I was able to get the connectors on my 2005 Dodge Sprinter off with just needle nose pliers. Might not work for everyone, but I was just real careful that I had it over the tabs, squeezed lightly, then pulled straight up and they came off no issue. Thanks for the helpful video!

How would you replace the glow plug connector? The plastic piece on my 5th cylinder has snapped but it seems the glow plug is still intact and functional, but the bushing or connector that has the wire attached to it has broken. Any ideas or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
@AutomotiveEZ
@AutomotiveEZ 5 жыл бұрын
Hey - most German car makers do NOT sell wiring "pigtail connectors" for repairs - but US Automakers do. Especially GM. Anyway, the German Auto Makers want to sell an entire harness. 9015403107 is part # for entire sprinter harness. It's over $500. I suggest finding a good mechanic in your area that does electrical - like me. He can fix harness. An improvised terminal end(s) spliced in will work. On other hand - if your existing wiring is OK - Just insulate it. Elec. Tape or a rubber insulator. Because it sounds like just the plastic part broke off.

Does software for the 2006 2500 Sprinter identify which glow plug is at fault (1 of 5) for poof performance after initial starting for those 20-30 seconds that heat the chamber fuel and lowers emissions and lets motor run more smoothly?
@AutomotiveEZ
@AutomotiveEZ 7 жыл бұрын
Most scan tools will communicate with most vehicles but only give basic info when compared to a factory level tool. Glow plugs often DO SET CODES. If so, YES it shows the problem cylinder # or #'s. However, wiring and other items are supposed to be checked as well.

Sometimes - if the plug does break off - it can be extracted w/ head on engine. Sometimes head has to be removed. I do not recommend driving w/ a bad glow plug - although it is possible to do so

Nice video thank you. Just a couple questions; At 1:52 "retighten it bring it down a little" on the wrench don't you have to switch the lever on the wrench to retighten it? Maybe using a torque wrench would be better for some of us?

Yes you have to switch the wrench direction - I was simply illustrating and explaining. Torque wrench only needed to tighten not loosen

Hey great video I have 2005 sprinter and my check engine light has been coming on and off and did get it checked and code said faulty glow plug . my truck starts fine but when engine is cold going from 0 to 40 the engine chugs like crazy but once I hit the highway it's fine and once it's warmed up its totally fine . would the glow plugs be causing this ?
@nautamaran
@nautamaran 7 жыл бұрын
Yes. You've likely got some smoke too? Glow plug initiates ignition in the cold cylinder during start and warmup, so a faulty plug results in a loss of power and unburned fuel dumping into the exhaust (where it mixes with hot exhaust from other cylinders and partially burns). Swapping in a new set of glow plugs will improve cold weather starts and warmup performance.

I changed a leaking #2 cylinder fuel injector copper seat washer on my '06 2500 5 cylinder. Upon restart it was quiet and smooth running. I let it warm up for 8 minutes and started to drive away and there was a sizeable amount fuel coming from a 10MM dia. black rubber hose on the drivers side coming from somewhere under the intake manifold? could not find the source. Removed the black plastic cover over the fuel injectors and that area was dry and saw no leaks. What do you think the problem is? Thanks
@AutomotiveEZ
@AutomotiveEZ 4 жыл бұрын
Sorry, for late reply, I just noticed this post now as you had posted it so long ago.. But common "mystery leaks" on Diesel Engines are from broken or damaged return lines or broken or damaged mechanical fuel pressure regulators. Sometimes injectors leak internally back into return line as well.

A broken glow plug? If that is what you mean you should have a professional mechanic look at the situation for you. It is not something I can do unless I was there in person. Worse case scenario is cylinder head removal but there are other things you can try first. Again… find a solid diesel tech if you broke a glow plug

Don't know if anyone on here would know the answer to this, but on my 06 I'm getting P0675-P0671 codes. Says it's an open in all of glow plug circuits. Not sure if this would be an issue with the actual glow plugs or if the issue is elsewhere. Thanks for any help in advance.
@AutomotiveEZ
@AutomotiveEZ 3 жыл бұрын
Joel - a lot of times that is a break (an open) in the glow plug wiring harness or even the control module itself. Check all wiring and connectors if possible. Most glow plug harnesses are replaceable with a factory harness. It’s usually a sub harness under hood so it can be plug and play. But not always

Great video I was given an estimate over the phone for a $1200 service charge for replacing the glow plugs at an authorized Dodge Sprinter van dealer. Now I know better not to go to the dealer but can I rely on an independent garage to work with a MB engine or would I need to go to a foreign vehicle specialist since I am all thumbs when it comes to mechanics? I also would have been charged $25 for this information. So I value your expertise
@skysteppes
@skysteppes 7 жыл бұрын
Raymond Ebbeler do it yourself, mechanics don't care about your vehicle and might break the glow plug and then they will charge 2 grand to pull head and replace . you care and so you will do a good job. I hired a Sprinter "specialist" but he broke my glow plug because he was in a hurry . that was two years ago and I have been driving around with no glow plugs ever since.

@EmileVoyer
@EmileVoyer 9 жыл бұрын
Matt Wolynetz There's 5 glow plugs (5 cylinders on these 2.7L) You can buy them all for around 100$, take the Bosch, no chinese shit on eBay. The special tool (glow plug pliers) cost about 140$ at any Mercedes dealer (special tool #9286) and they will ask you 1000$ or even more because of the risk to break the head and get the glow plug stock in the cylinder ... Big job to get them out a this point ... :P Be careful if you do it yourself !!

memo111115 Thanks for this....my good friend and mechanic for 30 plus years is advising me on my Sprinter now...I have dumped the local Mercedes dealer as I believe they are dishonest. My guy says my glow plugs are good via his computer tester and that I need to change out the glow plug module, part #904-304 made by Dorman, how difficult is it to change this module out? What's involved? Could this module be bad and the glow plugs good? And since my Sprinter is a 2006 with 190,000 miles on it, should I be changing out the glow plugs anyway? I am really concerned about them breaking off and did have difficulty starting my van on cold days this past winter. Thanks for your help.
@AutomotiveEZ

+Matt Wolynetz 5 plugs all together.. If the glow plugs cooperate - go for it. Follow this video closely. If any feel super tight or start to feel "twisty" under your socket - seek out a local diesel expert with Benz experience
@AutomotiveEZ
@AutomotiveEZ 8 жыл бұрын
+Urban Hunter TV Delaware Not hard the module is located right under the hood on one of the air intake tubes and bolts in and out - plus the wire connectors as well. You should have a scanner handy to clear all the old codes out of PCM after install. These modules are not horrible for reliability but they fail nonetheless. I suggest all brand new glow plugs first as a shorted one can "fry" the module.

Thank you so much for making this video! I'm working to remove cylinder 3. After reading a few forums, I decided to put some PB blaster around the 'well' of the plug before trying to pull it out and letting it soak for a few days. One of my friends called me freaking out suggesting that if any amount of PB blaster gets into the engine it could really mess up my van. Is this true? You seem to spray the stuff into the hole once the plug has cracked loose. I'm trying to save myself a few hundred dollars and not destroy my engine! Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

@AutomotiveEZ
@AutomotiveEZ 4 жыл бұрын
Kaya Lindsay - Hey again. Yes just a small “dab” of either silver or copper anti-seize is fine. Just a small qtip size dab on one side of threads will work. No need to cover the threads by hand. Too much is not a good thing but a smidge never causes issues and helps prevent a seized up plug down the road

Would love to send you a PM but I think you didn't authorize em or can't find it. Send me one and I will reply of course. Anyway. Can you answer this quickly please. I tried a 2007 sprinter today. A little beat up on the outside. about 250,000 miles. I have never driven a sprinter before, so i am not sure, but I think the turbo didn't work or kick in. when I floored it, there was no rise in rpm or any sort of difference in power and this, at any speed. is that normal? it had good power I could feel from take off, but after the 3rd or 4th gear it was really shitty. Its an automatic tranny BTW. I was able to bring it up to 65 or 70 mph, over the course of a fairly normal distance I think. but not super quick. I would expect to have a really hard time going up hills, or have to drop it in 4th gear to do so. I also set the cruise control, and the rpm meter would jump slightly every 2 or 3 seconds, from 2000rpm to 2200 rpm and back down again, back and forth back and forth. I have no way to gauge if this is normal or not. It starts amazing and he's only asking 5000 CAD for it which I think is a steel, but I could be wrong.The EPS warning light came on too and 2 glow plugs are to be changed. Otherwise, its reality great. Your quick opinion on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
