Fun fact about the battery location, in a minor front end collision the battery box is pushed back just far enough for the front tire to rub hole in the battery

I’m glad you mentioned the 2.4 liter turbo made in Mexico. My dad bought a new Cirrus with that engine back in 97, which was later passed on to me a few years later. That car was a blast to drive. If you pressed the accelerator to the floor at a standstill it did have a ton of turbo lag to the point that you thought something was wrong with the car until finally and very suddenly it would fly off. Thinking about that car brings back very fond memories, thanks for the video!

We had an 06 Stratus with the 2.7. While driving on a 150 mile road trip, the check engine light came on and it started running shitty. I shut it down for 10 minutes and it ran fine afterwards. The next morning about 3 qts of oil was underneath it. The mechanic said the cam was floating causing the leak. We had it repaired and was not given a warranty because it was going to happen again which it did 3 weeks later. We had it towed to a ford dealer and traded it in on an 08 Fusion. We still have the Fusion and had no problems with it and that's been 13 years. Yes the stratus was junk.

I always thought these were nice-looking cars for the segment, and were competitively equipped and priced. I was never under any illusion that they matched, say, a Honda Accord in quality, though. Still, a very defensible choice for a new car in its day. It will depreciate faster than its Japanese comp, but it also cost a good bit less up front.

My wife had a 2004 Stratus R/T sedan when we first met, and I ended up putting many miles on it myself. I found it to be a good looking car, but it seemed to always have problems as it aged. I recall that oil consumption was terrible once it got over 100K, however the 2.7L still managed to rack up about 250K after she passed the car to her brother. He maintains it still ran okay, but ended up scrapping it once it had too many issues and was mechanically totaled. I also remember attempting to replace the headlight bulbs, only to have to pay the dealer to do it because of the headlamp design - I believe they had to remove the bumper just to access the headlights! Lastly, the upgraded R/T wheels ended up warping over time and made this car a death trap in the winter. Even with decent tires, the rear end would fishtail on every icy patch because of how warped those wheels became. A/C stopped working just before 100K as well. Great video!

Owned a 98 4 door, which while a good looking car, best of the bunch IMHO, was mechanically garbage. The 2.4L threw a rod out of the side of the block at 81K miles, I had never seen that in a modern engine, mostly in 60's straight sixes. Replaced the engine and sent it on its merry way to be someone else's problem. Much harder to replace the engine than the longitudinal LH platform cars. Same with the transmission, changed one in the 2.5L Sebring I owned, what a PItA, comparatively doing the LH transmission was infinitely easier.

Thanks for the video. I'm the original owner of a 2002 Stratus R/T with currently 306K+ miles. The original engine was destroyed by my mechanic around the 60K mile mark and replaced with another engine that had roughly 40K miles (yes, for free). The transmission was refurbished around the 240K mark and at the 265K mark, the 2nd engine had one cylinder fail (2015). So, I had a choice, spend the money on someone's problems or replace the engine? There was nothing wrong with my Status with a few exceptions cosmetically with the interior door panel. (Horribly designed door panels) I took my cash and dropped a Jasper Motor in and it's been flawless. I truly think I could get to 450K miles if maintained. The comment in the video is critical about maintenance. Yes, I changed the oil every 3K miles. The great thing about this car today is that I can find almost any part for it at the local junkyard. My buddy wants to buy it from me for his daughter about to turn 16. I'm letting him know, I'll buy it back if she doesn't destroy it and changes the oil every 3K miles. I think this car gets a bad rap saying the engines are a disaster. You get what you give. Change the oil ofter and follow the schedule of maintenance schedule in the owner's manual and it will be fine. Thanks again for the video.

You hit this entire video spot on! I had a 2004 SXT with the 2.4 SOHC as the first car I've ever bought brand new and did a lot of highway driving with it immediately the day after I bought it. (I'm from New Orleans, and that was my "Hurricane Katrina" car, so I did a lot of in and out highway driving as well.) The power of that liter engine was adequate enough for me, even being sort of "heavy-footed". The only major issues I had with it is I had to get the transmission rebuilt after about 100,000 miles, and it overheated on the highway at 200,000 miles, blowing the head gasket. Otherwise, it was a good car for me. I even popped the timing belt twice with it, but that engine was non-interference, so after a new belt it was good as new.

Im from Barcelona, Spain, and my aunty had a white 2.4 1998 Chrysler Stratus. It was reliable until it started burning and leaking oil in 2011. Most non car people told my aunty "nice Mercedes" "nice Jaguar"... few people knew what it was. Her Chrysler had the same exterior as the Dodge with the same grill and all but with Chrysler emblems. It was a cool car.

I had a '96 Stratus Sedan with the 2.4. Passengers complimented its smooth, quiet ride, and I loved the way it handled in the snow and ice. Kept it for 9 years, 150 K miles, and sold it to a friend's son who drove it for another five or so years. Still ran, but he wanted a new car and sold it to a friend of his. 👍

I found your video quite interesting since I purchased an old 2001 SE Stratus about 6 months ago, in Mexico it's still pretty common since it's cheap to get one around 1500 dollars, it has around 15000 miles, my question is what would you recommend to check to keep it working? I notice like a month ago that is leaking underneath the passenger seat and some coolant is leaking too in the front right corner, what advice could you give me to ensure it runs well for at least a year more?

I used to own a 2003 Stratus r/t sedan with the 2.7 v6. It had a manual transmission and was fun to drive around since I was in my early 20s. Sadly, the head gasket blew around 150k. My father gave to to a friend's kid and he turned it into a Gambler for offroading. Fast forward a decade later (July 2023) and I stumbled across another Stratus being sold in a police auction. It was a 2004 coupe with the 3.0 v6 automatic with the power shift option. I found out it was a cpe model that the cops used for undercover stuff. I bought it for $640 (after fees) sight unseen. I was absolutely thrilled when I turned the ignition on and saw the odometer with 63,738 miles on it. Performance wise, the car needed a new exhaust which was about $700. I also repainted the car since it sat out in the sun most of its life. I should also mention that it's virtually rust free which is extremely weird since it lived in PA it's entire life. I've put about two thousand miles on the car and really enjoy driving it. The R/T coupe is getting extremely rare to find any more, let alone one with low milage and no rust. 🙂

The Stratus and the Sebring were a mixed bag. I think people exaggerate how problematic they actually are. I've seen people driving well taken care of ones that have been good cars to them and others have been pretty bad. Some owners have said that over maintenance is key. I say that even the crappiest cars out there can be decent if you take care of them and do the work when it's supposed to be done! I think these cars were better than the 2015 Chrysler 200. I owned one of those and it had a bunch of transmission related issues, mostly electronic but those cars gained a bad reputation very quickly.

I own a 2014 Chevrolet Spark, and I would like to own a 2006 Dodge Stratus sedan as a second car for me. However, I don’t want to have to deal with engine problems, and I want a Stratus that is in strong condition with a good engine before getting one, but many cars have problems with certain things. I could consider a Chrysler Sebring or a Nissan Altima. My 2014 Spark has transmission and cooling system problems. Sometimes, it has problems with the screen. I want the Stratus or Sebring, but I may not get one. Other than that, I’m definitely getting a Nissan Altima someday.

My mom had one a 2000 SE with the 2.4 it was a salvage title car (it had minor flood damage but it was freshwater and it only got a little over the door line which got the carpet wet, the seller replaced the carpet and all 4 wheel bearings there was zero signs that it had said flood damage the whole underside of the car was clean and corrosion free til it was sold in 2008). shortly after she bought it our grandmother moved in with us for a while and she had trouble getting in the car (it was pretty low to the ground lol). so I bought it off her and she got a bigger car (an 01 Impala which grandma loved). I LOVED this car that little 2.4 had more than enough OOMPH get me where I had to go, never hesitated, it went up hills with ease my last car (94 Thunderbird with a 3.8 V6 with 140hp) struggled to get up a hill unless I had a running start. car was great on gas, had ICE COLD AC to date the best AC I ever had in any car past or present. Took the car to Florida from NY 4 times never gave me any issue. the only things mechanically I EVER had was the right rear brake hose that connected to the rear drum brake clogged and caused the brake to not release when the pedal was released (had to replace it, the drum and the pads) and a water pump (did not circulate properly causing slight overheat), other than that ZERO issues. And yes the battery in the fender is retarded, I had a minor fender bender in 06 and the battery was damaged they put a new one in but did not tighten the terminal bolts, I tell you jacking up that car in January to get that wheel off and fender liner (thankfully just part of it not the WHOLE liner) to tighten those bolts are NOT fun. when I was looking for a new car 2 years ago to replace one that was totaled I was actually looking into a 3rd gen cars but could not find one that was in my price range, so I got a low mileage '09 Impala.

We initially leased a new '95 Dodge Stratus ES V6 in silverfern (kind of a greyish with a green and beige tint). When the lease was up, we bought a new '97 ES V6 with the new AutoStick transmission. As a leadfooted teenager, I hooned the living daylights out of it and was, at the time at least, impressed with its decent (for the day) factory stereo which featured punchy 6x9s in the rear, the snappy torque of the Mitsubishi-supplied 2.5L 24-valve V6, and the remarkably predictible handling prowess of the double-wishbone suspension and available grip of the factory 15" alloys shod with Michelin MXV4s. When pushed, the car exhibited a laudable neutrality biased towards understeer of course, but the chassis was overall quite taut, again, for its day, given that it was marketed as a family sedan. The buzzy V6 would happily chirp the tires from a start and hustle the car through the midrange up to its electronically limited top speed of 124 mph (which I'm now embarrassed to say I achieved many, many times). It served as a faithful DD for my mom's daily freeway commute long after I bought my own car (a silver '90 300ZX 2+2 that I adored) and left for college, racking up nearly 250k on its original engine (though it required a new transmission at some point north of 200k) and still looked quite sharp despite its age in 2006 when my mom was hit pulling out of her work. The damage was fairly minor but due to its age and mileage was totalled by insurance and she moved on to a new '06 Volvo S40, which (to my knowledge) she still drives today. It was a wonderful car to own and drive, and one of my favorite examples of the domestic USA industry's resurgence in the mid-90s, for which I will always hold an irrational nostalgia.

I bought a 2005 SXT with a 2.7L V6 just about a month and a half ago. I love to drive it. It's got about 181,000 miles on it and is giving me about 23.1 MPG. A guy had hit something with it and damaged the hood, the bumper cover, and one of the headlights. I bought it for $600 with a new battery and nearly new tires and have replaced all the damaged parts except the light (fixed it with Mexican epoxy Kola Loka). I repainted the parts (with spray cans, but good enough) to match the rest of the car and replaced the oil pressure switch and the coolant outlet on the top of the engine. I also changed the oil and filter and the air filter idle air control valve. And I got an extra rim and tire that looks new for $40 while at Pull-a-Part. Currently, including the purchase price, parts, title, tag, and paint, I probably have $1100 or, maximum $1200, in it. The AC condenser was bowed in, but I straightened it (no leaks). My wife loves to drive it, too. Wish I had 3000 bucks lying around. I know where there's another one just like it without any damage. I'd like to buy it for her, so she'd leave mine alone and let ME drive it! This may be the best car deal I've ever made! What can I say? God put me in the right place at the right time. Thank you, Jesus! We're having fun!

I had a 2004 Dodge Stratus SE with the 2.7 V6 engine. Bought it from Carmax back in 2004 with only 6K miles on it. This damn car gave me sooooooo many problems. The engine would cut off while idling. No Chrysler/Dodge service dept could determine what the issue was. It turned out that it was the powertrain control module and luckily there was a recall and it was fixed for free. For some reason my Stratus would just eat through front rotors and those rotors would warp quickly. By the time I reached 99K, it would start breaking down while driving due to cylinder misfires. Traded that POS car in. Worst car ever.
