Remember the Hot Wheels toy? The guy who's turbo Rampages were featured in High Performance Mopar and Hemmings, found the original Rampage concept, which was designed by Gaffoglio Family Metalcrafters of Fountain Valley, CA. Apparently, Chrysler's original prototype for the Rampage had a roofline that resembled the VW Rabbit pickup, rather than the distinctive slanted B pillar we all know and love. Upon viewing Chrysler's design, Ruben Gaffoglio and Tony Carlini thought they could do better and created their own prototype, which they presented to Chrysler execs. The execs loved the more fluid design and the rest is history. Carlini went on to create the Shelby Street Fighter, which was actually his personal car. When Carroll saw it, he flipped and immediately chistened it the "Street Fighter", slapped his name on it, and told Car Exchange magazine that it would be his first project for Chrysler.

Hi! I owned 3 1984 Direct Connection Rampages. The 1984 was a real limited edition of 300, but only a little over 200 were made to the lack of demand. They did have some drive trail upgrades, too. It was a little more than an exterior change. Very, very rare trucks, easily beating any Mustang, and looked super sporty.

I still have a 82 rampage , stored in my garage , with a little over 100 thousand miles .. it was last driven in 1998 , never driven in the winner , no rust ... the main problem I had with it, was if you put to heavy a load in the bed , you would loose steering control and traction ... other than that I LOVE it and one day hope to put it back on the road ...

Owned a 1984 Rampage a few years ago. Miss that thing every day. Wish I had gotten my raise, beforehand, because it needed a lot of repair to be street legal. Shame I couldn't hang onto it. Still, got a few months out of it on temp. Hauled ass, and a recliner, all while the streets were slippery. My pops called it the "Clown Truck" since I'm pretty tall. You'd never expect my big ass to climb in/out of one so easily 😅 I dream of the day that I may find another. My horde of turbo dodge pieces would be amazing to swap in.

Tbh the concept of such a vehicle is very honest; it's just a car-based pick up with a large bed, for those who don't need to go off road, don't need something large and heavy and also don't want to spend a fortune just to fill up the tank! Such light trucks were really successful in Europe in the 70s/80s/90s/00s and the Fiat Fiorino (1st gen was based on the Fiat Uno), Opel Combo (always based on the Opel Corsa and out of production for almost a decade) and VW Caddy (yup, that's what it was called and it was based on the VW Polo - it's not produced anymore) were the best sellers! And the best thing was that these models were also available in "box truck" versions (the Opel Combo was only in a "box-truck" form, actually) with twin outward-swinging rear doors! Only the Fiat Fiorino is being produced nowadays, in box form, both in Cargo and Passenger versions (the latter being called the Fiorino Qubo), with or without sliding side doors! And that's a shame, really! But then again, the car is a result of a collaboration between Fiat and PSA Groupe in 2008 and it's also available under the Citroen Nemo and Peugeot Bipper nameplates, so the choices are somewhat expanded! P.S.1: The Subaru Brat was also sold in Europe, but it's much much rarer! P.S.2: The Shelby Rampage looks ace and I am sure it was a blast to drive back in the day, even if it didn't have a V8!!

These based car pickups still VERY alive here in South America. The Fiat Strada was the successor of the Fiat Fiorino Pickup, also we have the Chevrolet Montana which his new generation was launched now in 2023, the Volkswagen Saveiro, and we have bigger models (but they aren't midsize trucks like a Chevy Colorado), they are a step before midsize trucks, these trucks are Renault Oroch, Fiat Toro (The new RAM Rampage will be based on Toro/Compass platform) and the Ford Maverick.

The Rampage was true factory sleeper that simply was far ahead of it's time. I still own and drive my 1984 Champagne Gold 5-Speed 2.2 Rampage. It has been to Europe twice (I was in the Army) and always turned heads there. The one thing I wish I had done was order the Mopar's Direct/Connection supercharger through catalog in 1990 as a bolt on for the normally asperated 2.2 engine. But as you stated the little truck slaloms through hair-pins like it's on rails. It's not the fastest thing off the line, but once at speed hold onto your hat carving up the corners. As to it load carrying, it will easily haul 1500 pounds as I have done many a time with ease. Just don't go beyond that, our the front end will feel like it floating.

In between blowing head gaskets (4 times in 7 years at 28 to 30 psi boost) it would run low 12 seconds times with very bad tractionless 2.25 60 foot times. Best traction limited time was 12:17 @ 118 mph. It felt more powerful than any big hot rodded V8 I built from 30 to 85 mph including my stripped low 11 second 67 camaro with 560 horsepower 420 small block. Once it got traction it was like a sling shot. It weighs 2400 lbs. with me in it. Nothing out there could catch it from 30 to 85 mph. In a two year period I beat over a million dollars worth of performance cars on the street,..(tuned and stock).

I absolutely love these little car/trucks, but they did have some issues. I have tried to find one for a long time and the biggest problem is finding one that is not rusted out in the quarters. Everyone I have seen has had some serious rust. The other thing I did not like was the steering wheel rake and the reach to the turn signal control stalk, granted that was a minour issue I could have lived with just to have one of these. While my 1983 Plymouth Scamp GT was nearly fully loaded, had 5 speed, alloy wheels + costly wide low-sidewall limited availability tires, factory FM AM Cassette with 4 speakers, was never adequate for south-central Alaska roads; since half the time snow and very colder temperatures were the standard fare for 6 months of winter. And because I really needed a small truck, preferably 4WD, tried to sell this rare Scamp GT to get something else. (I test drove 1983 Subaru Brat; several Isuzu Standard Cab 4x4 pickups; one gas, another diesel.) Later, the rarer model Scamp GT gained collectible status. By then, my GT had 188,000 miles on it, and most everything had been repaired or replaced at least once; Except for the big engine parts, and the 'Japanese CV joint -bearings. Its Carb was rebuilt 3x. Clutch and water pumps were factory weak. Never needed head-gasket. I did a lot of self-mechanic work on this; my other vehicles had been VW beetles, where oil change and major tuneups were routine. VW's from 1960 to 1973 SuperBeetle; in all kinds of bad and cold Alaska winters, with little or no heat, either. And old US trucks, '59 GMC, Chevy. And that Plymouth Scamp GT's front-wheel drive was quirky; only one wheel powered the vehicle forward, the opposite wheel powered reverse. This was not considered a defect by the Anchorage Chrysler company; and they attempted to get it back to resell (it was limited edition) as the Package is worth more & rarer than the standard Rampage. I sold it local in Seward AK. New owner wrecked it badly in two weeks!😵🙃

Great video man. Drinking my coffee and watching it was the highlight of my morning lol. Chrysler in the 80s wasn’t really that great. They lost their foothold in the muscle cars. They were renaming fwd cars charger/challenger. They made a lot of small mistakes but eventually in the 90s they figured it out with the merger with Mitsubishi. Made the viper. The dodge stealth. They were finally getting back into going fast. And once SRT came out. They were back better than ever. I also feel like this died because it couldn’t compete with an el Camino. That was a v8 rwd. This thing didn’t know what it was supposed to be. And light trucks like the ranger and Dakota and even Toyota. Definitely lead to the demise. I love it tho. Quirky as hell lol

I still own my 84 Rampage I bought new, It was a lot of fun to drive, I love how it handles in the turns, my Rampage has the prospector package, 2.2 4 cylinder with auto trans, ac, pb. ps, and cruise control. In 1999 at about 284,000 miles I took the 4 cylinder drivetrain out of it and shoehorned a 3.3 V6 drivetrain out of a wrecked Caravan that had about the same mileage as the rampage, I found an omni GLHS in a salvage yard and bought the 5 lug hubs with brakes, with the aluminum Wheels and bolted them on the Rampage. I really like driving it with the V6 with 4speed auto trans. And it gets better mileage than the 2.2 engine, if I keep it at 75 mph with cruise control it gets 50 mpg highway, and 38 mpg city. It has a lot of get up and go with the V6 in it. plus I can drive it at the speed limit or above going up steep mountain passes in Colorado and Utah. It feels like a V8 on acceleration. I have driven it 475,000 miles now, and hope to get another 500,000 miles plus out of it, it is a lot of fun driving it in road rallies in the 120 mile per hour bracket, especially on windy roads, and it does drift very well.

I had a new 1983 Rampage base model, red on red it was my first new car and I enjoyed it immensely! My first car was a used 1973 Charger it only got about 10 miles per gallon. The Rampage was so much better I drove the wheels off it. That one had 3 factory options, a 5 speed manual, right side mirror and silver bed rails. Not even a radio so I had the dealer install an AM/FM cassette. I really miss interiors with color this one was very red, carpet, seats, dash, steering wheel and headliner. Wish I still had it.

I just bought an 84’ rampage. Very clean for its age and runs and drives really well.

Plenty of competition for it at the time. Today, only the new maverick and hyundai are trying the unibody light truck formula and they are still bigger, more powerful. And while adjusted for inflation made them near the price of a maverick, that doesn't mean it would cost that much to make a similar vehicle today. If a 200hp, hybrid, 4d truck can cost 20k, then a lighter, smaller, less powerful and less capable car based truck could cost less.

I had an 82 4spd with the sport package include bed cover with a ducktail spoiler. I was totally happy with it and drove it to 180k miles before getting a hairline head crack. I had the engine rebuilt then sold it.

I like these videos you put up! If you have the opportunity, could you do a history/major flaws/cancellation video about the Chrysler R Platform cars? (New Yorker, Newport, St Regis, Gran Fury)

I have a Rampage. If Chrysler had waited and used the minivan platform with a v6 it could have have greater utility. The Ford Ranger and Chevy S10 were in a price war at the time.

I own an 84 Rampage, I shoehorned a minivan 3.3 liter V6 with the 4speed automatic trans in it. it felt like a V8 high performance car, and was very fun to drive with the V6.
@timothykeith13674 жыл бұрын
@@vivianwells496 I'll bet the V6 Rampage was quick ! If Chrysler had waited and used the minivan platform the Rampage might have been more popular , especially when the V6 became available. I'd read that Chrysler had built a minivan prototype based on the L body and that the chassis updates were used instead for the Rampage mini pickup. Marketing insiders said that the L body minivan was too small. They should have known that it was also too small for a mini truck but they were already planning for the Dakota truck. A Rampage based on the stretched minivan would be more useful. Too bad they eventually gave up on the Dakota too.

@@timothykeith1367 It is very fast, and if I keep the speed under 75 mph, it would get 50 mpg highway mileage. Never thought the V6 would get better mileage than the 4 cylinder, however it does.

I had an 84 rampage in 1987 to 89. The manual transmission was jerky and the metal was very thin. Good gas mileage about 33 mpg. Cheaply made

In 1983 the Canadian market had a limited edition called a Direct Connection Rampage. Not to be confused with the California 1984 Direct Connection (Shelby'eske) Rampages.

Oh, oh, oh, I had two Scamps, a silver 5-speed I bought new and a red automatic that I bought used, so in round numbers, I almost captured 0.1% of the Scamp production. I had the silver one for 17 years and the red one for about 9 years. Some random thoughts: I'm pretty sure the Scamp emblem was literally the old Plymouth (Valiant) Scamp emblem from the '70s (remember, Chrysler wasn't in great financial shape in that period). They brought out the Rampage in '82, expanded the line by introducing the Scamp in '83, then for '84 Chrysler decided Dodge would be the truck division, so no trucks for Plymouth and that's why the Scamp was a one-year-wonder. The bed was small, but deep, which was nice. The package shelf behind the seats was nice too. I always though it would have been cool to drop a GLH motor in it as the Rampage / Scamp was the lightest of the Omni / Horizon family. It was a fun car, I had a lot of happy miles with it. Nowadays I have two Cruisers, a silver 5-speed I bought new and a red automatic that I bought used... I enjoyed the video. There's no car like a Mopar!

I had a turbo converted 1983 Rampage. I traded it off for a Shadow CSX-T. I wish I still had the Rampage. I would love to do a 5 lug conversion and a Shelby conversion on one. They look great done up like a Shelby Charger.
