torqued it wouldn’t do that Could also me bad bearing and seals or just cheap parts as they have been using To make that much power you need good quality parts

GM, FORD , DODGE their all having problems with their new engines. I'll stick with my old guns. They use a device called a pully pusher which is hydraulic/pneumatic pistol gun that attaches to the pully and has a small computer on it now. If that pully pusher isn't working properly , leaking oil, software problem etc... it will fail. I worked for a company that built them and they ALWAYS had problems with them and still do to this day. Those pully pushers are a pain in the @$$.
